The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) has reported that African Americans suffer disproportionate rates of cirrhosis of the liver and other alcohol-related health problems. In light of such statistics, African-American community leaders and some health officials have concluded that targeting high-alcohol beverage ads at this segment of the population is unethical and socially irresponsible. Dogfish Head Brewery has sporadically produced a high-end bottle-conditioned forty called “Liquor de Malt”.The Clix brand is often credited as the first malt liquor made in the United States, granted a patent in 1948. The first widely successful malt liquor brand in America was Country Club, which was produced in the early 1950s by the M. K. Goetz Brewing Company in St. Joseph, Missouri.

The core market for malt liquor brewers in the United States in recent decades has been the Black and Hispanic populations. Brewers’ use of target marketing in advertising malt liquor primarily to young, inner-city, black males has been controversial, due to the drink’s higher alcohol content and the perceived vulnerability of the target audience. Brewers and advertisers have stated that they simply advertise to those who already buy their products. Critics have objected to the targeting of a segment of the population suffering disproportionately from alcohol-related disease and poor access to medical care.Alcohol percentages measured by weight translate into larger figures when re-expressed as alcohol percentages by volume, because ethanol is less dense than water.

The term “malt liquor” is documented in England in 1690 as a general term encompassing both beer and ale. The first mention of the term in North America appears in a patent issued by the Canadian government on July 6, 1842, to one G. Riley for “an improved method of brewing ale, beer, porter, and other maltliquors.”Malt liquor is a strong lager or ale in which sugar, corn or other adjuncts are added to the malted barley to boost the total amount of fermentable sugars in the wort. This gives a boost to the final alcohol concentration without creating a heavier or sweeter taste. Also, they are not heavily hopped, so they are not very bitter. Malt liquor is typically straw to pale amber in color. While traditional premium lager is made primarily from barley, water, and hops, malt liquors tend to make much greater use of inexpensive adjuncts such as corn, rice, or dextrose. Use of these adjuncts, along with the addition of special enzymes, results in a higher percentage of alcohol than an average beer. Higher alcohol versions, sometimes called “high-gravity” or just “HG”, may contain high levels of fusel alcohols, which gives off solvent- or fuel-like aromas and flavors. In order to highlight the potency of malt liquor, brand names have stressed powerful imagery such as Colt 45, Big Bear, and Power Master, and used slogans such as “It’s got more” or “The Real Power”. Power and sexual dominance have been common themes in advertising. Ads for Power Master were eventually banned in the United States due to regulations against advertising the strength of alcoholic beverages.”Malt Liquors” includes beer and shall be construed to mean any beverage obtained by the alcoholic fermentation of any infusion or decoction of barley, malt, hops or any other similar products, or any combination thereof, in water containing more than three and one fifth percent of alcohol by weight.

In Italy, beers with more than 14.5 Plato degrees fall into a distinct tax rate known as “Birra doppio malto”. Brewing companies often state this classification on the label. Therefore, the “doppio malto” indication nearly always identifies a beer that is the rough equivalent strength of a North American malt liquor.After the introduction of 40-ounce containers, which contain roughly five standard drinks, “40s” became a favorite high of many youth in inner-city areas.

Owing to inconsistencies in American alcoholic beverage regulations, which can vary from state to state, the term “malt liquor” lacks a stable definition. In some states, malt liquor refers to any alcoholic beverage made by fermenting grain and water; in these states a non-alcoholic beer may also be called a non-alcoholic or non-intoxicating malt liquor. In some states, products labeled “beer” must fall below a certain alcohol content, and beers that exceed the mark must be labeled as “malt liquor”. While ordinary beers in the United States average around 4-5% alcohol by volume, malt liquors typically range from 6% up to 9% alcohol by volume. A typical legal definition is Colorado’s Rev. Stat. ss. 12-47-103(19), which provides that:American-style malt liquors were made in Britain in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Some were American brands brewed under license, notably Colt 45; some were not. They were generally 5% ABV. They were heavily marketed but failed in the market.

At least for a brief period in the mid-1990s, some brands of malt liquor, including Olde English 800, Colt 45, and Mickey’s, were available in even larger, 64-ounce glass bottles. Forty-ounce bottles are not permitted in some US states, including Florida, where the largest container that a malt beverage may be sold at retail is 32 US fluid ounces (950 ml).

Here are some of the lowest-calorie beers available today – should you be counting the calories you’re drinking. In general, we strive to cover craft beers such as Lagunitas Daytime, Harpoon Rec League, and Session IPAs like Bell’s Lightheard Ale. That said, we can’t just turn a blind eye to the Busch Lights, Coors Lights, Heineken Lights, Miller Lites, Natural Lights and other Big Bev, popular American beers. You know, it’s just hard not to include those “easy drinking” pilsners (see Michelob Ultra) on a list like this given their popularity and low calorie count.

Dogfish Head’s Slightly Mighty is a well balanced lo-cal IPA that is brewed with monk fruit. According to Dogfish Head founder, Sam Calagione, Slightly Mighty has a, “muscular hop character”.

Anyway, here are some low calorie, low alcohol content alcoholic beverages that you should try, ranging from Anheuser-Busch to Samuel Adams. On occasion, we’ll even include the carbohydrates involved.

Moving beyond their Yuengling Light Lager is Yuengling Flight, a super-duper low-carb beer that only has 95 calories. It’s good to see the oldest brewery in the U.S. still innovating after brewing beer for well over a century outta Pennsylvania.

Don’t mind us, we try not to take things too seriously. What we do take seriously is trying to provide insight and info into where you can find certain types of beer styles, breweries, or in this case, low-cal beers. We’re big fans of low cal, low abv beer options on Football Sundays, as it helps get us from the 1pm kickoff to and through the Sunday Night game.You’ll notice that many of the beers below are light beers. That should come as no surprise, as there is no way to go low-cal without reducing some of the body of the beer.

We’ve had it and we can say that the advertising of Slightly Mighty seems to add up to our experience of the low-cal beer. At 30 on the IBU scale, it skipped over watery puddle and delivered on Sam’s hop character comment, if not quite muscular. And, with an ABV of 4%, it is/was quite sessionable, as most of the beers on this list are. We don’t know much about monk fruit, but it seems to add enough sweetness whilst keeping the beer fairly light-bodied and unsaturated. Released in 2018, Slightly Mighty is a year round offering from the Delaware brewery. A hazy gold brew with some tropical and citrus aromas, Slightly Mighty can be found on draft at bars and restaurants, sold in six pack and twelve pack format in beer stores, and, mixed into The Box That Goes BOOOOM!, a craft beer variety pack that Dogfish offers. It has zero carbs. And yet at 4% ABV, it still has alcohol in it. Is it mass produced? Yes. Will it be the best beer you’ve ever had? No. But once again, zero carbs.It’s unlikely that you’ll ever sit down to enjoy a flight of these beers. Just as unlikely would be finding a Triple IPA on this list, as they are notorious sugar bombs.

Puppers Beer is a fictional beer made real by first Stack Brewing of Ontario, and then Labatt Breweries. It is considered the Official Beer of Letterkenny, as enjoyed by characters on the hit TV show of the same name. Puppers Beer ranges in ABV from 4-5% depending on the brewer, but shares commonality as a light lager. Word on the street has Puppers Premium Golden Lager clocking in at ~120 calories.

Flight gives this long-standing American brewery two solid low-calorie beer options, even if their calorie count is different. Plus, it’s a clever play on words, which should resonate well with the general public.A 4.1% ABV is respectable for this premium organic low calorie beverage. Brewed with Calypso, Citra, and Simcoe hops, Slim Hazy enjoys a solid hop bouquet. As a Maine craft beer, you can rest assured that the brewing ingredients are first rate, since many Maine breweries utilize local Maine farms for most, if not all of their brewing supplies.As for this list of lo-cal beer options, it weighs in on the heavy side with 110 calories. But be honest with yourself, would you rather drink a 95 calorie Mic Ultra, or, add the extra 15 calories and enjoy a cold Bell’s Light Hearted? We’re going to assume your answer is the latter and say, right?!Night Shift head brewer, Joe Mashburn (can’t make this up), has this to say about Night Lite, a 4.3% ABV light lager brewed with flaked corn. Gotta love how well he handles the one negative review comparing Night Lite’s taste and aromatics to that of a root canal. The other 4 reviews that Joe reads are how we feel about the beer. It’s a much, much better beer than what Big Bev puts out in the same categories.

Rocking a thin beer can, is The Purist, and New Belgium by default, throwing some shade on Coors Light? We’ll never know. What we do know is that we’re happy to count it, along with it’s respectable alcohol content, among the best low-calorie beers in the market. Beers come in a wide variety of sizes and shapes. For example, in terms of package products you can order a large format bottle (750ml), a bomber (22oz), or a bottle or can of beer (both 12 oz). Here’s the recipe – the Cement Mixer shot is a mixture of Irish cream liqueur and lime juice. Sounds not bad, right? Well, the mixture of cream and lime juice causes the beverage to curdle… in your mouth. So while it goes in nice and smooth, it immediately gets chunky, thicc and curdled as soon as you shoot it. Total 21st birthday ritual.American Dietary Guidelines state that “one alcoholic beverage” contains 0.6 oz (17.7ml) of pure alcohol. It is not healthy to consume more than 3 to 4 oz of alcohol per day, per the recommendation of most Doctors everywhere. However, Irish doctors may prescribe 3-4 shots of Irish Whiskey before breakfast.Speaking of rituals, you can also drink certain types of shots with specific rituals. For example, salt and lime are two common ingredients with tequila. Lick the salt, shoot the tequila, then bite into the lime. Or, more interesting, sniff the salt, squeeze the lime in a friend’s beer, then throw the shot of tequila in the fireplace. A Pickleback is a fascinating concept to me. This is a shot of whiskey, followed by a shot of pickle juice. It’s a Midwestern thing.

Do you remember your first beer? I certainly don’t. But yes, you can certainly feel buzzed or even drunk off of one beer. Different cultures have different words for what state of being you enter when you drink: blasted, buzzed, trashed, pissed, buggered, stinko, blotto, hammered, etc…. and they all mean something a little different. My favorite of all of them is a term in Spanish. In Spain, you drink to achieve “La Chispa”, which translates to “The Spark”. It’s a state of low-level inebriation that loosens your shoulders, brightens your eyes, and makes conversation flow more easily. On the other side of the spectrum, there’s “Wasted”, a high-level of inebriation that makes you think it’s a good idea to see who can eat three Crunchwrap Supremes from Taco Bell the fastest.

So, how many beers equal a shot? The best rule of thumb is that one 12 oz (354ml) beer containing 5% ABV equals one shot of average hard liquor at 40% ABV. But just watch what beer you’re drinking, because a Hazy IPA from Stone Brewing, for example, can easily hit 10% ABV, so you’re looking at two shots right there. Or if you find yourself drinking a full pint of Black Tuesday 19.2% ABV from the Bruery (heaven forbid), you’re looking at nearly 4 shots of alcohol. At 7.5% ABV, it’s stronger than others on the list, but that doesn’t necessarily translate to tasting good. Ask any 40-drinker which name is the best, though, and someone will throw out Olde English. Expect a smooth and rich drink that’s got a dose of subtly fruity aroma. Is it the best beer ever brewed? No. Is it a great 40? Yes.The best budget whiskey brands are attractive not only because they don’t put a huge dent in our bank accounts, but they cover the entire spectrum of the stuff. Turns out, you can get some decent rye, bourbon, Canadian whisky, and more for $25 or less. These are excellent options for home consumption and do well enough to be enjoyed both neat or in something like a Manhattan.

Workhorses of the drinking world, forties offer not only a ton of alcohol for less than the price of a Frappuccino, but after making it through one, you’ll have a good buzz to boot. Sure, the quality of the booze may not be the best, but again, these are trying times and sacrifices must be made.The Mexican lager Sol dates back before Ice Cube penned the romantic lines, “Get your girl in the mood quicker, get your jimmy thicker with malt liquor.” Sure, Sol isn’t technically a malt but it’s a 40-ouncer so who GAF. Sol is also delicious for being an “approachable” beer (aka not complex). The golden lager is light but brings in a dash of heavier malt flavor. It’s refreshing and doesn’t have the acidity of a Corona, so pour some out for the homies and down the whole bottle.

Most beer experts agree if they’re going to drink any 40, it’s going to be a Mickey’s. Made by Miller Brewing Co., this malt liquor has 5.6% alcohol by volume and is crisp and generally light for malt liquor. Indeed it is a “fine” malt liquor as its bottle says, and the judges at the GABF and World Beer Cup agree, it’s a standout brew for being, well, a malt. But you have to drink it cold, otherwise, the corn heaviness is just too heavy. The overall taste is smooth and never bitter.Call it an understatement, but these are trying times. That being said, we need to find comfort where we can and one of the places that we can find comfort is in a forty-ounce bottle of booze.

Ah, Steel Reserve. Don’t let those fancy new “Alloy Series” beverages confuse you — they wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for Steel Reserve 211, the 8.1% behemoth that graces shelves across the country with its presence. Slightly sweet and malt-ish, Steel Reserve is a great all-around option when you need to pack a punch with as little cash as possible (as long as you’re okay not tasting any hops). Oh, and that 211? It has two meanings. First, it is allegedly the medieval symbol for steel. The second and less savory (though more entertaining) meaning is that 211 is the penal code for a robbery.

The 40 got a boost in 2017 when Forty Ounce Wines came out with rosé in a 40-ounce bottle. Avocado toast-eaters flipped their shit … perhaps because they were the ones drinking 40s in high school — I mean college — and now their bougie sensibilities and street-rat tendencies converged into one. But instead of the rosé, I recommend the Forty Ounce Muscadet from 2016 that is a legit Muscadet French white wine. (No, that doesn’t mean it’s a Moscato.) Fresh lime, white peach, lemon, and gardenia fill the nose and pallet with a blossoming mineral quality. Chill that shit and wrap a paper bag around it for a real 40-ounce style.Sweet and silky with a hint of lemon, a Colt 45 is not for hardcore IPA drinkers but those who enjoy a light Kolsch or Saison. Pick up a Colt 45 for your throwback evening (Edward 40 Hands anyone?) if you’re looking for a grainy and tart beer that doesn’t have a bold flavor. Colt 45 is one of the top two most popular malt liquors ever made — thanks, Afroman — and packs an ABV of 5.6%. The beer pours straw yellow with a white head, but honestly, there’s no use getting that fancy — just drink the damn thing.

With a name like King Cobra, you have to expect some sort of bite, but the only real bite you’ll sense is a sharpness on the nose that might be a turn-off. When it comes to the body, King Cobra is light on the hop characteristics (as well as everything else). It doesn’t even really feel like you’re drinking a 6% beer – which is probably for the best. With a logo that looks like a CFL team shield, it is also one of the nicer-looking bottles on the (bottom) shelf.
