Oak Island is made up of a temperate broadleaf and mixed forest, known regionally as the New England/Acadian forests. Wildlife in the Mahone Bay area includes great blue herons, black guillemots, osprey, Leach’s storm petrels, and razorbills. Non-specific eagles and puffins are also mentioned. The roseate tern is considered an endangered species in the area and is protected by the Canadian government. Efforts to restore their habitat, such as curbing the population of other bird species, have been undertaken.There are reports from the History Channel program The Curse of Oak Island that, if correct, would indicate an extensive European history not presently recorded elsewhere. These non peer-reviewed reports include a Portuguese style cobble road, carbon dating indicating European activity as early as the 12th Century, and European and Middle-eastern DNA purportedly extracted from two bones recovered from drilling operations at approximately 90 feet (27 m) below ground.Oak Island has been a subject for treasure hunters ever since the late 1700s, with rumours that Captain Kidd’s treasure was buried there. While there is little evidence to support what went on during the early excavations, stories began to be published and documented as early as 1856. Since that time there have been many theories that extend beyond that of Captain Kidd which include stories of religious artifacts, manuscripts, and Marie Antoinette’s jewels. The “treasure” has also been prone to criticism by those who have dismissed search areas as natural phenomena.The first major group of settlers arrived in the Chester area from Massachusetts in 1761, and Oak Island was officially surveyed and divided into 32 four-acre lots in the following year. A large part of the island was owned at the time by the Monro, Lynch, Seacombe, and Young families who had been granted the land in 1759. In the early days of British settlement, the island was known locally as “Smith’s Island,” after an early settler of the area named Edward Smith. Cartographer Joseph Frederick Wallet DesBarres renamed the island “Gloucester Isle” in 1778. Shortly thereafter, the locally used name “Oak Island” was officially adopted for the Island. Early residents included Edward Smith in the 1760s and Anthony Vaughn Sr. in the early 1770s. In 1784, the government made additional land grants, this time to former soldiers, which included parts of Oak Island. It was not until July 6, 1818, that the original lot owners’ names were mapped for the Nova Scotia Crown Lands office. Oak Island has been intermittently owned by treasure hunters ever since old legends were first published in 1857. The hunt for treasure got so extensive that in 1965 a causeway was built from the western end of the island to Crandall’s Point on the mainland, two hundred metres away in order to bring heavy machinery onto the island. There are two types of bedrock that lie under Oak Island; the southeastern portion consists of “Mississippian Windsor Group limestone” and gypsum, and the northwestern part is Cambro-Ordovician Halifax Formation slate. Oak Island and the area that is now Mahone Bay was once a lagoon 8,000 years BP, before the sea level rose with the melting glaciers. Dr. Ian Spooner of Acadia University has stated that the current triangular swamp on Oak Island was once a cove. Analysis done of core samples taken from the swamp show that a “significant saltwater intrusion” occurred as recently as the late 1300s or early 1400s. While Spooner said that this was likely from “human manipulation”, he did not rule out the possibility of an enormous storm. The first known indigenous people in Nova Scotia are the Mi’kmaq, who have lived in present-day Nova Scotia and Newfoundland for several thousand years. The area that encompasses Oak Island was once known as the “Segepenegatig” region. While it is unknown when Europeans first encountered Oak Island, the earliest confirmed European residents date back to the 1750s when French fishermen built a few houses on the future site of the nearby village of Chester. Following the Expulsion of the Acadians during the Seven Years’ War, the British authorities encouraged British colonists from New England to settle in Nova Scotia. Land was made available to settlers in 1759 through the Shorham grant, and Chester was officially founded that same year.

Oak Island is populated on a seasonal basis with two permanent homes and two cottages being occupied part-time. While the island remains private property, public access is granted to those who schedule tours ahead of time.The majority of Nova Scotia is a humid continental climate with hot and humid summers, and cold or frigid winters. While there is no weather station on the island or along Mahone Bay, there is one towards the west in the town of Bridgewater. The average annual temperature given in Bridgewater is 7.1 °C (44.8 °F), while the precipitation runs at 1,536.7 millimetres (60.50 in). The island and surrounding coasts can be hidden in fog for as many as 90 days a year. These coasts are also vulnerable to powerful storms which include nor’easters and hurricanes.

The geology of Oak Island was first mapped in 1924 by J. W. Goldthwait of the Geological Survey of Canada, who interpreted the island as a composite of four drumlins. These drumlins are “elongated hills” which consist of multiple layers of till resting on bedrock and are from different phases of glacial advance that span the past 75,000 years. The layers on top of the bedrock are mainly made up of “Lawrencetown” and slate till. The former of these two is considered a type of clay till which is made up of 50% sand, 30% silt, and 20% clay. In the main area that has been searched for treasure along with the till lie bits of anhydrite which become more competent deeper down. Researchers Les MacPhie, and John Wonnacott concluded that the deep deposits at the east end of the Island make up the drumlin formations.There is also a formation of boulders called “Nolan’s Cross”, named after a former treasure hunter, and a triangle-shaped swamp. Lastly, there has been activity on a beach at a place called “Smith’s Cove”. Various objects including non-native coconut fibre have been found there. More recent archaeological discoveries in the Smith’s Cove area have included an allegedly pre-15th-century lead cross and various wooden earthworks.

The most recent owners include a treasure hunter named Dan Blankenship, who initially partnered with “Oak Island Tours Inc.,” run by David Tobias. Oak Island Tours eventually dissolved, and in February 2019 it was announced that a new partnership had been formed with a company called the “Michigan Group”. This group consisted of brothers Rick and Marty Lagina, Craig Tester, and Alan Kostrzewa who had been purchasing lots from Tobias. Blankenship owned the island with the Michigan Group until his death on March 17, 2019, at the age of 95.

Visitors can rent equipment on the island, so there’s no need to travel with gear in order to experience the area’s amazing paddling opportunities. The town government operates under a Council-Manager type system where various officials have authority to make decisions on services, revenues and expenditures in accordance with a state issued charter. The council is Oak Island’s governing body and consists of five Commissioners and the Mayor. It sets the Town’s policy, enacts ordinances and adopts the annual budget. The actual operation of the town’s government is accomplished by the Town Manager who is hired by the council. Town Hall is collocated in the center of the island with the Oak Island Police Department, while units of the Oak Island Fire Department and Brunswick County EMS are deployed in various areas of the Town to respond to emergencies As of 2017, the Census Bureau estimated 7,789 people lived in the town, roughly a 14% increase from 2010. The town’s racial makeup was 97% White, 0.4% African American, 0.4% Native American, 2% Hispanic or Latino and 0.2% from two or more races. There were 3,605 households with the average size 2.05 persons. As for household income, the Census Bureau’s 2017 estimate was $57,670, with the per capita income being $38,176. About 8.6% of the population were below the poverty line. That same year, the town’s estimated population by age is as shown in the chart below. The ratio of women to men is 52.3% to 47.7%.

Oak Island, on which much of the town sits, has been inhabited since the early 19th century when Fort Caswell was constructed on its east end in 1838. The island developed slowly, but by the late 1930s it began attracting people from nearby Southport with fox hunting popular in the areas along the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW). In 1954, Hurricane Hazel struck, leaving only five buildings standing on the west end of the island The island recovered quickly however, and the towns of Long Beach and Yaupon Beach were incorporated in the late 1990s Along with this increasing level of development came strident demands for a reliable crossing of the ICW to provide access to the island.Tropical storms are a continuing source of concern with Hurricane Hazel being the most devastating. In the 1996-1999 period, four major hurricanes (Bertha, Fran, Bonnie, and Floyd) made landfall with Hurricane Floyd having significant effect on the town. More recently, in October 2016, the eye of Hurricane Matthew passed almost directly over the town inflicting extensive damage to the dune system, and in September 2018, Hurricane Florence caused severe flooding and wind damage in addition to washing away large amounts of beach sand.

When the ICW was completed in the late 1930s, a swingbridge initially provided this service. Destroyed by a barge strike in 1971, construction of the high rise Barbee Bridge began almost immediately; it opened for traffic in 1975 (interim service included a ferry and pontoon bridge). A second high rise structure, the Swain’s Cut Bridge, was built over the ICW to the island in 2010. In 1999, Long Beach and Yaupon Beach, decided to consolidate into the Town of Oak Island, and while Caswell Beach considered the matter, it opted to stay independent. Immediately after the new town got up and running, it began to either incorporate or obtain Extra Territorial Jurisdiction (ETJ) on properties located to its north on the mainland.On the island there is a contract post office, a branch of the county library, Publix and Food Lion Supermarkets, an ABC Liquor Store, a few gas stations, numerous small professional offices/retail stores, and a large number of restaurants. Primarily a family beach type locale, the island also provides many other types of recreational activity. The Oak Island Golf Club course and its related practice facilities are open to the public and an outdoor swimming pool is available for its members’ use during the summer. Two public fishing piers jut out into the Atlantic Ocean while motor/sail boats moored to piers dot the ICW as well as the Davis Canal and Montgomery Slough. South Harbour Village has a nine-hole public golf course and a marina on the ICW with 1,000 linear feet of alongside dockage. All these waterways also attract a large number of kayakers. The Oak Island Recreation Center located mid-island provides both indoor and outdoor exercise facilities and rents out sports equipment and amenities like balloon tire, beach wheelchairs. Popular sporting events include the “Run Oak Island” Marathon held in February which also features a half-marathon along with a 5K and one mile run. And then in April, the Southport/Oak Island Chamber of Commerce sponsors the Oak Island Lighthouse Run which includes a half marathon, 10K, 5K and a one-mile fun run. As for other activities, the town puts on an ocean front fireworks display as part of its Fourth of July festivities, and a parade down Oak Island Drive just before Christmas, while the Oak Island Library hosts a wide variety of events to include “Socrates Cafe” and “Meet the Author” programs. • Land mostly west of Middleton Blvd. (NC 906) either planned for or under development, the largest of which was the ill-fated Seawatch complex (1738 of the planned 4171 lots are in Oak Island). Summers in the town are hot and humid with an average temperature of 85˚, although the beach front is cooled much of the time by sea breezes (the prevailing winds are from the southwest). Ocean water temperatures range from the 50s in winter to the mid 80s in summer. Winters are moderate with an average temperature in the 50s (°F), albeit with brief cold periods. Rain occurs throughout the year with average annual rainfall approximately 57″, 45% of this falling between June and September.

In the early morning hours of August 4, 2020, Hurricane Isaias hit Oak Island as a Category 1 hurricane; the storm surge was around 9 feet, increased by a corresponding high tide. The fishing pier and its hotel, many businesses, and hundreds of homes were damaged, and in many places sand from shoreside dunes was pushed inland for 3 blocks. An estimated 75-100 vehicles were damaged; floating cars were a common site at the height of the storm. Power was finally cut off as a safety precaution. In the succeeding weeks, a mandatory evacuation order and damage to rental properties prevented tourism, which is a major source of income for many residents.

I had the Birthday Cake the first time and the Cookies and Cream the second time. They have quite a few flavors for a small little spot (see my photo of the flavor board). My husband had black cherry and really liked that as well. It’s in a cute little spot right next to the pier so you can walk along the water and enjoy your ice cream or just sit on the front porch rocking chairs. We’ll definitely be back when we visit Southport again!

Fort Louisbourg was a Nova Scotian French fort which was surrendered to the British after a siege in the mid 18 Century. The Money Pit on Oak Island is said to be French and naval in style, therefore certain researchers have argued it contains monies from the fort, smuggled out before it fell to the British.As the Lagina Brothers continue their search to uncover the 220 year old mystery of what lies beneath Oak Island, Nova Scotia, in the new series of The Curse of Oak Island, we propose the 12 most convincing theories.One theory suggests the Money Pit is actually a Viking ship, sucked in by the quicksand like surfaces on Oak Island and turned vertically during the sinking process. The wooden planks separated at regular intervals in the pit would then be explained as back rests for the rowers.

At least one sinkhole has been uncovered on Oak Island as well as many others on the nearby mainland. The soft ground in a sinkhole would give the impression that it had been dug up before.

Some have argued the symbols on the stone uncovered from the Money Pit were similar to the Coptic alphabet and when translated spoke of strict Christian religious practices. This has led to the theory that Coptic Christians from Egypt came to Oak Island and constructed the pit.It is suggested that Oak Island was once a tar-making location as part of the the British Naval stores industry. Author Joy Steele writes a convincing argument that the tar-making kilns of the time look a lot like the Oak Island Money Pit.

Religious military order known as the Knights Templar amassed a great treasure said to contain the Holy Grail and the Ark of the Covenant. With Templar symbolism discovered on the island, including a Christian cross formation of rocks, there are some that believe Oak Island became the final resting place of the Templar treasure.

The most popular theory claims Oak Island holds the buried treasure of a 17 Century pirate named Captain Kidd. According to local legend, a dying sailor on Kidd’s crew claimed that £2 million worth of treasure was buried on the island. Treasure hunters in the 19 Century uncovered a large stone from the fabled Money Pit containing symbolic inscriptions said to read,“Forty feet below, two million pounds lie buried.”Some people have suggested Sir Francis Bacon, a 16 Century author, was actually the man behind the works of Shakespeare. Evidence from a piece of parchment paper uncovered from within the Money Pit has given rise to the theory that Bacon’s original manuscripts lie under Oak Island.In 1762, British forces besieged and captured the Cuban city of Havana, discovering a large sum of money in the process. With a naval base in Halifax, Nova Scotia, it’s been claimed the British buried their imperial treasures on nearby Oak Island to prevent them falling into the hands of American revolutionaries.

The discovery of Masonic markings, symbols and artefacts from around and within the Money Pit have given rise to the theory that it is in fact a Masonic secret vault, created by the Freemasons.During the French Revolution of the 1700s, it is said Marie Antoinette instructed her lady-in-waiting to take her jewels and flee. Most of those jewels have been missing ever since. Some believe the maid fled to Nova Scotia with the help of her royal connections, and aided by the French Navy, constructed the Money Pit as an elaborate vault to house the jewels.

In addition to regular and recurring cast members, there have been several visits by people who have a significant and sometimes intimate association with Oak Island.The Curse of Oak Island is a multi-season reality television series that chronicles an eclectic team of treasure hunters and their search for legendary treasure on Oak Island, off the shore of Nova Scotia, Canada. It is an American television production that premiered on the History network on January 6, 2014. The show features what is known as the Oak Island mystery, showing efforts to search for historical artifacts and treasure.The Lagina brothers became fascinated with the island after reading the January 1965 issue of Reader’s Digest magazine that features an article on the Restall family’s work to investigate the so-called “money pit”. Marty and Rick obtained a controlling interest in Oak Island Tours, which reportedly owns most of the island. The brothers were later approached by Prometheus Entertainment to do a reality show. Rick and Marty have engaged the assistance of father-and-son Dan and Dave Blankenship, permanent residents of the island who have likewise been searching for treasure since the 1960s. Dan Blankenship died on March 17, 2019, at age 95.The series explores various Oak Island theories and conjectures through conversations with independent researchers. Persons featured have included Zena Halpern discussing her theory about North African gold and sharing copies of a French map of the island that she claims is dated to 1347, J. Hutton Pulitzer discussing his theory of ancient mariner visitations, Petter Amundsen discussing his theory about codes hidden in Shakespearean literature and a secret project involving Sir Francis Bacon and the Rosicrucians, Daniel Ronnstam discussing his theory about the 90-foot stone being a dual cypher containing instructions on how to defeat the money pit flood tunnels with corn, authors Kathleen McGowen and Alen Butler discussing their theory involving the fabled Knights Templar treasure and an alleged relocation of historical religious artifacts to the island, and John O’Brien discussing his theory that the island contains treasures of the Aztec Empire. It has also been suggested by Zena Halpern, without evidence, that the Templars worshipped the Phoenician goddess Tanit.

A number of individuals have made recurring appearances, usually when their expertise is called upon in association with the treasure hunt. They may appear many times in one season and then far more infrequently in other seasons or not at all, depending on what is required during the ongoing search.
