Clarity grade indicates the number of imperfections, known as inclusions. Nearly all gemstones have inclusions, but luckily for moissanite, most of its inclusions are not visible to the naked eye and require intense magnification to be seen.
Moissanite is an affordable diamond simulant that’s becoming a popular alternative for engagement rings and jewelry thanks to its alluring flashes of color and price point. Just like diamonds, rubies, and sapphires, moissanite is graded based on several quality factors known as the 4C’s. To help you make informed moissanite purchases, we will guide you through the 4C’s of stone grading and every aspect of the moissanite grading scale.
Clouds: These are milky looking spots within the stone, and when viewed under magnification, you can see that they are actually clusters of needle and crystal inclusions.Cut grade denotes how well a stone is cut and with grades ranging from Excellent to Poor. With excellent cut grades, light can best travel throughout the stone and sparkle. Alternatively, poorly cut stones will not allow light to effectively travel throughout the stone, resulting in a lifeless looking moissanite. The grade chart for cut is simply:
Needles: These thin, needle-like imperfections are the most common type of inclusions for moissanite. Needles are difficult to see without close observation, and only compromise the moissanite’s beauty if many needles are clustered together.Moissanite’s clarity is graded depending on the number of inclusions the stone has. These grades can be brown down into five easy to understand categories:
What is the difference between GIA and GRA moissanite?
Unlike GIA, which is a certificate of the quality of a specific diamond after it has been inspected by a professional, GRA is more like a receipt that acknowledges what cut the moissanite is.
For diamonds, carat weight refers to how heavy the stone is. However, moissanite is less dense than diamonds which makes the two stones difficult to compare by weight. Due to the density difference, a moissanite’s “carat weight” is denoted by the stone’s size in millimeters. For example, a one-carat diamond is comparable to a 6.5mm moissanite.
Knots: These inclusions look like white or transparent crystals. Avoid moissanite with many knots because they also worsen the stone’s structural integrity.

Feathers: These inclusions are miniature fractures within the gem, which look like a crack or a feather. Never buy moissanite with many feathers because they will have weaker structural integrity and can more easily fracture.
Chips: These inclusions are shallow openings on the stone’s surface, typically resulting from its owner accidentally damaging the moissanite during daily wear. Chips are commonly seen on the gemstone’s culet, facet junctions, and girdle.Knowing moissanite grades is valuable for shoppers because the knowledge to fully understand the characteristics they want their stone to have, allows them to shop with confidence. The best cut grade for a Moissanite will be excellent. This will allow light to effortlessly travel through the stone, thus ensuring an exuberant sparkle! Color grade refers to the amount of color present in the stone graded from a scale of D for colorless to Z for a slight yellow tint. Moissanite color grades are broken down into three major groups:
While ideal grades can vary by a person’s taste, we recommend getting a colorless moissanite with D to F color grades, clarity grades that fall from FL to VS1, and has an Excellent or Very Good cut grade. With these desirable grades, you will be sure to have an exceptionally beautiful moissanite stone.

Moissanite gems typically vary in price only based on size and whether the stone is premium.
How do I know if my Gra certificate is real?
While people can fake certificates, they can’t fake the actual database’s information. Simply go to GIA Report Check and input the Report Number from the certificate to check for it’s authenticity.
While diamonds are graded on the 4 C’s scale (Cut, Clarity, Color, Carat), moissanites are graded solely on color. The cut and clarity grade is similar across different qualities of moissanites. At Brilliant Earth, we offer Premium and Super Premium moissanites. Premium moissanites are nearly colorless and can be compared to a G or H in color on the 4 C’s scale, and Super Premium moissanites are colorless, falling within the D-F range. A colorless diamond, whether natural or lab created, has a natural body color that contains no traces of yellow, brown, or grey, resulting in a dazzling, bright white appearance. Moissanite is a gemstone born from the stars. It was first discovered in 1893 by a French scientist named Henri Moissan, who later won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. He discovered microscopic particles of the gem that would eventually bear his name in Arizona, in a crater created by a meteorite that fell to Earth. He initially thought that he had discovered diamonds, but later determined that the crystals were composed of silicon carbide.Diamonds are the hardest known mineral and receive a 10 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness. Because of this exceptional score, diamonds are very durable and ideal for every day wear. This contributes to their popularity as engagement rings’ center gemstones.Moissanite, referred to as a diamond simulant, is engineered to give the illusion of similarity to diamonds, but is compositionally and visually quite different from a real diamond. The durability, brilliance, and color of the two gems are quite distinct. One common property of both diamonds and moissanites is that they are both very good thermal conductors.
Natural diamonds and lab created diamond prices vary based on shape, carat, cut, color, and clarity. Lab created diamonds are more affordable than natural diamonds.
A gorgeous way to find an engagement ring within your budget is to select a smaller center diamond and amplify its visual impact with a more detailed setting. Smaller accent diamonds are much more affordable than larger center diamonds, so surrounding your smaller center diamond with accent diamonds creates a dazzling look for less. One great option is a halo engagement ring, which features a center gemstone completely encircled by sparkling diamond accents that make the center gem appear larger. Another great option is a three stone setting, featuring one smaller gem on each side of the center diamond.
What is a Gra moissanite?
Gra Moissanite is a brand of lab-grown moissanite, which is a type of synthetic gemstone made from silicon carbide. Lab-grown moissanite is chemically, physically, and optically similar to natural moissanite, which is a rare mineral that was first discovered in a meteorite.
We go above and beyond the current industry standards to offer both Beyond Conflict Free ™ Diamonds that have been selected for their ethical and environmentally responsible origins, as well as lab created diamonds that are ethically grown with minimal environmental impact. Here again, the larger the moissanite, the more noticeable the color.A different type of brilliance is what makes it possible to distinguish a moissanite from a diamond. Diamonds reflect light in three different ways. The white light reflected back is referred to as brilliance, while the rainbow of colors refracted through the diamond is referred to as dispersion. The surface sparkle of a diamond, known as scintillation, is a third type of diamond light return. The combination of these three gives diamonds their famous sparkle.
Moissanites exhibit a different kind of brilliance than diamonds do, as their faceting pattern is different. The fiery, rainbow flashes emitted by moissanites are beloved by some, but others feel that moissanite’s heightened brilliance can create a “disco ball” effect, especially in sunlight. The bigger the moissanite, the more likely it is that the difference will be noticeable. Moissanite has a refractive index from 2.65 – 2.69, which is higher than a diamond.
Natural moissanite is incredibly rare, so moissanite available today is laboratory-created. After many years of trial and error, the particles Moissan discovered were successfully synthesized to produce what is now one of the world’s most scintillating gemstones.Lab diamonds are more affordable than their naturally mined diamond counterparts—typically you’ll save about 30% for a diamond of similar size and quality. Unlike moissanite, lab created diamonds have the same physical, chemical, and optical properties as mined diamonds. They exhibit the same properties of sparkle, fire, and scintillation. What’s more, they are an appealing option for those seeking an eco-friendly gemstone as they require no mining.A common thought when considering a moissanite is whether or not the gemstone will pair well with natural diamond accents. Moissanites look beautiful when set in rings featuring diamond accents. The image above features an oval moissanite set in a diamond accented three stone setting.Compared with natural gemstones, lab created moissanites have a smaller carbon footprint and result in less environmental impact. Fine jewelry made with moissanites and recycled metals is a responsible choice.
If you are considering a moissanite engagement ring, you’ll find dazzling options in our Moissanite Collection that can be set in your favorite Brilliant Earth engagement ring settings. If you’re attracted to the lower price point in comparison to diamonds but have concerns about the color or brilliance, you may want to consider other diamond options.I recently got my engagement ring from ForeverForLove on Etsy. I love my ring to bits, but a few days after I started wearing it I noticed the main stone appeared to have a very slight yellow tint under certain indoor lightings. I got a little concerned since it was supposed to be a DEF colorless stone. I messaged Amy about it, and she told me that it could be because the stone was dirty and suggested that I rinsed it with soap and water. She also said she would send me the GRA report for the stone.
Are moissanite rings worth it?
Artfully created in a laboratory, moissanite is an incredibly durable stone, made to last a lifetime and guaranteed to survive everyday wear. The customisation possibilities, paired with the very attractive price tag, makes moissanite an extremely enticing alternative to the traditional diamond engagement ring.
This error and the fact that she somehow got a certificate AFTER the ring was already shipped to me had me convinced that the certificate was just some random paper that you could buy or fake, and had nothing to do with certifying the quality of my stone. I did a bit more research and the more I read the worse it got. Apparently people have been receiving these GRA “certificates” with all kinds of spelling and grammatic errors, just like mine, and each card that came with the certificate had a different design. At this point it seems pretty clear that this is just something made up by Chinese vendors to make the moissanite appear more legit.Welcome to our community! It was highly unlikely that the stone was dirty, as I have been wearing the ring in shower every day since I received it, and any dirt would have been washed off by then. I did come back to this sub to look at all the DEF stones as well as some of the Instagram posts I saved, and I noticed that if you look closely enough, most DEF stones would still have the slightest tint of yellow under some indoor lights. I did some quick google research and it seems that it’s just a characteristic of moissanite. Although the technique of creating the stone has been improved a lot since it was first introduced to the world, the yellow tint is still there, although very miniscule.
I felt pretty reassured after reading what I’ve found. I don’t ever plan on selling my ring, so in the end it doesn’t really matter what grading the stone is as long as I love it, which I do wholeheartedly.
Is a Gra diamond real?
It is a synthetic gemstone that is often used as a diamond substitute, but is a gem in its own right.
I will also ask Amy about the missing hallmark stamps as being UK assay certified was promised on the listing. Will update here if anyone’s interested haha.I still love my ring and I don’t regret a bit about getting a moissanite. It is not a fake diamond, but a beautiful gemstone on its own. I just really don’t appreciate the dishonest vibe that the vendor is giving off. Like, if I knew I was just getting a ring made in China I would’ve just gone with a Chinese vendor for probably half the price or even less. If there’s not really a globally recognized certificate for moissanites, just tell me so. Oh and when I pointed out the error in the certificate, Amy’s reply was “haha hang on pls, that’s for another customer” Like, really? 🙄
Why is moissanite so cheap now?
Moissanite is cheaper than diamonds because it is created in a lab. Rather than going through countless hands and endless red tape, it is created on-demand in the exact quantity, quality, and location that the company requests. This is a tremendous cost-savings for jewellery shops and brands.
If you ever order from FFL and would like your ring to be hallmarked, just make it clear to Amy from the get go so you don’t experience the same headache of shipping your ring back!
This issue, combined with the missing standard UK hallmark stamps from their rings and the weird communication style they have, makes me wonder if ForeverForLove is just a Chinese vendor residing in London but selling everything that’s actually still made in China.

We build great products to solve your business problems. The truth is that moissanite is not a synthetic diamond or the often dreaded cubic zirconia, it’s a totally separate gemstone that is naturally occurring, though extremely rare and found in meteorites. Because of its beauty and durability, it’s one of the few gemstones that’s incredibly well suited to fine jewelry. However, it’s so tough to source natural stones that the vast majority of moissanite on the market is lab created.
Armed only with the naked eye, the best way to see the difference is to have a comparably sized diamond and to compare side-by-side. You’ll notice that moissanite and diamonds have different brilliance. Diamonds distinct sparkle is a unique combination of how it reflects light, the colors that refract through it, and the scintillation. Moissanite has more colors and fire, making quick flashes of rainbow color when moving the stone around. This disco ball effect can be more pronounced in sunlight.
Yes, moissanite looks very similar to a diamond. It’s near-colorless, has a similar refractive index to a diamond and the GIA deems moissanite the closest diamond imitation. Many jewelers consider moissanite a diamond alternative, not an imitation, though you will find plenty of that language on the internet.
Unless you’ve seen a lot of diamonds and just as much moissanite, you probably can’t tell the difference. Even to a trained eye, because natural diamonds come in an infinite amount of colors, clarities, and cuts, some diamonds just look like moissanite. And as moissanite quality gets better and better, they can easily be mistaken for diamonds. If you have other diamond jewelry, you might notice that moissanite looks a little bit different when side-by-side.Moissanite cannot be directly graded on the diamond color chart, however, natural moissanite is comparable to a GIA-certified K-color diamond. To the untrained, non-jeweler eye, differences in diamond color are not perceptible up until about this point. Meaning: unless you are a trained jeweler, you will not be able to tell the difference between a colorless or near colorless diamond, and you probably won’t see a difference even if a diamond has a faint yellow tinge. Natural moissanite has a faint yellow tinge. But the chance that you have the option of natural moissanite is exceedingly small.
Like a diamond, the larger the moissanite the more color you are able to see and the easier it is to differentiate it from a diamond. Because of this, some people prefer to stick to moissanite center stones that are under a certain carat weight. That being said, no one but a jeweler or experienced jewelry buyer would likely see a difference.
Which grade of moissanite is best?
While ideal grades can vary by a person’s taste, we recommend getting a colorless moissanite with D to F color grades, clarity grades that fall from FL to VS1, and has an Excellent or Very Good cut grade. With these desirable grades, you will be sure to have an exceptionally beautiful moissanite stone.
Just a few years ago, lab created moissanite or “classic” moissanite exhibited faint yellows, greens or gray colors. Most of the moissanite on the market today has been enhanced to be colorless or as close to colorless as possible. Some discerning jewelry enthusiasts (I’m talking people who have looked at dozens of diamonds and moissanite side-by-side) maybe still be able to detect a slight yellow or gray hue in moissanite under certain lighting, but it’s getting more difficult as the technology gets better. So you’ve recently discovered moissanite; the magical stone from meteorites that’s environmentally friendly, socially responsible, as beautiful as a diamond, but costs dramatically less.
A diamond tester is used to detect whether or not a stone is a real diamond by measuring how heat moves through it, but because moissanite heat conductivity is close to that of a diamond, it’s not a surefire bet. There are also diamond testers that measures electrical conductivity, but this will only tell you whether a stone is or is not a diamond, not necessarily what the stone is. Moissanite testers are specifically designed to identify moissanite by measuring how a stone conducts electricity.
It’s at this point that you scour the internet for proof that it’s too good to be true. You’ll sift through wedding forums where bride after bride claims no downsides, #noregrets, and that moissanite can and most definitely does pass for a diamond. So can moissanite pass for diamond? For the general public, your nosy but well meaning friends, and everyone you display your moissanite ring to between now and forever…they won’t know the difference. Most don’t even know moissanite exists and wouldn’t think to question it. It’s also generally frowned upon to probe about someone’s engagement ring, though it happens! So if you’re worried about it, or anticipate feeling anxious as someone coos about how sparkly your “diamond” is, you may want to have a canned response in your back pocket. May I recommend, “Thanks! I love it too.”

The debate between diamond vs. moissanite comes down to personal preference. These days, many couples are moving away from diamonds. Not only to save some cash but also because diamond alternatives can be more environmentally friendly and socially conscious.
This generation has seen the impact of blood diamonds and mining. While moissanite is far from the only option, I would highly encourage you to go for an ethically mined diamond or look at alternative engagement rings like peacock sapphire.
Moissanite is cheaper than diamonds because it is created in a lab. Rather than going through countless hands and endless red tape, it is created on-demand in the exact quantity, quality, and location that the company requests. This is a tremendous cost-savings for jewellery shops and brands. Can you tell moissanite from diamond under close examination? Yes, an expert would know the difference in the stone. The key difference between moissanite and diamond is that moissanite sparkles more. If you view it from the top, you will see two lines that indicate double refraction.
If you compare options like the 3 Claw Pear Cut Solitaire 0.50ct Moissanite Ring with the 3-Claw Solitaire Pear Cut 0.50ct Lab Grown Diamond Ring, you will see a difference in the price but it is not as dramatic. This is mainly due to supply and demand as well as the diamonds made of slightly harder materials.
Nope! This is a unique gemstone just like a ruby, sapphire, or emerald. It wasn’t thought up in a lab as a diamond imitation. The stone developed naturally, just like diamonds.
Skeptical about buying a lab-grown diamond or moissanite? Still not sure what you want? Keep on reading at What Even the Best Online Jewellery Stores Don’t Tell You When Buying Diamonds. After years of researching the gemstone, scientists discovered how to recreate moissanite. Today, it is possible to create an identical stone in the lab. Much like lab diamonds, there is a naturally occurring mined option and a manmade option. Since moissanite is so extraordinarily rare, nearly anything you find in your average jewellery store will be lab-grown.
Is moissanite a fake diamond?
The truth is that moissanite is not a synthetic diamond or the often dreaded cubic zirconia, it’s a totally separate gemstone that is naturally occurring, though extremely rare and found in meteorites. Because of its beauty and durability, it’s one of the few gemstones that’s incredibly well suited to fine jewelry.
Pro Tip: Want to know a dirty little secret? Affordable moissanite rings will look more like diamonds the longer that you wear them. Gemstones dull as they gather dirt and soap scum. While that can make diamonds look lustreless, it will tone down moissanite to create a diamond effect. That means that a ring pick like the Solitaire 3ct Emerald Cut Silver Moissanite Ring with a Moissanite Band will shine brighter than a diamond. If you want an affordable glamorous engagement ring, this is a fab choice. The answer is both yes and no. Moissanite was originally discovered in pieces of a meteorite that had crashed to earth. It occurs naturally in space and has arrived on earth in very small quantities. In fact, it is much rarer than diamonds. From birthstone engagement rings to coloured diamonds, there is a world of options out there. Forget about one-upping your neighbour or co-worker! Your mission is to find the style that you love.
Alright, ladies and gents, let’s talk about affordable moissanite rings! It’s one of the gemstones that we get the most questions about and it’s one of our most popular engagement ring stone picks. It’s also one of the most misunderstood options out there, and unfortunately there are a whole lot of cheap moissanite rings out there that aren’t up to par.
What is GRA certification?
GRA Moissanite Certification The Global Gemological Resesarch Association Institute (GRA) Is The Standard Of Excellence In Gemstones Services Worldwide,Since 1993. While the world has fallen in love with moissanite engagement rings, there are many misconceptions out there. Before you invest in any ring, whether it’s an inexpensive moissanite ring or a pricey diamond, it’s crucial to do your homework. The last thing that you want is a keepsake ring that loses its lustre after just a few years when you decide it wasn’t the right option for you. For a chic but modest ring, I love options like the 3 Claw Pear Cut Solitaire 0.80ct Moissanite Ring or 4 Claw Cushion Cut Solitaire 0.50ct Moissanite Ring. They are timeless and gorgeous options that you’ll love forever. If you want a ring that passes as a diamond, keep it simple and avoid gaudy cheap moissanite rings. Got the budget to buy a .25 or .5 carat diamond? Keep your moissanite under one carat as well. Going for celebrity-style bling isn’t convincing. When you see a woman carrying a “Birkin bag” on the bus, do you really think that she went into a shop and paid 100k for it? Probably not. And that’s totally okay! But if you want to convince people that you are rocking a diamond, keep it within a reasonable size and price range. Bear in mind that a bigger ring will also catch more light. That is great for creating a sparkling style, but it will be a giveaway for those who know gemstones well.By far and away the most popular question that I get is: Can you tell the difference between diamond and moissanite? The honest answer is that it depends on the ring. If you are talking about a ring like the 3 Claw Pear Cut Solitaire 1ct Moissanite Ring, I would say no.
