This is based upon my experience as a piano teacher and again conglomerating that with some research online and in the piano community. Of course results may vary and it is highly dependant on many factors, significantly though, how much practice has been dedicated to it. Students who don’t practice that regularly and keep forgetting the notes or finger patterns for example, will perpetually feel stiff at the piano and make very slow progress.

It’s just best to have a few early stage pieces under your belt first and some experience with chords, broken chords and scales. At the point at which you have developed some foundational technique and control over your fingers where the basics have stopped feeling stiff and awkward, you’ll have a much more beneficial experience learning Fur Elise. So if you already have this experience, I highly recommend tackling this shorter version of Fur Elise.You may be able to get through the notes with some hard work, but you likely won’t have the necessary skills to execute certain moments and fast flourishes in this anywhere near to a standard required to make them sound musical. It may sound disjointed and with bad feel and timing. You will develop much more control and musicality in your playing with something more manageable, technically. So why is Fur Elise so popular? Fur Elise is popular amongst beginner pianists as learning a recognizable and impressive sounding, yet manageable piece, is very motivating. Teachers like it too because it helps students work on a variety of skills including broken chords, expressive playing, relaxed movement, rubato and pedalling.

Words like intermediate and beginner are also very broad and although I don’t really like to use them that much, they help to sum things up. Two ‘intermediate’ players may still have very different innate skills, experience of very different styles of playing or skills and learn at different paces. Person A may learn this piece faster than person B, but the opposite may be true for a different piece.

We’ll take a look at the 2 versions to see exactly what’s involved technically to help you decide whether or not this piece is suitable for you. In both cases, bear in mind that learning how to just play the notes is far easier than what it takes to perform it with any real sense of musicality. The colder temperatures cause the fingers to stiffen up, often making them difficult to move fluidly.The biggest benefit of a metronome is that it helps pianists maintain a consistent pulse. This is important when it comes to speeding up your piano playing. The more stable the pianist is with their fingers, the quicker they’ll be able to execute those musical passages.Each book has a set of short etudes that help deal with very specific technical issues. The exercises are well written, have dynamics, and read more like normal pieces which help with applying these same principles to whatever main piece you are working on.

This is why I always suggest pianists use hand warmers during a recital or practice. The heat helps the fluids flow in the hands, which helps the muscles breathe.

This is important to consider when doing slow practice especially. In some cases, the movements you use in slow practice won’t work the same way once the tempo has kicked up.A quick tip for speeding up your piano playing is to think much bigger about the music. Rather than looking at each individual note as you play, think about the harmonies instead.

I’ll gradually repeat the process, adding 5 beats of speed to the metronome each time. Eventually, I’ll finish at my desired fast tempo, and by this point, I’m able to play through them with a strong or light touch as well.Reading sheet music is a major factor in playing ability. With the music memorized, all of the focus can be put into the choreography of playing. If you’re wondering how to play faster on the piano then you’re in the right place. I’ll break down a few specific exercises and techniques I use to increase playing speed. These techniques are mostly for intermediate to advanced pianists, but beginner pianists and adult pianists can also apply these same strategies. Ideally, the less motion a pianist uses, the quicker they can play. Developing the proper technique is all about limiting the amount of unnecessary energy being exerted. Another suggestion is to invest in a few of the well-known method of books by Haydn and Czerny. The School of Velocity book by Czerny is one I highly recommend. You may also want to have a look at the Art of Finger Dexterity technique book too. The hand shape is the more important of the three. Anytime a pianist stretches or lifts their fingers beyond the desired position, it adds tension. When tension is added, the speed of playing is greatly reduced.Instead of combing through each note, you could simply funnel out the fingers needed to play it and focus the attention elsewhere. Doing a simple chord analysis of a piece will help you learn it faster.

I recommend trying out some piano finger stretches, there are a few finger exercises here that you can try. Stretches work best when they are performed before practice, and during breaks.

With proper chord analysis, it’s also easier for pianists to memorize the piece, and anticipate which notes are coming next in the pattern. Being able to glue together the various musical ideas in any given work is really crucial to playing it cleanly, and with good speed.So, how do you play faster on the piano? To play fast on the piano, a pianist must develop strong muscles and dexterity in the fingers. Routinely practicing scales, arpeggios, and other technical exercises help build the necessary endurance to play passages of music fast.

This is why it is crucial that pianists rest their fingers as much as possible during practice. When the fingers are refreshed, they’ll be able to play more efficiently.Proper piano technique is not simply playing those exercises each day. The exercises should be played correctly with proper hand position, distribution of arm weight, and with a good tone.

One exercise I like to do is start with the metronome at a really slow beat of 60. I’ll play through 4 to 8 measures of music at this tempo with firm yet relaxed fingers. The idea is to maintain a strong tone, but without exerting a lot of energy.Slow practice is also the main ingredient to faster piano playing. As your hands become more comfortable with where to go and how to execute certain passages, naturally speed will come along with that.

There are also adults who seem determined to get to the magical grade 8 in as little time as possible. I’ve heard people claim they did it in 5 years. Possible? Sure. Recommended? Absolutely not.Getting third-party feedback is valuable, even if they only hear you once and can therefore only comment on the things they hear on the day. Still, getting that expert opinion help you work out what you might need to practise more.On average, exams are pretty good indicators of skill and competence. But we must also keep in mind that they are only a snapshot. You get 1 chance to prove yourself. It has happened that otherwise competent, well-prepared students completely fall apart during the test, resulting in a lower score or even a fail. By trying to go as fast as possible through harder and harder repertoire, you are more likely to get injured, you’ll skip important developmental learning stages and miss out on a lot of experience. All while single-mindedly pursuing a number on a piece of paper. All in all, exams can be an enriching part of your piano journey, but they are in no way a necessity. When used correctly, they can offer an invigorating challenge, if used incorrectly, they are often the main reason students quit piano lessons.First of all, the grades are not necessarily evenly spaced. It can take 2 or 3 years to work up to Grade 1. Between grade 5 and 6 can easily take 2 years, and the same for later grades. For instance, in ABRSM, Grade 1 I would consider late beginner level*. Grades 2 and 3 are early intermediate. Grades 4 and 5 are intermediate levels. Grade 6 is late intermediate, Grade 7 is early advanced. Grade 8 is advanced. These notes will contain all sorts of useful feedback on your performance that day. It may tell you they loved how you brought out the melody line, or they may tell the opposite (and you can deduct that’s why you lost some points). *Please note grade 1 DOES NOT refer to “year 1”. For most people, it takes 2 years to reach Grade 1 standard, and for busy adults oftentimes more. It depends on how much practice can be accomplished. For this reason, many boards offer ‘pre-grade 1’ exams. The exam boards are lenient when it comes to choosing your exam path. They don’t require you to take a grade before moving on to the next. This means you can start your exam path by taking whatever grade you’re currently playing at (note: there are some additional theory requirements for taking grade 6 and up with most exam boards).

Exams are a complementary tool in the toolkit of the teacher. They should be used as a motivator and as a benchmarking tool. They MUST NEVER EVER completely dictate the teaching. Allowing this kind of flexibility is a valuable decision by the boards. Sometimes you don’t want the hassle of exams and then 2 years later you might change your mind. At that point, your skillset will have developed and you might be able to skip a grade. The piano exams are conducted by an examiner trained by the exam board. He or she holds deep knowledge of the competency requirements for each level (or grade, as most exam boards call them).By taking and passing a grade exam, you get an idea of where you are at on the spectrum of piano-playing competence. By passing multiple grades over the years, you’ll have physical proof (certificates) that you’ve improved and that’s an incredibly powerful motivator.

Adult students who want to progress fast sometimes mistakenly think that by taking an exam each year, or even 2 exams a year, they will “fast track” their skill level.There are quite a number of exam boards in the world, but the most popular ones are ABRSM, RCM and Trinity College London. In Australia, the AMEB is also a common option. Each exam board sets forth its own exam criteria and submission rules, but most are quite similar.
