This fitting may be located on the motor facing the boat, or it may be located under the cowl or under a cover in the midsection. Outboards equipped with this type of fitting often can be flushed without starting the motor, and in fact may be designed to be flushed without starting the motor—read the owner’s manual for specific instructions.

Note: Never start an outboard motor without a water supply—it must either be in the water or connected to a hose providing water. Water lubricates the vanes of the rubber water pump impeller, and running the motor without a water supply for even a few seconds can damage or destroy the impeller.

If the boat is kept at a dock this type of flush connection usually can be used to flush the motor when it its tilted clear of the water. After connecting the hose to the motor, let the water run for about 10 minutes or as instructed in the owner’s manual.Instructions for flushing an outboard vary by brand and model and can be found in the owner’s manual. If your manual is missing, you may be able to find a digital copy online, or a dealer can order a new paper copy for you. Follow those instructions exactly as it’s possible to damage the water pump impeller, or to flush the motor incompletely, if you flush the motor incorrectly.

Regular flushing with freshwater is key to maintaining any outboard motor used in saltwater. Most outboard manufacturers recommend a freshwater flush after every use in saltwater to clear the cooling passages of salt residue and scale that can accumulate and impede the flow of vital cooling water through the engine. Outboards used in brackish water, or in freshwater that’s silty or muddy, should also be flushed. Flushing is usually an easy procedure, and can often be accomplished with the boat on a trailer or in the water at a dock or mooring.Flush muffs look like big earmuffs. The rubber cups fit over the cooling water intake ports on the outboard gearcase and are held in place by a metal spring or clamp. A garden hose is attached to one of the rubber cups.Turn on the engine and idle for 5 minutes, DO NOT rev the engine or drive the vehicle. I want to share some photos of the Outboard Covers of America “Splash Cover” I got for my 200 Mercury ProXS a few weeks back. I wanted to have it on the motor for a while before posting a review. I’m not one to show off my material things. But, I had a hard time finding photos of this brand on bass boats so hopefully this will help someone down the road when they are shopping for a motor cover.This is typically what would happen if you made your outboard cover out of a material that does not have breathability such as vinyl or even neoprene which is used on wet suits. Fill with water to cover over water intakes, start your motor and it will flush out salt. Obviously, you cannot put the motor into gear as the prop will cut the bag! You should never allow the “guide strap” to take the weight of the water as it could damage your cowling/outboard due to the weight of the water:- 1 gallon of water = 8.3 Pounds (roughly). Once flushing is complete undo the drain plug in the flush bag to empty the water out.

An Outboard motor cools through water flowing through the engine and that water flow is supplied by the water pump in the lower unit up through a water tube and into the block of the engine. In that block the water runs through a series of water galleries, those galleries can be likened to veins and arteries in the body. Blockages that we find in the outboards for salt corrosion and sand are no different from cholesterol.

What we find is if you do not flush your motor as per the manufacturer’s specifications you will over time get a build-up of residual salt, and that salt will crystallize in the water flow galleries and being pressed against the alloy structure of the head they will slowly corrode and pit.It does not matter what brand of outboard you own all outboards can suffer the same damage if not flushed properly. I will show you the internal of an outboard that is suffering from lack of proper flushing. This customers engine has stopped running and we are going to show you why and how this could have been avoided. But first…

Fortunately for this customer motor, the scorings are still good, no scouring or marks on the bores so this engine will run again. To achieve this we will be cleaning all the corrosion and sand out and replacing all the gaskets. Not only on the head but we will also do the side plate inner and outer gaskets, we will lift the engine block to replace the base gasket, replace the thermostat and water pump kit…which all comes at a cost that is avoidable if you were to flush the motor properly.

That example was the good side of the motor, check out the next image of the other side of the motor which is completely blocked. Full of salt build-up and even sand which is a result of not only not flushing the motor correctly but also running the motor through the shallow water pumping a lot of sand up through the outboard.

This will then build up until the water galleries are completely blocked, for example in the video above and image below you can see a complete blockage of salt and corrosion in this part of the head which is stopping water flow around that top piston. You can also see around the anode quite a bit of salt. That all needs cleaning out for the engine to have proper water flow to keep it cool.You’ve landed on our US site. Keep the engine vertical after flushing so that all water drains from the powerhead.Mercury’s procedure varies by engine size and series. Smaller and midsize four-stroke outboards use the flush port at the rear of the engine. The engine must be warmed up to open the thermostat and circulate water throughout the engine’s cooling passages completely. The engine can be vertical or tilted. Remove the prop, and run in neutral at no more than an idle speed for at least five minutes. The water supply should not be opened more than halfway to regulate water pressure.
