This puzzle started with ALCOHOL FREE BEER down the middle, but that quite rightly was poured away and replaced by EVEREST BASE CAMP, which has slightly friendlier letters. The juxtaposition of TIME TRAVEL and SPACE OPERA is quite nice, and I’m already planning a “Donnie Darko” / “Source Code” doubleheader.Even so, this was a really nice puzzle to solve, with just enough of a tug of war between me and the grid to keep things interesting. That makes no sense until we take out the trash — in this case SCRAPS — and figure out that if you are a “riot,” you are also a HOOT. I tell you this not because I haven’t fully recovered from those early days of motherhood but because it tangentially has to do with this puzzle by Daniel Bodily and Jeff Chen. There are many things that need to be put away, rearranged or disposed of.

Fun fact about me: I love the game Go, although I am not very good at it because I don’t play very often. The ATARI company is named for a situation in a game of Go when a player is surrounded by the opponent with only one liberty, or way out. Read more about the state of being “in atari.” We called the game “Does This Belong Here?,” and the goal — as they viewed it — was to clean up their rooms before the woman who looked like their mom but had Jack Nicholson in “The Shining” eyes went to pour herself a drink from the juice bottles that their dad hid in the closet.53D. A very tasty clue. The jalapeño has a TILDE, which the habanero lacks. UPDATE: There are some questions in the comments about whether “habanero” is spelled with a tilde. According to the Wordplay research and emu care department, it is spelled without a tilde, but can be added as a “hyperforeignism.”
14A. “Astronomical news” can mean a huge event, but in this puzzle it refers to the PBS show “NOVA.” UPDATE: Interpretation of clues is always subjective, but I confused myself when I read the clue. An astronomical event in which a “new” star is born is a nova. I took the word “news” to be wordplay, as in the plural of something new (don’t judge, it’s been known to happen in a late week puzzle). Since the word nova is singular, and the plurals didn’t match, I discarded it as a possible interpretation.At 18A, the answer to the clue “Secure” is — as you must write it — LITTLE ROCK. Now, I’ve been to Little Rock, Ark., and it’s a lovely place, but it’s not clear what that has to do with being “secure.” However, if we look at the circled squares, they spell LITTER — hey, that’s trash! Let’s take it out, or remove those letters from the answer. What we wind up with, after removing the letters LITTER, is LOCK, which is a synonym for “Secure.” 3D. I’m not sure why I find this so fascinating, but OVERLOOKS has been an entry in the New York Times Crossword only once, in 1959. The singular “overlook” has also only been in the Crossword once, in 2020. 34D. How much have we been trained to think of the word “site” as a website? Think again. The “Popular site for holiday gift orders” in this puzzle is SANTA’S LAP.
Daniel Bodily: My wife and I have three kids and have settled in Minnesota, where I work as an R&D robotics engineer for 3M. In general, I enjoy all things math/software-related and find crossword construction to be a thrilling application domain in which to toy with ideas and algorithms. Outside of crosswords, I enjoy dabbling on the piano, playing basketball at my church weekly and chasing my kids around the house as “the monster.” THURSDAY PUZZLE — When my children were younger, my way of communicating to them that they had pushed past my limit and needed to tidy their living areas evolved, over time, into a game. It tells you what to do before the answers to the starred clues will make sense. So let’s play “Does This Belong Here?,” take out the trash and see what happens.
