This involves timely oil changes, timely services, and all that is recommended by the manufacturer. If you can, try to drive your car at least as much as that keeps the required circulation of the engine oil and later saves you from the costly repairs.Engine oil is meant to cycle through and lubricate the engine components to help them function smoothly. Basically, engine oil is meant to remain in motion. When a car takes short trips or remains idle more often than not, the engine oil particles start leaving deposits that keep on building up sludge inside the engine. An element as small as 25 microns (approx. 1/1000 of one inch) can be removed by the best of the oil filters available. Particles even smaller than the aforementioned size are there in the oil that just can’t be filtered out. Over time these tiny particles accumulate together and build up sludge. The sludge, however prepared, increasingly resists the flow of engine oil. Engine flush chemicals should not be used for a long period (more than 5-10 minutes). just use it right before an oil change. Longer applications of chemical additives used for engine flush can damage the engine. We are well aware of the vitality of your car’s engine and what role it plays in enhancing the drive and ride quality. Thereby, proper maintenance of the engine is something you shouldn’t overlook. Of course, changing the oil is the primary need to keep your car’s engine in healthy condition, but there is more to engine maintenance than just oil changes. Engine flushing usually comes in handy when your car isn’t driven much or irregular changing of engine oil is causing troubles in the engine.

In this process, technicians add chemical additives in the engine oil to break down sludge or carbon deposits from old oil and then replace the old oil and oil filter. In engine flushing, some chemical compositions are added to the engine oil to break down the sludge or any other deposits from the engine oil. This can be done in three ways by your car’s engine suitability. This issue, if neglected, can eventually lead to major troubles such as improper working valves, spark plugs, exhaust sensors, soot coming out of the exhaust, etc. Even the replacement of the engine could become a possibility that can be immensely heavy for your pocket.

Following the instructions in the owner’s manual to make sure that all the fresh water is drained from the motor. This is especially important if the temperature is or will be below freezing—if water freezes in the engine it could damage the engine block. In most cases this is as simple as lowering the motor all the way down with the boat level on its trailer. Most outboards manufactured in the last 10 to 15 years have a built-in flush connection that either uses a snap fitting adapter or a threaded fitting to connect the motor to a garden hose. This fitting may be located on the motor facing the boat, or it may be located under the cowl or under a cover in the midsection. Outboards equipped with this type of fitting often can be flushed without starting the motor, and in fact may be designed to be flushed without starting the motor—read the owner’s manual for specific instructions.
A flushing bag is a soft plastic, canvas or vinyl bag with a fitting for the garden hose. With the boat on its trailer and the motor tilted down, the bag is fit around the gearcase and filled with water so that the cooling water inlets are covered.
Note: Never start an outboard motor without a water supply—it must either be in the water or connected to a hose providing water. Water lubricates the vanes of the rubber water pump impeller, and running the motor without a water supply for even a few seconds can damage or destroy the impeller.
How long is a flush bag good for?
Any IV fluid bag that has been infiltrated should be labeled with the date and time of initial use and discarded after 24 hours.
If the boat is kept at a dock this type of flush connection usually can be used to flush the motor when it its tilted clear of the water. After connecting the hose to the motor, let the water run for about 10 minutes or as instructed in the owner’s manual.Instructions for flushing an outboard vary by brand and model and can be found in the owner’s manual. If your manual is missing, you may be able to find a digital copy online, or a dealer can order a new paper copy for you. Follow those instructions exactly as it’s possible to damage the water pump impeller, or to flush the motor incompletely, if you flush the motor incorrectly.
Regular flushing with freshwater is key to maintaining any outboard motor used in saltwater. Most outboard manufacturers recommend a freshwater flush after every use in saltwater to clear the cooling passages of salt residue and scale that can accumulate and impede the flow of vital cooling water through the engine. Outboards used in brackish water, or in freshwater that’s silty or muddy, should also be flushed. Flushing is usually an easy procedure, and can often be accomplished with the boat on a trailer or in the water at a dock or mooring.Flush muffs look like big earmuffs. The rubber cups fit over the cooling water intake ports on the outboard gearcase and are held in place by a metal spring or clamp. A garden hose is attached to one of the rubber cups.Turn on the engine and idle for 5 minutes, DO NOT rev the engine or drive the vehicle. Motor Flush will clean out dirt, sludge, and contaminants from your engine. 5 minutes is all you need for an effective cleaning.
With the engine turned off, check to see that the oil level is within specification. Add the entire bottle of Motor Flush to your cold engine before changing oil or oil filter. Engines with oil capacities of 10 quarts or more may require a second bottle of Motor Flush.
With the engine turned off, drain the engine oil. Give the oil a few additional minutes to fully drain from the engine. Add new oil and replace the oil filter as part of a full service. Use MOTOR MEDIC Motor Flush with every oil change to keep your engine running cleaner and longer.
In technical terms the material is an acrylic polymeric impregnated fabric. In other words it is a coated polyester that has a very high breaking strength, abrasion, mould and ultraviolet resistant. It also has excellent colour fastness and lasting outdoor durability. In fact Outboard Covers offers a 2 year guarantee against fading and rotting. We also offer a 3 years limited warranty on our high quality workmanship (commercial use 12 months on each). We have sold covers all over the World and our reputation is second to none for service and quality.Yes it MAY but as it is not breathable it will cause moisture to build up under both the cowl and cover. This will corrode the motor and damage the paint and decals.
Polysoft® II offers strength, dimensional stability, and abrasion resistance with the addition of a lightweight, non-woven soft felt backed polyester backing. Polysoft® II also features great water, UV, and mildew resistance to endure marine environments. In summary, the OCA is a very high quality product. It is expensive, but I do believe it is a better product than its less expensive competition. And, I did get blown into a gnarly tree while landing a fish about a week after I got it that would have certainly chewed up the side of my bare cowling; I just dusted off the wood chips from the cover and it looks like nothing ever happened.
The cover itself is very snug, to the point that it is difficult to install by yourself, and the elastic band at the bottom of the cover hugs the bottom of the motor cowling in a way that it does not ride-up over time. An added benefit to this grip point is that it does not cover up the trim button on the side of the engine. There is a small Velcro strap at the front of the cover that is little more than a comfort thing; It fits so snugly that I don’t think it is even necessary.
These things are expensive, more expensive than some of the more well-known brands like Tuff Skinz. However, I can also tell you that the OCA cover fits tighter, looks better, and is not likely to leave any rub marks like the Tuff Skinz will (my motor already has some rub rash from the previous owner who had a Tuff Skinz on it).

Is engine flush recommended?
It’s recommended to flush the engine before the oil change so that the engine is thoroughly clean for the new oil and oil filter.
I want to share some photos of the Outboard Covers of America “Splash Cover” I got for my 200 Mercury ProXS a few weeks back. I wanted to have it on the motor for a while before posting a review. I’m not one to show off my material things. But, I had a hard time finding photos of this brand on bass boats so hopefully this will help someone down the road when they are shopping for a motor cover. This is typically what would happen if you made your outboard cover out of a material that does not have breathability such as vinyl or even neoprene which is used on wet suits. They do not have what Polysoft® has!

That’s just me; I paid a lot of money for this boat and I’m not going to put something on it that I don’t like looking at. Unfortunately, these decals are not readily available so message me for details if that’s something you would want. I am not a representative or affiliated with OCA in any way, but I can get you in touch with someone who is if you want those decals.Place the flush bag CAREFULLY under the skeg & then attach the “guide strap” which goes over the top of the cowling. Fill with water to cover over water intakes, start your motor and it will flush out salt. Obviously, you cannot put the motor into gear as the prop will cut the bag! You should never allow the “guide strap” to take the weight of the water as it could damage your cowling/outboard due to the weight of the water:- 1 gallon of water = 8.3 Pounds (roughly). Once flushing is complete undo the drain plug in the flush bag to empty the water out.
Polysoft® offers strength, dimensional stability, and abrasion resistance with the addition of a lightweight, non-woven soft felt like polyester backing. Polysoft® also features great water, UV, and mildew resistance to endure marine environments. As of Jan 2016 OCA have invested in automated fabric cutting machines (CNC) and have purchased x2 large format printers so we have reduced our pricing to be very competative (if not beat any competitors price).
Most people are not aware that a replacement cowl is extremely expensive and if new decals are required these are usually extra and can cost as much as one of our Splash covers.

Flushing is designed to rid the engine of any residue and debris that clogs up the mechanisms and hinders their performance. To flush the engine, the oil is removed and a chemical is poured in where the oil would normally go so that it flows through various parts of the engine, removing any gunk along the way. After the chemical has done its job and flowed back out of the engine through the bottom, new oil is added. Though this type of treatment is seldom needed on newer cars, old cars where the old hasn’t been changed in a long time may benefit from flushing the engine. Other systems requiring flush services include, radiator and cooling systems, power steering, transmissions, differentials and brake systems. All of these systems lubricate components that can be equitably as expensive as engines.

An Outboard motor cools through water flowing through the engine and that water flow is supplied by the water pump in the lower unit up through a water tube and into the block of the engine. In that block the water runs through a series of water galleries, those galleries can be likened to veins and arteries in the body. Blockages that we find in the outboards for salt corrosion and sand are no different from cholesterol.
How does a flush bag work?
A blow bag (also referred to as a drain flush bag, plumbing bladder, or pipe bladder) is a heavy-duty rubber balloon that is attached to a garden hose to clear drain clogs using water pressure. It looks like a rubber pickle with the hose fitting at one end.
What we find is if you do not flush your motor as per the manufacturer’s specifications you will over time get a build-up of residual salt, and that salt will crystallize in the water flow galleries and being pressed against the alloy structure of the head they will slowly corrode and pit.It does not matter what brand of outboard you own all outboards can suffer the same damage if not flushed properly. I will show you the internal of an outboard that is suffering from lack of proper flushing. This customers engine has stopped running and we are going to show you why and how this could have been avoided. But first…
Fortunately for this customer motor, the scorings are still good, no scouring or marks on the bores so this engine will run again. To achieve this we will be cleaning all the corrosion and sand out and replacing all the gaskets. Not only on the head but we will also do the side plate inner and outer gaskets, we will lift the engine block to replace the base gasket, replace the thermostat and water pump kit…which all comes at a cost that is avoidable if you were to flush the motor properly.
Be sure to run that outboard before buying and check its temperature (refer to the manufacturer of that motor for optimal running temp info if unsure). You do not want to end up with an outboard that has corrosion build up in the motor because it’s going to cost you money immediately to be reliable on the water. If in doubt then next time your in for a service get the technicians at your local dealership to run a temp test with their Thermo laser guns as we offer here at Stones Corner Marine.
That example was the good side of the motor, check out the next image of the other side of the motor which is completely blocked. Full of salt build-up and even sand which is a result of not only not flushing the motor correctly but also running the motor through the shallow water pumping a lot of sand up through the outboard.
Find out how to avoid expensive repairs to your outboard motor in this quick guide from James Cullen of Stones Corner Marine in Brisbane. We join James in the workshop and through a client’s motor that is in for repair, James shares an example of what can happen to your motor if not flushed properly after use in salt water
This will then build up until the water galleries are completely blocked, for example in the video above and image below you can see a complete blockage of salt and corrosion in this part of the head which is stopping water flow around that top piston. You can also see around the anode quite a bit of salt. That all needs cleaning out for the engine to have proper water flow to keep it cool. You’ve landed on our US site. Please visit our International site to access a wider range of features and products, as well as to find locations that carry RAILBLAZA products near you.
We have customers telling us they flush their outboards thoroughly, thoroughly to them is about 5mins which is just not long enough. Yamaha recommends a min of 15mins flushing after use in saltwater and we would assume most other outboard manufacturers recommendations would be the same…If you cheat your outboard flush it will cost you.
Let’s hope with better flushing process you to can avoid the problems and costs this client has now incurred. Thanks For watching James Cullen, Stones Corner Marine. Address: 117 Old Cleveland Rd, Greenslopes QLD 4120 – WEBSITE HERE
Should I flush my outboard?
Regular flushing with freshwater is key to maintaining any outboard motor used in saltwater. Most outboard manufacturers recommend a freshwater flush after every use in saltwater to clear the cooling passages of salt residue and scale that can accumulate and impede the flow of vital cooling water through the engine.

The ultimate result of overheating is engine failure which triggers other expensive damage to the motor.I wholeheartedly recommend Outboard Covers Australia. Our team of technicians at Edencraft Marine have over fifty years experience in the industry. We’re still yet to come across a problem we can’t solve!
If you’ve returned home late, or you’re in a caravan park where the noise of running the engines is an issue, then this is better than not doing it at all.
IMPORTANT: don’t walk away from your motor while it’s running. If the hose fitting blows, or something else goes wrong you’ll need to turn off the motors immediately to prevent damage.Salt build-ups inside your motor are a cancer that cause costly issues down the track and keep you off the water (outboard servicing can be costly…).

What is the use of motor flush?
A: Motor Flush is needed to clean out the built up dirt, deposits, and contaminants that can accumulate even with steady oil changes; periodic cleaning will extend the life of your engine. Cleaning will remove sludge that can block oil flow and cause engine damage.
For flush-muff attachments, temporarily cover the auxiliary water inlets with heavy tape on their 15- to 30-hp models and high-performance Lightning M2-type gear cases (remember to remove the tape afterward). Water pressure should be between 20 and 40 psi. (You can buy a pressure gauge attachment at a hardware store to monitor psi.) Flush for at least five minutes at an idle speed, with the engine in a vertical position. When using the flushing port, it is not necessary to run the engine. Keep the engine vertical after flushing so that all water drains from the powerhead.Mercury’s procedure varies by engine size and series. Smaller and midsize four-stroke outboards use the flush port at the rear of the engine. The engine must be warmed up to open the thermostat and circulate water throughout the engine’s cooling passages completely. The engine can be vertical or tilted. Remove the prop, and run in neutral at no more than an idle speed for at least five minutes. The water supply should not be opened more than halfway to regulate water pressure.
