The West Side features iconic residences like the Dakota on 72nd and The Century on 63rd Street. It’s a bit more residential than the East Side and features fewer boutiques and restaurants. The A/C line runs parallel to the 1/2/3 and gives residents several viable options for navigating around the city.The East Side is bigger and more spread out yet doesn’t extend as far uptown. Lenox Hill, which encompasses the southern part of the UES and directly abuts Turtle Bay, has a distinctly younger and more energetic vibe than the neighborhood at large and you’ll find a population of young professionals living in the brownstones and high rises here. Yorkville, in the upper northeast section of the UES, has traditionally been a quiet and more affordable area, which has also made it popular with young professionals and families. The extension of the 2nd Avenue subway line to Yorkville has spurred new development and increasing home prices. Internationally recognized as a premier museum, this former home of American steel magnate Henry Claye Frick is known for its distinguished Old Master paintings and outstanding examples of European sculpture and decorative arts. Bemelmans Bar is a timeless bar that continues to attract socialites, politicians, movie stars, and moguls with its extensive drink menu and nightly live entertainment.

One of the oldest family-run German restaurants in the United States, dating back over one hundred years to a time when Yorkville was a bustling German neighborhood. The Upper East Side is bordered on the north by East Harlem, on the east by the East River, on the south by Turtle Bay, and on the west by Central Park. “Manhattanites are so sick of this nonsense: sidewalk sheds go up and decades later they are still up. It is frankly embarrassing for us as a City that we cannot get these repairs done and get the sheds down,” Kallos told Patch.The one-acre park, on Second Avenue between East 90th and 91st streets, was built in 1979 by the city’s Housing Preservation Department before being transferred to the Parks Department in the 1990s. Its four-leaf clover shape divides the park into four quadrants, including a little-used grassless area that has been repurposed as a dog run. Kallos said he has tried to persuade the city to offer decent, temporary apartments to the residents of 1772 Second Ave., where they could stay while much-needed repairs are carried out. Two buildings have had their utilities shut off: an empty building under construction, as well as 504 East 89th Street, where 10 apartments were temporarily without water, Kallos said. Still, it triggered fears that the city is unprepared for extreme weather triggered by climate change, having come on the heels of another sinkhole on the Upper West Side and a thunderstorm that flooded subway stations. Kallos told Patch last week that “I don’t want to see a Miami building collapse happen in New York City.”

The park occupies the former site of the Jacob Ruppert & Company brewery, which closed in 1965 and was replaced by the Ruppert Towers apartment complex — as well as the park, which opened in 1979.UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — Ruppert Park, one of the Upper East Side’s small but treasured green spaces, is set for a major overhaul thanks to an infusion of new funding, City Councilmember Ben Kallos told Patch.

Within 24 hours of Thursday’s collapse, workers had rerouted a sewer line that had been affected by the sinkhole and covered up the site with dirt. Over the weekend, crews expanded the hole to expose more utilities nearby, the DEP spokesperson said.

Kallos said the Blood Center should move forward instead with an alternate proposal it has included in planning documents: a modest, five-story building that would achieve its stated goals of creating new lab space and replacing its current, 91-year-old home.

The city provided no timeline for when work would begin, saying details would be determined during the design process. The Parks and Transportation departments will present the project Thursday night to Community Board 8.

Eligible New Yorkers can apply online before the June 29 deadline. Kallos’s office will host informational sessions at 6 p.m. on May 19 and June 16. (More information below).

The pavement on East 89th Street between York and East End avenues caved in around 8:30 a.m. Thursday. Initially measuring about 20 feet deep and 8 by 8 feet in diameter, workers later widened it by about 7 feet to perform repairs, City Councilmember Ben Kallos said on Monday.That delay was a result of pricing disagreements between the developer and the city’s Housing Preservation Department, as well as fluctuations in the city’s real estate market during the pandemic, according to a spokesperson for Kallos.The hole measures 20 feet deep and about 15 by 15 feet in diameter, a spokesperson for the city’s Emergency Management department said. A 12-inch water main and a six-inch sewer pipe are being eyed as possible causes, investigators told City Councilmember Ben Kallos. “John Finley Walk is an incredible spot to take a stroll and enjoy the waterfront,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said in a statement. “These infrastructure improvements will ensure New Yorkers will be able to enjoy this beautiful promenade for generations to come.” WEST VILLAGE, NY — The day a sidewalk scaffolding shed first went up over part of a West 9th Street block, Rudy Giuliani was mayor of New York City, “Shakespeare In Love” had recently won Best Picture at the Academy Awards and Britney Spears had just earned her first No. 1 hit.Kallos, whose position could be influential once the City Council considers the proposal, has not taken a formal stance on the project but has strongly hinted that he opposes it.

“New Yorkers need to demand it at this point,” Kallos said of his bill. “Landlords don’t want to do the work, they don’t want to take care of their buildings.”An investigation into the cause is ongoing and no conclusions have been reached yet, a spokesperson for the Department of Environmental Protection said Monday.”The park has a very ’70s design,” he said. “Walking by the park as a child, all I saw was a giant six-foot fence and overgrowth that just doesn’t seem welcoming.” News of the repairs was hailed by local officials, including City Councilmember Ben Kallos, U.S. Rep. Carolyn Maloney and Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer. The two winning projects in this year’s round of participatory budgeting in Ben Kallos’s District 5 are: $750,00 for laptops and other STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) programs at 15 schools in the district; and $187,000 to plant 50 trees with guards on sidewalks.

The money means that work may begin as soon as Fall 2022 and wrap up the following year — once plans have been presented to Community Board 8 and the Public Design Commission later this year.Monday and Tuesday, the city planned to bring in materials from out of state to continue cleaning out and replacing the damaged sewer line, Kallos said.

It is a signature issue for Kallos, who since 2016 has been pushing for legislation that would require building owners to make repairs within 180 days of reporting an unsafe condition. The racial composition of the Upper East Side changed moderately from 2000 to 2010. The most significant changes were the increase in the Asian population by 38% (5,145), the increase in the Hispanic/Latino population by 19% (2,537), and the decrease in the White population by 3% (5,644). The small Black population increased by 3% (191), while the even smaller population of all other races increased by 15% (628). Taking into account the three census tabulation areas, the decrease of the White population was concentrated Yorkville and Upper East Side-Carnegie Hill especially, while the increases of the other racial groups were evenly split across the three areas.

The area’s north–south avenues are Fifth, Madison, Park, Lexington, Third, Second, First, York, and East End Avenues, with the latter running only from East 79th Street to East 90th Street. The major east–west streets are 59th Street, 72nd Street, 79th Street, 86th Street and 96th Street.

The Upper East Side is one of few areas of Manhattan where Republicans constitute more than 20% of the electorate. Four of the top five ZIP Codes in the nation for political contributions are in Manhattan. The top ZIP Code, 10021, is on the Upper East Side and generated the most money for the 2004 presidential campaigns of both George W. Bush and John Kerry.

Construction of the Third Avenue El, opened from 1878 in sections, followed by the Second Avenue El, opened in 1879, linked the Upper East Side’s middle class and skilled artisans closely to the heart of the city, and confirmed the modest nature of the area to their east. The ghostly “Hamilton Square”, which had appeared as one of the few genteel interruptions of the grid plan on city maps since the Commissioners’ Plan of 1811, was intended to straddle what had now become the Harlem Railroad right-of-way between 66th and 69th Streets; it never materialized, though during the Panic of 1857 its unleveled ground was the scene of an open-air mass meeting called in July to agitate for the secession of the city and its neighboring counties from New York State, and the city divided its acreage into house lots and sold them. From the 1880s the neighborhood of Yorkville became a suburb of middle class Germans.In 2019, the highest concentration of felony assaults in the Upper East Side was near the intersection of 93rd Street and First Avenue, where there were 10 felony assaults. The highest concentration of robberies, on the other hand, was near the intersection of 86th Street and Lexington Avenue, where there were 19 robberies.

The Metropolitan Museum Historic District was designated a city district in 1977. It consists of properties on Fifth Avenue between 79th and 86th Streets, outside the Metropolitan Museum of Art, as well as properties on several side streets.

Neighborhood boundaries in New York City are not officially set, but according to the Encyclopedia of New York City the Upper East Side is bounded by 59th Street in the south, 96th Street on the north, Fifth Avenue to the west and the East River to the east. The AIA Guide to New York City extends the northern boundary to 106th Street near Fifth Avenue.The Upper East Side Historic District was designated as a city district in 1981 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. The city district runs from 59th to 78th Streets along Fifth Avenue, and up to Third Avenue at some points. It is composed of residential structures built after the American Civil War; mansions and townhouses built at the beginning of the 20th century; and apartment buildings erected later on. The city district was slightly expanded in 2010 with 74 additional buildings.The Upper East Side is patrolled by the 19th Precinct of the NYPD, located at 153 East 67th Street. The 19th Precinct has a lower crime rate than in the 1990s, with crimes across all categories having decreased by 82.2% between 1990 and 2022. The precinct reported 2 murders, 12 rapes, 229 robberies, 173 felony assaults, 278 burglaries, 1,724 grand larcenies, and 192 grand larcenies auto in 2022.
