In addition to hormones, as our nerve endings are simulated, the capillaries dilate, widening the vessels allowing more blood to flow. This does a number of things. Firstly, it accelerates an exchange at the cellular level within the skin, which is helpful for skin elasticity and nourishment. If you are participating in a massage where oils are used, exfoliation and the removal of dead skin will take place too, which is also beneficial for the skin. Finally, the manipulation, through squeezing, pressing and massage movements also causes deeper glands called the sebaceous glands to be stimulated (the effects of which are generally appreciated after a scalp massage). The stimulation of these glands is beneficial for the hair follicles, dry scalp and can lead to healthier scalp and hair.

How does massage affect the nervous system?
Massage stimulates receptors that transmit sensory signals to the central nervous system, and this in turn causes the reduction in tension in muscles and the feeling of relaxation. Massage causes the release of endorphins which has been shown to reduce pain and muscle tension.
Our mission is to work diligently so you can relax. Sense is committed to delivering top-quality service, prioritising the well-being of your most valuable asset – your employees.

One of the main benefits of massage includes the removal of waste from the large intestine. Just as blood can be pushed around the veins and lymph fluid can be guided around the body, when massage is applied along the course of the intestines this can assist in the removal of waste.
Who first identified the basic hand strokes used in Swedish massage?
However, the actual inventor of Swedish Massage is Johann Georg Mezger, a Dutch physician who was noted for studying French massage techniques and their effects on physical healing. It was Mezger, not Ling, who codified the five massage techniques that form the foundation for Swedish Massage.
Massage aids the flow of lymph as the lymph system only relies on the bodies own movement to transport lymph around the body. Trained massage therapists will gently assist the transportation of lymph fluid which can assist in the removal of accumulated toxins and help improve your immune response. When a person is stressed the body increases many hormones, such as cortisol and vasopressin. Because massage has a calming effect on the autonomic nervous system, this has been found to help regulate this hormone imbalance and thus reduce stress. However, it is necessary to note that this very difficult to measure accurately due to the way that massage also effects our endorphins.

When massage is applied, the nerves and sensory receptors are stimulated and messages are sent along the nerve pathways via the spinal cord to the brain. The parasympathetic system then slows down body activity, such as reducing the heart rate, lowering blood pressure and decreasing the amount of sweat.
What are the 5 types of Swedish massage?
Swedish technique consists of five basic strokes: effleurage (stroking), petrissage (kneading), friction, tapotement (percussion) and vibration, though all of these strokes are not used on every part of the body.
Because of the effects massage has on our muscles, this in turn has a knock on effect with our bones. For instance, when muscular tension has been reduced, tension within the tendons are released and can help the skeletal frame to re-align. This can have a further beneficial effect on overall posture and mobility. As each of these different nerve cells are stimulated they send signals to the brain which release endorphins that help us feel happy and relaxed. For instance, one of these is dopamine which is known as our ‘reward hormone’, and is also released when we do something good or achieve something, such as winning a scratch card, finishing a deadline – or even getting 50 likes on our latest Facebook post!
Meanwhile, a relaxing back massage will have effects on the nervous system and in turn cause the breath to slow and encourage deep breathing, with the added potential for reducing blood pressure. One of the arguments for using massage as an effective remedy to stress is due to the fact that stress stimulates the sympathetic system which increases the heart rate, raises blood pressure and mobilise glucose. The idea is that you cannot stimulate both of these responses at the same time, or at the very least, that massage can reduce the effects of stress. It might be surprising, but the effects of massage span far and wide, from the beating of your heart and the pads of your fingertips, to your brain functioning and breathing. With so many incredible effects to comprehend, let’s first understand a little bit about the body – when therapists learn about this, they study The Anatomy and Physiology. If you’re interested in learning more about A&P here are some good courses you can take. Endorphins can give a feeling of euphoria and inhibit pain sensations, and massage often triggers a release of endorphins, however the level of this release varies from person to person. This means that each massage experience is unique to the individual, but usually can always have a powerful effect in improving our mood and decreasing stress levels, to whatever degree that may be.Sports massage therapists will apply deeper movements on athletes chest muscles. These muscles are called the intercostal muscles and are located in between the ribs. Deep stretching can reduce muscle strain and assist respiration in sporting activities by ensuring good range of motion and complete/proper expansion of the lungs.
The effect on the respiratory system will differ depending on the type of massage technique applied. Stimulating movements such as cupping, hacking, beating and pounding are all vigorous tapotement moves and are stimulating. This can be really beneficial for those with chest congestion, as these stimulating moves will help to loosen phlegm and open up the airways.
The lymphatic system is the system that contains lymph; this is fluid that transports white blood cells throughout the body (amongst other uses). White blood cells (also called leukocytes or leucocytes), are the cells of the immune system that are involved in protecting the body against both infectious disease and foreign invaders.Simply put, the nervous system deals with the rapid conduction of messages from one part of the body to another. It is made up of the central nervous system consisting of the brain, spinal cord and peripheral system of nerves and the autonomic nervous system which includes the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems. The autonomic nervous system controls all the body structures over which we have no voluntary control such as the internal organs.
Increase in circulation nourishes skeletal cells, particularly cells named osteoblasts that are responsible for making new bone as your body grows. Massage can also break down adhesions that can form between tendons and bone or ligaments and bone. This can be especially helpful after an injury when breaking down excessive scar tissue that can form which often limits proper functioning.
When massage is applied to the body it increases the blood supply travelling around your body, in particular to the area being treated. This in turn promotes an exchange of substances between the cells, which helps to bring fresh nutrients into cells and remove waste, keeping your body healthy and ready for action. The skin is an incredible organ (your body’s largest one in fact) which covers the entire outside of the body, and is filled with nerve endings, sensors, capillaries, glands, fat and connective tissue. The sensors in the skin register touch and send signals to the brain to aid in relaxation; one example of this would be a nerve cell called Meissner corpuscles, which are a type of nerve cell that is sensitive to light touch. This is to say that we have a number of different types of nerve cells within our skin, each one sensitive to a different level of touch.A bit of science here: It is important to note that the peristaltic action is the squeezing muscle motion that moves food down your throat, and through your intestines. When the peristaltic action moves to fast, matter moves through your bowels too quickly and can result in diarrhoea. Massage calms and discourages over stimulation of peristaltic action, and thus helps ease an irritated bowel. In the same way massage can also calm premenstrual tension or period cramps with some simple circular motions.
Massage can also be beneficial as a natural remedy to pain, or when muscles go into spasm or cramp. It’s very common for people to instinctively rub or massage an area when experiencing cramp or pain (think of a time where you might have experienced cramp, or banged your knee or elbow). When dealing with cramp, massage warms and brings blood flow into the area, as well as stretching and improving the range of motion, and massage reduces pain by reducing nerve compression.
The direction of massage is also important, and all trained massage therapists will always massage in the direction of the heart, and thus with the natural blood flow (this is called the ‘venous flow’), as well as assisting the blood flow throughout the body. This has a direct effect on the nervous system, causing a dilation in the blood vessels and often decreases blood pressure. So if you’re getting a bit stressed in that commute traffic, give yourself a shoulder rub! We guarantee it will help!Anatomy & physiology looks at the arrangement of the organs, as well as how the human body functions. In this article, we will look at each system and highlight some of the amazing effects that massage has on each of these organs and systems – we hope you find the biology of massage as fascinating as we do!
A typical full-body massage session lasts for 60 to 90 minutes, but many therapists will offer shorter sessions for treating specific areas such as the back, shoulders, neck or any area experiencing discomfort or pain. On the first visit, clients are asked a number of questions concerning their general well-being, injuries and pre-existing medical conditions n order to determine if there are any physical conditions that would prohibit or limit massage therapy.
Our therapists blend in various techniques, depending upon their personal training and experience, to address the specific needs of the client. In general, it is the manipulation of the body’s soft tissue (i.e. the skin, muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia) using the hands in a gentle, flowing technique. Varying degrees of pressure and stretching movements are incorporated. It is most commonly used for relaxation and improving well-being.Swedish massage is considered the foundation for most table massage techniques. It is characterized by the use of lotion or oil to allow gliding strokes over the skin. Most strokes are done toward the patient’s heart with the goal of improving blood and lymphatic circulation. Swedish technique consists of five basic strokes: effleurage (stroking), petrissage (kneading), friction, tapotement (percussion) and vibration, though all of these strokes are not used on every part of the body.
At Be Well Bodyworks, massage therapy is a highly personalized experience. Tailored to your individual needs, your massage will draw upon a variety of techniques and modalities to help you relax and to address any specific areas of concern.
Tapotement is a French word that means to tap or to drum. This technique consist of applying rhythmic tapping across patient’
s body. The tapping sensations are used to stimulate the flow of blood and endorphins in body. As such, tapotement is particularly useful for relaxing tight muscles and for draining lymphatic build up.The amount of pressure that is applied with each stroke varies upon the needs of the patient. Generally speaking, there are 3 general approaches to applying effleurage:After the muscles have been warmed up with the effleurage strokes, the next technique that follows is petrissage. Petrissage comes from the French word pétrir, which means “to knead.” The technique generally applied by manually compressing soft tissues of an area through rhythmic kneading, squeezing, and/or rolling. These movements are particularly useful for stretching and loosening tense muscles, which also aids in improving blood circulation and helps to detoxify the body. As the name suggest, the vibration technique is applied by rhythmically shaking an area of the body to loosen and relax the body. The intensity and pressure of the technique depend on the area of the body that is being treating, but it can performed in many ways, such as using both palms across a large area, such as the back or the fingers on small and sensitive area, such as the face. It is especially useful for soothing nerves and treating areas with lots of scar tissue. Swedish Massage begins with a set of stroking movements known as effleurage. Effleurage is a French word that means to lightly touch or to skim. This technique consists of a series of long, gliding or circular massage strokes that is applied using different degrees of pressure. In Swedish Massage, Friction refers to a firm and focused rubbing technique that is applied to a specific area, usually using just the fingers or thumbs. Compression is often applied in a circular rhythm (Circular Friction) or in perpendicular rhythm (Transverse Friction).Effleurage is applied to a patient’s body to loosen muscular knots and to release tension. It is performed at the beginning of a massage therapy session to warm-up the muscles and at the end of it, to soothe them out. In a previous article, we discussed the history and origins of Swedish Massage. In it, we explained that the name Swedish was misnomer that arose due to translation mix-ups. Per Henrik Ling, a Swedish medical pioneer and founder of the Swedish Gymnastics system, often gets credited with inventing the modality. However, the actual inventor of Swedish Massage is Johann Georg Mezger, a Dutch physician who was noted for studying French massage techniques and their effects on physical healing. What is Swedish massage therapy?
Swedish massage involves long, kneading strokes combined with rhythmic tapping strokes and movement of the joints. This type of massage targets the uppermost layer of muscles and aims to relieve muscle tension.
When an individual is suffering from discomfort and is in need of pain relief, it can be difficult to determine which service is right for him or her. This is especially true for most athletes that require the proper treatment and service so that they can perform to the best of their abilities and prevent further injuries. Physiotherapy and massage therapy share a lot of similarities, but there are also distinct differences. Learn more about the differences between these two services here. There are several types of massage therapy methods. Is massage good for the heart?
Massage Helps Reduce Blood Pressure, Heart Rate & Stress Regular massage can help heal the heart and prevent heart disease. In 2008, researchers studied 263 volunteers who underwent massage for 45 to 60 minutes. Average blood pressure fell by 10 mg Hg, and heart rate by 10 beats per minute—after just one treatment.
An oncology massage is used by people undergoing cancer treatments. An oncology massage therapist may use just one type of massage or combine various methods, including Swedish massage, deep tissue massage, and lymphatic massage during a treatment session. The primary goal of an oncology massage is to make the patient feel relaxed. Therefore, the therapist will often change massage techniques based on the needs of the patient. Oncology massages are considered a complementary treatment for cancer patients and the two main benefits of using massage therapy include:
This type of massage is specifically designed with athletes in mind. Athletes often need relief from pain caused by a repetitive motion associated with their chosen activity; this is why they will often seek treatment from a professional massage therapist that specializes in sports massage therapy. Just think of the number of times a tennis player swings his of her racquet – after a short while, that repetitive motion is going to take a toll on the player’s shoulder. An active individual or athlete may need a sports massage because this type of treatment can help:
With deep tissue massages, the therapist uses finger pressure and the stroking of deep layers to massage tissue areas where muscles are tight and knotted. Individuals often seek deep tissue massages because this method eases chronic aches and pain found in the neck, upper back, lower back, legs, and shoulders. Individuals may visit a massage therapist to get a deep tissue massage because it can:Swedish massages are the most common type of massage therapy in Canada. Using pressure and friction, the therapist is able to loosen tight muscles and make clients feel more relaxed. The primary goal of a Swedish massage is to relax the entire body. This is accomplished by using long strokes that return the blood to the heart. But, besides complete relaxation, Swedish massages are beneficial to an individual’s well-being because it has the ability to:
Lymphatic massage is also referred to as lymphatic drainage. The therapist will use slow and circular motions and pressure to move lymph fluid throughout the lymphatic system. It is most often used to decrease lymphedema, a condition in which swelling occurs when lymph fluid cannot flow normally, resulting in a build up of fluid. Individuals get a lymphatic massage because this type of therapy provides the following benefits:

It’s called therapy for a reason. Studies have shown that massage can increase blood flow, oxygen, nutrients and red blood cells; as well reduces your heart rate and lowers blood pressure. A therapeutic massage also helps increase endorphins which gives a healthy boost to your cardiovascular system. In addition to helping lower your risk of developing certain heart diseases, massages can improve circulation and stimulate the lymphatic system. This helps to flush out toxins and other waste materials from your system, allowing the cardiovascular system to work more efficiently. Massage not only relaxes muscles but can also help improve the function of the entire cardiovascular system, as well as boosting overall heart health and well-being.
Massage therapy involves the manipulation of the soft tissues of the body – muscle, connective tissue, tendons, ligaments, and skin — by a trained, qualified medical practitioner (massage therapist). Many people use Swedish massage just to relax. Massage therapy has also been shown to increase serotonin and dopamine, two hormones commonly associated with anxiety and pleasure and happiness, respectively. This can help reduce depression levels and improve your mood, which is excellent for those who suffer from major depressive disorder (MDD).
Massage therapy can provide a number of benefits for your mental and physical health, but it’s not suitable for everyone. Make sure you weigh the pros and cons before deciding if this is the proper treatment for you.

Massage therapy has been shown to improve sleep quality in adults. A study found that massage therapy was able to enhance the quality of sleep and duration for those who suffered from chronic pain, anxiety, and fatigue. It’s no secret that massage therapy is excellent for reducing stress levels. A study found that just a single session of massage was enough to reduce cortisol (a hormone that’s released when you’re stressed) and mood-related symptoms.Massage therapy increases blood circulation and breaks up any fluid build-ups in the muscles. As a result, it gives you more energy and stamina to tackle the day ahead. Studies show that massage therapy has been linked to an increase in the energy levels of cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy treatments. In fact, a majority of them reported feeling more energetic after their massages.
Massage therapy is used to improve the circulation of blood and lymphatic fluids. It eases tension in the tissues surrounding your muscles, which can help you feel relaxed and at ease. Increasing blood circulation also helps speed up recovery time for injuries through increased oxygenation of injured cells.

If you have insurance, it’s likely that at least a portion of your massage therapy costs will be covered, but if you don’t, it can be pretty costly.Though rare, there is a risk for minor injuries such as bruising or pulled muscles if you’re not careful. Tell your massage therapist if you’re pregnant, have any medical conditions, or take any medication before your session to avoid potential injuries.
Though it’s rare, some people find that massage therapy is too painful to bear. If you have a low pain tolerance or are dealing with chronic pain, make sure your therapist knows this beforehand so they can adjust their treatment accordingly.
Massage therapy isn’t meant to be the cure-all for all of your health problems. It takes time and patience to see the benefits, so don’t expect instant changes after just one session.Side effects associated with massage therapy are rare. However, they can include nausea, headaches, soreness in the muscles being massaged, bruising or bleeding in some cases, fatigue, dizziness, mental/emotional discomfort (anxiety), fainting, and skin irritation.Massage therapy is not always available. If you don’t live near a therapist, you may have to travel long distances in order to receive treatment. In addition to the mental health benefits, massage therapy has been shown to provide long-lasting pain relief. One study showed that women with chronic pain who received massage therapy for ten weeks significantly reduced pain and disability.
Can a massage reset nervous system?
Neural Reset Therapy (also called NRT) is a unique soft-tissue therapy quite different from traditional massage. This technique allows the therapist to reset the nervous system to release muscles from excessive tension and pain within seconds.
Massage therapy is a common treatment for pain relief. One of the main reasons people seek massage therapy is for pain relief. Massage helps to relieve pain by dispersing the fluid build-up that can cause inflammation and tension in the muscles. It also releases endorphins, which are hormones that have natural painkilling properties.NRT can seem too good to be true, but it is based on sound scientific principles involving neurological and physiological laws. By stimulating specialized nerve bundles called mechanoreceptors, the therapist is able to send a signal back to the brain to reset the dysfunctional muscle.
After 45 minutes of focused NRT work, Brian was able to significantly improve the client’s range of motion. The client was amazed to report that after the session his pain was completely gone. When Brian followed up with him a few days later, he said the original pain was still gone, but he was a little bit sore and felt his range of motion had diminished somewhat. He scheduled a follow-up NRT session which addressed his remaining issues.Clients have called this method mind-blowing, amazing and magic. While we might agree with the first two, NRT certainly isn’t magic. It is based on sound science.
The entire session is done while you are lying face up. This is an active process, so there will be a lot of communication between client and therapist for the entire session.
Since NRT is done fully clothed, you will want to wear comfortable clothes to your session. Workout clothes work great, as well as any clothes that do not restrict your movement.Neural Reset Therapy (also called NRT) is a unique soft-tissue therapy quite different from traditional massage. This technique allows the therapist to reset the nervous system to release muscles from excessive tension and pain within seconds. 1) A new client came in complaining of sciatica-like symptoms. He was experiencing severe pain in his lower back, legs and buttocks that made it impossible for him to stand up straight or find a comfortable position to sit or sleep. Even though this is a gentle technique, some clients have reported soreness similar to a good workout up to 48 hours after the session. For clients that come in with extreme pain, the soreness can last longer. This is because NRT can target deep muscles that aren’t normally worked on – even with deep tissue massage.2) An 86-year-old client suffering from low back pain could not lie flat on her back. Brian previously had been working on her with traditional massage modalities to significantly reduce the pain, but she still could not lie flat. After NRT training, Brian applied one 45 second reset to her back and she was immediately able to lie flat. She says it is the first time in decades that she has been able to do so. With a quick, gentle reset every once in a while she has been able to maintain this normal range of motion.3) A client came in with constant pain in her elbow from an injury she had suffered years ago. Prior to Brian’s NRT training, he had limited success in reducing the pain. After training, he was able to reduce her pain by about 80% with a few minutes of resetting. The following session he was able to completely remove the pain. Our new facility was created with your comfort in mind. We have yet to see studies showing a reduction in heart attack, strokes, and heart-related deaths, which Dr. Kahn says are unlikely due to the costs of such research projects. So for now, stick to your blood pressure medicines and supplements, as well as a healthy green diet low in cholesterol.
Massage has been shown to acutely reduce blood pressure and heart rate in hypertensive women. Another 2013 study examined eight women with high blood pressure who had an hour-long massage each week for four weeks. At the end of that period, their blood pressure fell by 12 mm Hg systolic (top number). Measurements in their blood reflecting inflammation also fell significantly. According to Dr. Kahn, the drop in markers of inflammation suggests massage therapy may have a body-wide healing effect.
The research suggests that these massage benefits on heart health relates to a decrease in stress. Reductions in salivary and urinary levels of the stress hormone cortisol have been observed in several experiments in humans; however, urinary levels of the stress hormones epinephrine and norepinephrine were not seen to fall during several studies.Since regular massage also helps eliminate stress, it can reduce its associated risks. One of these risks, known as cardiac arrhythmias, causes the heart to pump less effectively, so less blood reaches the brain and other vital organs. Massage also releases contracted muscles and pushes venous blood toward the heart, easing strain on our most vital organ.
In 2008, researchers studied 263 volunteers who underwent massage for 45 to 60 minutes. Average blood pressure fell by 10 mg Hg, and heart rate by 10 beats per minute—after just one treatment. “That’s about as much as you might get from prescribing a new blood pressure medication for life!” says cardiologist Dr. Joel Kahn.In 2013, 50 people with mildly elevated blood pressure received a 15-minute massage three times a week for 10 sessions, while a similar group just relaxed for the same amount of time. By the end of the sessions, only blood pressure of the massage group participants had fallen, and remained lower for several days.
Of course, massage likely won’t hurt your heart, so check with your doctor and then utilize it as a complementary vascular treatment! Did you know cardiovascular disease is the number one killer of men and women in the United States, according to the American Heart Association? Fortunately, massage therapy can serve as a powerful complementary treatment for heart health. Discover how massage benefits the heart, and then spread the word! Additionally, researchers found that massage therapy may reduce pain, anxiety, and muscular tension in cardiac surgery patients. The volunteers who received massage during the 2013 study experienced a 52 percent reduction in pain in comparison to the participants who received an equivalent amount of rest time, who saw no major improvements. This reduction in pain increased over the six-day trial.“I would’ve given this a five stars but my Therapist Carri M. showed up literally a minute before the appointment and massage is supposed to start and the site stated the therapist…” more

Alexis is amazing!! I was nervous to do acupuncture and she made me feel so comfortable. She also took the time to listen to what I was hoping to get out of the appt. Definitely will be going back!
An amazing courtyard entrance, warming check-in, and a great massage. Jessica is extraordinarily skilled and deliberate. A gift from my favorite employers worth repeating. Easy parking, clean, and reasonable rates. This place was highly recommended to me by a coworker and I’m so glad I checked it out! I had a relaxation massage with Stephanie Masi and she was fantastic! Before we started, she talked about her massage style/technique, and she asked the perfect questions to make sure she would target any problem areas I had. I felt so much better after my first session with her and I already can’t wait until my next appointment. Their website is super user friendly and everything from booking/editing/canceling appointments to uploading insurance cards can all be done online prior to your appointment.
From the moment I met Michelle she was warm and inviting. Her massage technique is by far superior to any of the massages I have received in the past. I will definitely be recommending Michelle’s services to my family and friends. Thank you Michelle!!!
