Both the Hull Almshouses (Christopher Pickering Lodge is now a grade II listed building) and the park (Pickering Park, Kingston upon Hull) he built still bear his name, as does a local council ward (Pickering Ward). The restoration of his Coltman Street home was featured in the third season of the BBC television series Restoration Home.Christopher Pickering was born in 1842, the son of a tailor. In 1861 his occupation was that of a fish curer in Kingston upon Hull, and subsequently he became a fish merchant, and by 1881 a ship owner. He controlled together with a Mr. Haldane Pickering & Haldane’s Steam Trawling Co. and the fish and ice merchants Pickering, Haldane & Co.Christopher G. Pickering (9 November 1842 – 22 December 1920) was a British businessman and philanthropist. He made his fortune as a merchant and ship owner, particularly in the Kingston upon Hull fish trade. In 1914 he founded a park, almshouses, church and children’s home in west Hull. The park and almshouses still bear his name.

He attended Canandaigua schools and was a graduate of Canandaigua Academy. George was US Navy Veteran and served with the Seabees in Vietnam and Antarctica. He was a construction mechanic and worked for H.W. Keeney, Al Boyce, Hey’s Enterprises and Pooler Enterprises, from where he retired. George loved to tinker around the house or help friends with projects.
Hopewell – George W. Pickering, Sr., age 79, passed away peacefully after a long illness, on Monday, June 5, 2023. He is survived by three children, George W. (Sue) Pickering, Jr., Lori Ross and Gail Pickering; three grandchildren, Kelly, Jessica and Rebecca; six great-grandchildren, Camden, Sophia, Addisyn, Kennedy, Emmett and Emmily; two sisters, Kathy (Tom) Dannahe and Jane (Chris) Finn; nieces and nephews including, Rob (Jennilyn) Pickering and Matt (Jennifer) Pickering. He was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy A. Other neighbors said that Thompkins had moved in with Pickering around two years ago and mothered his youngest child, who was around a year and a half. Pickering had three older children who lived with another woman, they said.Police recovered a black semi-automatic firearm at the scene and after a preliminary investigation determined that Pickering, who had no prior arrests, had shot Thompkins before turning the weapon on himself, according to police.
