I’ve been riding dirt bikes and quads for 15 years now, and the massive proliferation of side-by-sides in the last seven years has been disorienting. It used to be quad gangs and small packs of dirt bikes in SoCal OHV parks. Now, it’s chock-full of Polaris RZRs and similar kinds of vehicles. The proof is in the pudding: they’re nuts to drive and also very social compared to the solitary experience of bikes and quads. With a 225 horsepower 2.0-liter inline-four engine and a special Troy Lee Designs livery, this side-by-side is one of the fastest vehicles over varied terrain. Only 1,000 units will be sold worldwide, making it a little rarer than your average Polaris RZR. If you’re looking for the ultimate in four-wheeled off-road performance potential, it is not a Ford Raptor or Ram TRX. It’s one of these. This RZR Pro R Special Edition is largely like the standard, insane Pro R but with a livery from legendary designer Troy Lee Designs. It’s aggressively blue and orange, with even the suspension control arms painted the signature blue. Beadlock wheels trimmed in orange complete the Fanta-like effect.Equipment-wise, it is largely unchanged from the standard RZR Pro R. Thus, it has that high-strung 225 horsepower 2.0-liter naturally aspirated inline-four that revs to 8,500 rpm, which is incredibly stout in a road car, let alone a skeletal side-by-side. It doesn’t come with the higher-trim active suspension setup, but it still gets advanced dampers and a full Rockford Fosgate sound system. The Special Edition gets Pro Armor tires and a Rigid Industries light bar.

Side-by-sides are one of the phenomena of the last few years. They’re more accessible to most folks than quads and especially dirt bikes, you can bring the whole family along to justify some of the cost, and they’re also insanely capable on all kinds of trails. The Polaris RZR Pro R is the ultimate version of the side-by-side.The side-by-side market has a particular connection to the United States, as it represents the category’s strongest market. The Sport segment is growing rapidly, and when Honda made the decision to offer its own entry, it was natural that the groups tasked with that project would be the same U.S.-based teams that develop and manufacture most of the company’s side-by-sides and ATVs.

To lead the look of the Talon, Honda turned to its U.S. design team, but Senior Designer Erik Dunshee, who has 10 years with Honda. Although he’s based in the Torrance, California, studio, he points out that the process is international. “When we go after a project, we’re always working in consensus with Honda Powersports in Japan,” he says. “The majority of the legwork took place in the U.S., but it’s always a global effort.”
For production, Honda turns to the 650,000 square-foot facility at Honda South of Carolina (HSC). The engines and transmissions arrive from Japan, but the Timmonsville factory handles chassis production and vehicle assembly. The plant celebrated its 20th anniversary in July, shortly after reaching the milestone of three million ATVs produced in America, and Matt Joseph was hired when it opened in 1998. “It was an opportunity of a new company, a new culture, coming into the area,” recalls Matt, who describes himself as a “homegrown” South Carolinian. “It was a new opportunity for those, like myself, who took that journey. Honda is a Japanese company, so it offers a different culture, a different mindset.”It’s a decidedly Japanese tendency for someone who describes himself as a “homegrown” South Carolinian, but it’s representative of a key advantage for Honda; by leveraging its international knowhow and expertise, while relying on its capable U.S. footprint for development and production, the company is able to offer better four-wheel powersports products. The first Honda vehicle sold in America (1959) and the first Honda vehicle manufactured in America (1979) were both powersports products, and Honda has been expanding its powersports development, design and production in this country ever since. The Talon project is the work of the Marysville-based R&D group, the Torrance, California-based design group, and a manufacturing group stationed in Timmonsville, South Carolina.Drey Dircks is the Manager/Engineer and primary test driver, as well as one of the ex-Baja racers that McGuire referred to. Although he works out of the same Ohio office as McGuire, Dircks’s testing duties take him to various locations. “In the winter we go south and do some things in Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and we do a lot of testing in California,” he says, “but when the weather’s good, we do probably 90% of our testing here locally. We have our own test course and have a really good facility to do our testing that represents actual customer usage.”

Will there be a 2023 Honda Talon?
American Honda has unveiled the new “S” series for the 2023 Talon family. The “S” series is intended to satisfy the high demand for the sport side-by-sides by increasing inventory availability at Honda Powersports dealers nationwide.
Though founded and headquartered in Japan, Honda is a global company that has been leading the way in incorporating American facilities and employees into all aspects of vehicle design and production, through a family of United States-based operations. Honda was the first Japanese company to manufacture motorcycles in the U.S. (in 1979, with the CR250M Elsinore, in Marysville, Ohio), and the first Japanese auto company to manufacture cars in the U.S. (in 1982, with the Accord, also in Marysville).

Joseph was open to learning, developing, improving and being exposed to new ideas, which helped when he traveled to Japan to learn alongside his manufacturing counterparts there. “A lot of times you don’t realize the impacts of what you’re doing on a daily basis, but you have other folks around you who see you doing things differently, hear you speak in a different manner, or watch you plan in a different manner,” he explains. “My job is mainly about planning, so what it has done for me is that rather than waiting until the last minute to plan a big activity, typically I’m planning several months, or even years in advance.”
Before Honda enters a new vehicle in the market, the R&D division researches the market and then develops a vehicle, from concept goal to finished product. “The engine and transmission is still ultimately the responsibility of HGA [Honda Giken Asaka, or Honda Japan],” says Jeremy McGuire, the Chief Engineer of Development Planning in Marysville, who has worked for Honda since 1999. “They supply the engine and we develop everything else around it. The Ohio side is 100% responsible for the final Complete Build Unit. We’re responsible for the entire frame, body, plastics, electrical and suspension, with U.S. associates led by the project leaders within the respective function groups. Of course we have Japanese technical experts who are there also, but the development itself is largely led by U.S. staff. And then I would say close to 100% of our test drivers are local staff as well. We also have some guys who are former Baja 500 and 1000 motorcycle racers who are actually expert evaluators or handling-and-stability project leaders, so that also gives us some added value.”

With the introduction of this new version also comes a host of platform-wide advancements aimed at suspension performance, comfort, styling and more. All FOX Live Valve versions boast a new electric power steering unit, updated ignition mapping, full-coverage doors, new aluminum wheels, improved accessory integration and new colors. Of course, the hard-hitting features that customers have come to expect like the tough Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT) and i-4WD traction-aiding technology also return for the new model year. The Honda Talon 1000 FOX Live Valve family has never been more dynamic and capable than this. The Talon’s six-speed DCT offers two fully automatic modes: Drive and Sport. The former allows the engine to operate at a lower rpm, for relaxed driving or in situations where reducing load on the drivetrain results in smoother driving over rough terrain, and the latter holds gears longer, shifting up or down at higher rpm for more aggressive driving. Plus, a new low-range Sport mode has been added for 2023, enabling exciting and responsive power delivery under heavy loads. The low-range Sport mode complements the new Talon 1000R-4 version’s additional passenger capacity. Both four-seat versions of the Talon 1000 FOX Live Valve elevate the level of performance, refinement, comfort and quality, thanks to a “stadium seating layout that offsets the rear seats 50mm inboard and 75mm higher compared to the front seats, improving visibility and enabling a more engaged experience for rear passengers, while also situating them away from tire spray. The backs of the front seats slope so as to provide rear passengers with best-in-class legroom and knee space, and there’s a full-length rear grab bar that has an incorporated guard to protect fingers from being pinched by the rear of the front seat. Rear drink holders, an accessory power socket and inboard door handles are provided as well.

How fast does Honda Talon go?
Its strength lies in its corner-to-corner acceleration ability. It absolutely jumps out of the hole, often scrambling for traction until well past 60 mph. We longed for a taller tire or overall gear with the turbo kit installed, as the Talon rips right up to an indicated 76 mph and hits a speed-governed wall.
The Talon’s DCT has high oil flow to the clutch to minimize heat, and the dash has a clutch-temperature indicator. The Talon also has a sub-transmission that provides a full range, effectively doubling the number of gears.

The brake-pad compound was developed to achieve performance-level friction and feel, along with excellent wear life. Brake noise is minimized through the placement of rubber shims between the brake pads and calipers/pistons. The brake pedal has a trapezoid shape and a position that is 4.3 inches to the side of and 1.3 inches back from the accelerator pedal, for seamless transitioning between the foot controls.
New for 2023, all Talon FOX Live Valve versions feature full-coverage doors that improve cabin sealing. In addition to keeping the driver and passengers protected from tire spray and splashing mud, the new doors also offer additional storage space and integrated cupholders. Serving both style and function, the Talon lineup features bold new aluminum wheels fitted with tough Kenda tires to enhance puncture resistance.

The engine sound was carefully considered to deliver a satisfying driving experience; three resonators—each tuned for a different frequency—provide a strong, exciting air-intake sound, and a connector between the twin exhaust headers tunes the exhaust note for a rich tone.
On FOX Live Valve versions, the headlights are LED for long life and bright, uniform illumination, and they feature high and low beam. Door handles are inset for a tactile reference point, and the Talon comes standard with full side nets on all doors, with rigidly mounted latches to make securing them simple and quick, even with one hand. For a positive owner experience, the lids on the hood, bed cover, battery compartment and fuse box can all be opened without tools, simplifying checks and service. As the desire for adrenaline-inducing outdoor recreation continues to grow, so does the lineup of Honda Talon sport side-by-sides also. It’s no secret that the adventures of the trail are only amplified when shared with friends and family. The new Talon 1000R-4 FOX Live Valve completes the Talon lineup by combining the wide stance and long-travel suspension of the Talon 1000R FOX Live Valve with a spacious four-seat cabin previously only available in the 1000X configuration. The result is an advanced sport side-by-side capable of taming open, high-speed terrain and delivering unparalleled thrill to both driver and passengers. The i-4WD system has the added benefit of allowing electronic brakeforce distribution technology. When the driver applies the brake abruptly or in limited-traction conditions, the system automatically proportions brakeforce to the wheels with the most grip, reducing skidding. The wheels that can use more brakeforce get it, and the wheels without as much braking effectiveness receive less. Since the system works so quickly, it even automatically reproportions brakeforce as weight distribution changes during a stop. This is a considerable benefit given the changing traction dynamics of rough trails and differing loads, and it’s one that locking differentials don’t offer.

During acceleration, the Talon’s DCT provides the visceral and audible thrill of running through the gears with a sport-oriented feel and sound, no matter the selected mode. In addition, the Ignition Feedback Control system allows for quick torque reduction during shifting, for fast, precise gear changes. The Talon’s silhouette is low, and bulk is minimized. Efficient engine cooling is prioritized with motorcycle-inspired shrouds and four side vents, all of which are unique to the side-by-side world. The roof, which comes standard on all Talons, incorporates a front lip to keep moisture from reaching the interior (even when braking in rainy conditions), and a horizontal pass-through slit both creates a functional spoiler (providing downforce at higher speeds) and allows appropriate aerodynamics when the vehicle is towed on a trailer, whether it’s facing forward or backward.

To minimize reciprocating mass in the cylinder head, the engine employs an arrangement similar to that of the CRF450R motocrosser, with a Unicam valve-train configuration and four valves per cylinder. Roller-rocker arms have friction-reducing bearings where they contact their own cam lobes. Valve adjustment is via a shim-under-bucket arrangement.
The steering wheel is infinitely adjustable for tilt to suit driver preference. To further the Talon’s impressive handling and ride comfort, a new electric power-steering unit increases torque assist by 87 percent and features a return-to-center function that reduces steering effort and improves responsiveness. The modernized meter is located directly behind the steering wheel, and the large visor maximizes visibility and reduces glare. The dash also features a pre-wired switch panel, simplifying the integration of electric accessories. With conventional, open four-wheel drive, when one of the front wheels loses traction and starts spinning, the system limits power and torque to both front wheels—including the one that still does have traction. But with i-4WD, brake-traction control manages the amount of slip between the left and right front wheels, automatically detecting wheelspin and stopping it by applying brake pressure to the offending wheel. The torque-biasing, limited-slip front differential mechanically multiplies the brake force 3.92 times and delivers it as drive force to the wheel with more grip. The result is the optimized front-wheel traction of a locked front differential, with the added benefits of reduced steering effort, minimal kickback, better high-speed tracking and tighter turning radius compared to standard, open front differentials. Add in the Talon’s locking rear differential, and it’s the best of all worlds. In summary, i-4WD provides a much more relaxed driving experience—and of course there’s no need to stop and engage a locking differential.

What is the difference between a Honda Talon 1000X and a Honda Talon 1000R?
Main Differences Between the Honda Talon 1000X and 1000R With the 1000R, you get a wider offset in the front plus longer suspension travel. This makes it ideal for hitting the big bumps and taking on high-speed tracking. With the 1000X, you get closer front wheels and shorter suspension travel.
Bore-and-stroke specifications are an over-square 92.0mm x 75.2mm, and a “spiny sleeve cylinder has small protrusions on its outer surface, enhancing the adhesion between the steel sleeve and the aluminum barrel. This leads to improved cooling and a reduction in the bore distortion commonly caused by the dissimilar expansion rates of the two materials, so blow-by gas and oil consumption are minimized.

There’s also a Manual mode that gives the driver full control over the transmission, enabling him or her to change gears up or down via a pair of easily reachable, steering-column-mounted paddles, for heads-up driving. The long paddle shifters are easy to reach during dynamic steering maneuvers. Even when driving in either of the two automatic modes, the system can be overridden via the use of these paddles, with the transmission returning to automatic mode several seconds after each shift.
A number of protective parts are available as Honda Accessories, including a choice of aluminum or steel front and rear bumpers; steel nerf bars and rubber floor mats. The available rear A-arm guards, trailing-arm guards, frame and skid plates are all made in high-molecular-weight polyethylene, known for its high impact strength.

An armrest and grab handle are provided in the passenger door, and there’s a rattle-free “handlebar, complete with a quick-release adjustment lever that allows it to be easily telescoped in and out to accommodate varying physiques. There’s also a center footrest area for relaxed riding comfort, and floor drains simplify washing the vehicle. A 12V accessory adapter is standard, and even the cup holders are designed to securely hold containers of varying diameters and will accept most insulated tumblers. The bed is large enough to accept a large cooler, and six integrated tie-down points allow items to be secured for aggressive driving. A flag mount is incorporated into the rollover protection system.
Earlier this year, Honda introduced, a new “S series—manufactured to the same specification as the 2022 Talons—extending product availability for the popular sport side-by-side. Now, Honda reveals the updated 2023 Talon FOX Live Valve family—including the all-new Talon 1000R-4 FOX Live Valve. The entire FOX Live Valve lineup features additional advancements for an even more refined driving experience.

The system delivers exceptional ride quality with reduced lateral roll and longitudinal pitch—but with no need for a ride-compromising stabilizer bar, and improved tracking and steering response. Two suspension modes—Normal and Sport—are operated independently of the Talon’s selectable engine drive modes and have different characteristics. In Normal, the shocks stay subtler to absorb small irregularities, while in Sport the shocks ride higher in the travel to keep more stroke in reserve for big impacts. The “sting of deep whoop sections and g-outs is reduced, yet the ride is plush and smooth in uneven, rocky or rooted terrain.
The engine is mounted longitudinally in the frame, eliminating unnecessary right angles in the driveline so that an efficient transfer of power to the rear wheels is possible, resulting in strong acceleration. The Talon can be switched between two-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive on the fly—and even during situations of wheel spin—via a dash-mounted switch. As the name indicates, DCT uses two clutches that are controlled by sophisticated electronics and hydraulics. One clutch, which rides on a hollow outer shaft, controls odd-numbered gear sets (1, 3, 5); the other clutch rides on an inner shaft and controls even-numbered gear sets (2, 4, 6). Multiple gears are engaged simultaneously so that the transmission is constantly prepared for the next shift. Data, collected by a series of sensors, is processed by the ECU, which uses an advanced algorithm to determine when the shift-control motor should electronically trigger gear changes. At those moments, one clutch disengages and the other engages, resulting in shifts that are quick, smooth and seamless. A geared transmission that shifts automatically, DCT enables a direct, connected feeling between the foot pedal and the wheels, as well as an efficient transfer of power. It also boasts durability, flexibility, true engine braking and quick, smooth gear changes. To reduce engine vibration transmitted to the chassis, yet also withstand the rigors of spirited driving, the engine is attached to the frame using four rubber mounts. The driveshaft boots, traditionally components that are susceptible to damage in off-road driving, are well-protected on the Talon, as outboard guards provide maximum coverage, even during turning and through the full range of suspension travel, whereas inboard boots are positioned behind the suspension A-arms.

Is the Talon better than RZR?
The RZR XP Ultimate and the Honda Talon 1000R are both great options for those looking to buy a two-seat off-road vehicle. The RZR has an edge in horsepower, ground clearance, suspension travel, accessories, and technology out of the box. However, it comes at a higher price point than the Talon 1000R.
The FOX Live Valve Talons deliver quick automatic adjustment via a proprietary control system that can go through the shocks’ entire adjustment range in 20 milliseconds (less than one-fifth the blink of an eye!) and has a sample rate of 200 times per second, maximizing versatility by determining the best compression-damping setting for each shock based on vehicle conditions and behavior. The system constantly monitors variables including compression speed, steering, braking, throttle position, rpm, vehicle weight, selected gear, vehicle speed and vehicle orientation. Leveraging advanced algorithms and a sophisticated five-axis Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) offering ultra-fast communication speed through enhanced signal quality, the system electronically adjusts the individual shock absorbers accordingly. The two 1000R FOX Live Valve versions also feature double-wishbone front-suspension system, with 17.6 inches of front-wheel travel on the two-seater and 17.7 inches on the four-seater; at the rear, the multi-link suspension design limits toe change to only 0.3 degrees through the entire 20.1 inches of stroke, for excellent alignment control.

With the two four-seat versions of the Talon 1000 FOX Live Valve, a great deal of engineering went into integrating rear passengers in the riding experience. Considerations for rear ingress/egress include an opening that is wide enough even for passengers wearing bulky winter gear, and the elimination of sharp edges or protrusions that could snag clothing; grab points are provided.

Produced to 2022 model-year specifications, the Talon “S” lineup includes the configuration options offered last year, including the R and X two-seater versions (the former aimed at high-speed rough terrain, the latter excelling at nimble changes of direction), as well as an X four-seater. These three configurations are offered in both standard and FOX Live Valve trim levels, making for a total of six “S” series options, all of which tout comfort-focused enhancements that were applied for the 2022 model year.

Where are Honda Talons built?
South Carolina The Talon project is the work of the Marysville-based R&D group, the Torrance, California-based design group, and a manufacturing group stationed in Timmonsville, South Carolina.
Updates to the ignition mapping will smooth the transition from deceleration to acceleration, and the dual-clutch transmission’s Sport mode will also work in low range, helping with aggressive driving or when carrying loads. New full-coverage doors will provide better mud and water protection to the driver and passengers, and will incorporate convenient cup holders and storage pockets.

“In just five years since the Talon family’s introduction, Honda’s sport side-by-sides have grown increasingly popular with customers, resulting in impressive demand,” said Brandon Wilson, manager of Sports & Experiential, American Honda. “We recognize the importance of product availability, and we’re happy to address that goal with the Talon ‘S’ series, which presents a unique opportunity to get more vehicles to our eager customers. At the same time, we continue to refine the platform, and we’re excited to improve the Talons even more for the 2023 model year. The Talon family has always been about enjoying outdoor recreation with family and friends, and these moves should bring that experience to more customers.”

A new ground will also be added at the front of the vehicle to simplify wiring for accessory installation. New colors will be available for all versions as well. The 2023 Pioneer 1000 family has also updated colors for the new model year. Offering customers a wide range of options to best suit their needs, Honda’s flagship multipurpose side-by-side continues to offer workhorse ability and inspiring performance. The Pioneer 1000 Trail is equipped for fun two-track adventures, while the Pioneer 1000 Forest is outfitted for pursuing other outdoor interests such as hunting or fishing. The Pioneer 1000 Deluxe touts impressive versatility, and the Pioneer 1000 EPS is a great value-focused option. All four trim levels are offered in three-seat and five-seat configurations, the latter featuring Honda’s QuickFlip seating arrangement. (Extending customers’ Pioneer 1000 options even more is the 2023 Pioneer 1000-6 Deluxe Crew, a six-seat version introduced last August.)Non-FOX Live Valve versions will come with new Showa shocks with updated tuning to improve ride comfort and rebound control while maintaining resistance to bottoming. Wheelbase on the R versions will be reduced to allow a tighter turning radius and better maneuverability on tight trails, and a new electric power steering unit will offer better performance in all areas, while also adding a return-to-center function.American Honda has unveiled the new “S” series for the 2023 Talon family. The “S” series is intended to satisfy the high demand for the sport side-by-sides by increasing inventory availability at Honda Powersports dealers nationwide.

In the same announcement, Honda revealed that additional 2023 Talon sport side-by-side versions—more information will be released later this year—will feature significant updates aimed at improving comfort and convenience. Among the changes will be upgrades to suspension, styling, cabin comfort, accessory integration and more.Top speed of both machines is electronically controlled to top out at 74 MPH. In low range the speeds are 40 percent lower through all gears. Expect the aftermarket to tinker with this gear that is located on the front end of the main engine component and sits just below and behind the passenger seat. This housing has it own gear oil that gets changed separate from the engine oil. Huge automotive sized, balanced and phased drive shafts come from here and go fore and aft. Honda is working with several teams to get the Talon into racing at the Factory level. Expect to see them at a few races in 2019 and then with full commitment in 2020. The rest of us will able to take part in Honda’s lucrative contingency program R3/ Red Rider Rewards that includes race series from coast to coast and the R and X will be eligible. We will announce the details of that program as soon as they are official. You can sign up at HERE. The hype and excitement of Hondas recent Talon announcement has past. Prices are due to be set in January and will be 20K for the X and 21K for the R. The on sale date is still set for Spring. So far we have had only a small test drive that you can read about HERE. Now before we get substantial time behind the wheel for further testing and comparing, we did a little digging to find even more about the machine. Here are ten things we found that Honda Talon Specs don’t tell you.

Although Honda has not said if they will release a turbo model anytime soon, the piston oil jets inside the stock engine makes us think they are ready for it. This is a feature typically found on turbo charged power plants. The drivetrain is more than capable of handling double the stock claimed 104 horsepower. Both Talon’s use 15 inch wheels that are 6.5 inches wide in the front with a 50mm offset and 8 inches wide in the rear with a 33mm offset. The X wheels have a machined look while the Talon R has black wheels. They all have what Honda measures a 4/136 bolt pattern. We have checked with several wheel manufacturers which tell us, the 4/137 bolt pattern wheels they sell should work properly. Can-Am X3’s, Kawasaki Teryx’s use the 4/137 bolt pattern. Hondas Pioneer is listed as using a 4/136 also. The wheel stud holes on the stock Talon wheels are 14mm and the studs are 12mm.

Yamaha’s YXZ1000R paddle shifting SS model has a launch mode, the Honda does not. Launch Mode allows you to rev the engine and dump the clutch at full RPM in a drag racing or race start situation. On the Yamaha, it works with this sequence. 1 Put your left foot on the brake, 2 Grab both paddles at the same time, 3 push the gas peddle with your right foot on the gas and build the RPM’s above 8,000. 4 release the paddles, 5 Holeshot! It’s possible that the feature could be programed into the Talon later.
The Talon’s I-4WD system is basically a repurposed anti lock brake system. Every brake line is feed into a control manifold that sits between the the master cylinder and each wheel. Through a series of sensors the computer modulates brake pressure on certain corners to give the wheel with the most traction more power. However, unlike antilock brakes, you can’t feel this working while it is controlling fishtailing and wheel slip climbing over rocks. In 2WD, the system distributes brake force from tires that have a light contact patch to the ones with more traction. In the specs you can read that both engines are identical in each Talon but did you know the frames are too. Even though the rear suspension systems are completely different on each machine, the frames are in fact the same. The extra suspension pick up points in the rear are just left empty. So it’s conceivable, if you were interested in installing aftermarket suspension anyway, you could start with either machine and have the width of your choice. However, keep in mind the rear hubs and steering rack are major components that you may have to swap out depending on which width or style you wanted to go with. Those components are machine specific. The bulk of the Talon is actually made in the United States at Honda’s Timonsville South Carolina assembly plant. Parts like plastics, electrical and suspension are sourced from vendors around the U.S. and elsewhere but the frame, front and rear differentials are made in house. The Engine and DCT come from Honda in Japan. The Talon features two inch ROPS tubing. So, in addition to Hondas own accessory line up, there will be a host of accessories from companies like Assault and Super ATV ready and available for the new Talon.

We like the size and style of the Talon seats. However, only the driver’s side is adjustable. On the good side, we can say it’s the best sliding seat roller system we have used in a SXS. We have not tested it dirty though. The seats are not meant to be swapped side to side. The driver’s side actually sits on a frame raising it up to the height of the passenger side which is dictated by the fuel tank.

You will definitely notice the difference in rough terrain and washboards with the Talon. Polaris continues to win the horsepower game. I believe they have plenty of room in the category with the new ProStar engine. They should be able to keep this status for many years to come. That said, the Talon will have the same issues with width restrictions in some states. We experienced this firsthand in Wisconsin. At Wisconsin’s 65-inch width restriction, you won’t be able to ride it there along with a few other states. It’s ultimately up to you as a buyer which one best fits your needs and budget. We know you won’t be disappointed with either model, whichever option you choose!

The Talon comes with 28 x 9 x 15 up front and 28 x 11 x 15 in the rear. They don’t say what brand, but they defiantly don’t look as aggressive as other brands.

Jackson Racing is a company with a lot of history, and specifically a lot of history with Honda. Jackson Racing started modifying Honda cars and bikes in the 1970s and have gone on to win races and championships in multiple racing disciplines from SCORE Off Road to Ice Racing, SCCA and World Rally. The Talon is a great braker, which allows you to really throw it deep into a corner and set the front end. With the extra power, the car weight transfers a little better, pivoting on the outside tire under throttle. Whether you roll on the throttle or mash it, the engine comes to life with no hesitation and no hiccups. It is all power, all the time, and it ramps up in a hurry, allowing you to lighten the front end or wheelie over crests if you keep your foot in it.We came away incredibly impressed with the Jackson Racing turbo kit. While a turbo kit is a large investment for most UTV owners, this is one that we can wholly recommend, as it transforms the driving experience of the Talon and is designed with long-term durability in mind. While Honda does not sanction the turbo kit installation officially, the end product you get is on par with OEM parts. Check with your local Honda dealership to see if they are a Jackson Racing dealer, and for some great information on the turbo kit, click here.Aside from the Jackson Racing Turbo decals, this car is stealth. The giant air-to-air intercooler and fan assembly are tucked neatly under the bed, so far up that you can’t see it unless you duck under a fender. The turbo manifold mounting rod is about the only piece of the kit that doesn’t look like an OEM piece, only because it’s a billet rod finished in a slick black anodizing. Turn the key, and this Talon purrs to life like a stock car. Heck, at low speeds, it feels identical to a factory car.

Occasionally, we get to drive a car that we just cannot pry ourselves out of. That bug struck particularly hard during our noticeably short stint with this 2021 Honda Talon R Live Valve complete with a Jackson Racing turbo kit. We took delivery of the car with only its break-in miles on the odometer, the whole thing smelling like fresh rubber and showroom shine.Compare all Honda Talon 1000 Sport side-by-side models available to order from Western Honda in Scottsdale, Arizona, near Phoenix.
