One of the ways that a CAN BUS system can affect the operation of an aftermarket HID conversion kit is this: First, the CAN BUS system will detect that whatever is plugged into the original wiring is probably a bad light bulb, it will start pulsating the electricity again and again in order to try to get the light bulb to start up. If it was indeed a broken factory light bulb, this would have no consequence because the electricity wouldn’t go anywhere, due to the broken filament. With an HID system, this rapid-fire electricity will cause the ballast to turn on and off like a strobe.

But what is a D Series bulb? They come in D1, D2, D3, and D4 variants. The new ones are produced without any mercury in them, making them more environmentally friendly. In terms of installing LED bulbs, there are D1, D2, D3, and D4 bulbs that will work with the associating HID. The question is, are LED bulbs brighter than HID?

If your vehicle uses a CANBUS data system to control or monitor the lighting, you might need a CANBUS style HID ballast in order for it to work properly.Inside the glass housing, you’ll notice the filament wire. This wire is the tungsten filament wire that creates the light. This is your basic halogen bulb.With HID, you will notice that it is, indeed, replaceable. You pull off the dust cover, and inside you’ll see your HID bulb. It’s kind of tough to pull out, but with some work, it can come out. Typically, they are held in with retaining springs.

The final option here to check is to pull the bulb out of the housing itself and inspect it. This bulb shown here is a halogen bulb. There’s nothing too fancy going on with it. You can pull it out and look.If you turn on your headlights and it flashes for a second, then over time (about seven to 10 seconds peak performance and tends to be white in color), that tends to be HID. If you turn on your headlights and it’s instantaneous on power and a nice white light, this tends to be factory LED.

With the LED option (left headlight in the first image), you’ll notice the LED module itself, a lot more complex, with a lot more going on inside the headlight.
