When not teaching, blogging, or tweeting, more often than not you can find Kayla reading a fabulous book or walking around Manhattan listening to a podcast while sipping an iced soy vanilla latte.

She accidentally landed her first marketing position back in 2013 thanks to a tweet she sent out. That tweet got her noticed by a then small start-up that was hiring a Social Media Manager. As they say, the rest is history. Since then Kayla has worked in the marketing world focusing on social media content creation and strategy for small businesses. She completed a master’s degree in social media and mobile marketing from the Lubin School of Business.

In addition to her passion for all things social media, Kayla is also a blogger, yoga teacher and fitness instructor. Her blog, Kayla in the City, has been featured in Teen Vogue.I’m a total podcast junkie. On those super blah days, I try to take an extra long walk while listening to a motivating podcast (a current favorite for entrepreneurs is Being Boss!) and it usually gets the creative juices flowing. I graduated college with a BFA in theater but fell in love with fitness while I was in college. Because of that I decided to become a personal trainer and started my blog Kayla in the City. She’s navigated her way through a variety of small jobs and exploring her interests in order to start creating a life on her terms, which I know so many of you desire to do.Just do it. I’m glad I approached my Holistic Happening co-founder about making our first event happen like legit right after I had the idea. I didn’t give myself a chance to chicken out and think it was a dumb idea.Hi Guys! I’m KaylaKleinman — I’m the co-founder of Holistic Happening, a NYC-based company creating interactive wellness events. I’m also a fitness blogger over at Kayla in the City and grad school student studying Social Media Marketing (yes that’s a thing you can get a Master’s degree in!)I’ve become a believer that everything happens for a reason. I’m grateful for the jobs that have rejected me and the jobs that have fired me because I know it happened so something better could come along.Right now our biggest struggle is also getting the word out. I’m learning you gotta be loud and proud and promote the cool things you’re doing every opportunity you have.

This interview is part of the Chasing Dreams interview series. I’ve interviewed a variety of entrepreneurs and small business owners who have chosen a different path in life in order to go after his or her dream career. Have an entrepreneur in mind you’d like to learn more about? Let me know!
That I’m super outgoing, ha! While I’m fairly bubbly and sassy online, I’m also super awkward in most social situations and joke that people are probably really disappointed when they meet me.I was then recruited by a start-up thanks to my blog and twitter account and totally fell in love with marketing because it combined my creative background with the more analytical part of my brain.

After our events, I’m always this beautiful mix of exhausted and exhilarated and I come home with this wild smile on my face. It’s addicting and after our first event, I knew I needed to feel that feeling again soon.

But I’ll be honest- I’m not here for the people chasing vanity metrics. My philosophy is grounded in 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲-𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 and what I’ve dubbed #SEOwithSoul. I don’t believe in hacks and “beating algorithms” as a long term strategy.
From there I worked in marketing at various start-ups in the wellness industry. Last year at this time I thought I had my dream job as the marketing lead at a small fitness fashion company, but I didn’t feel 100% satisfied. I really, really, really wanted to be my own boss and craved the excitement of starting my own business.

I work with passionate business owners and marketing directors who are 𝘁𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗿𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗼 𝗔𝗹𝗹 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 and spreading their efforts too thin. They want to know what’s working, what’s not working, and where they should really be spending their time and money.
I’m insanely inspired by other bloggers and solopreneurs who are making shit happen. It’s scary to strive for a non-traditional career path — people thought I was crazy to go to school for theater and now people think I’m crazy that I don’t want a 9-5 job.

But I’ll be honest- I’m not here for the people chasing vanity metrics. My philosophy is grounded in people-first marketing and what I’ve dubbed #SEOwithSoul. I don’t believe in hacks and “beating algorithms” as a long term strategy.
Yes, of course, it was awesome to get my 15 seconds of fame, but it was also exciting to be recognized as a source of motivation and positive vibes when that’s not always true about the fitness industry.I’d be lying if I didn’t admit that it hurts, I recently auditioned to be an instructor at one of my favorite fitness studios and didn’t get the job. I try to remind myself to not take it so personally. It doesn’t mean they don’t like me, it might just mean I wasn’t the right fit. Every little aspect has been a learning process — my co-founder Leslie and I are learning what works and what doesn’t work and doing our best to learn from those failures. Find out how chasing her dreams has gained big time attention from companies like Teen Vogue, Arianna Huffington’s new company Thrive Global and Modell’s.Kayla Kleinman is a woman of many talents. She’s an actress-turned-marketer, fitness blogger, yoga teacher, and grad student among so much else. Kayla’s also the co-founder of a new wellness events company in NYC named Holistic Happenings.

In addition to my love of podcasts for motivation + inspiration, I’m also a total non-fiction junkie and love books like #Girlboss and Make Your Mark which both energizes and inspires me.
I also try to make a conscious effort to walk 4-5 miles a day, which is pretty easy in NYC. If I realize I’ve been spending too much time sitting around, I force myself to get up and take a long walk. It always leaves me re-energized and refreshed.

As of this weekend, the Holistic Happening event calendar is booked SOLID until May. People and companies have started approaching us about events including Arianna Huffington’s new company Thrive Global and Modell’s! I legit screamed for a good 5 minutes when I found out we were doing the event at Thrive, I was so flipping excited. When I found out I was featured as one of the top fitness Instagrammers to follow in Teen Vogue in May. I was seeing a show with my best friend and looked at my phone right at the end of intermission only to see my Instagram was legit exploding with notifications and people tagging me in some post about top fitness Instagrammers on Teen Vogue. Or sometimes I just listen to what my body is telling me and use that as a day to catch up on boring, menial tasks which don’t require as much motivation and creativity.

I am a New Yorker, stubborn Taurus, and big-time lover of sushi and iced oat milk lattes (but obviously not together!). More often than not you can find me curled up on the couch in yoga pants reading a trashy novel or watching RuPaul’s Drag Race.I’ve talked about it ALL over the years, from marathon training, to what to do when you’re dating someone that isn’t into fitness. From my own decision to not have kids to the BEST yoga pants (seriously, they are my favorite).

In today’s episode, we dive into what the world of Instagram looks like in 2022. We talk through what Instagram is loving these days and dive deep into the REEL deal on REELS. She shares both her and her client’s experiences going viral, how it led to press, we talk through upcoming algorithm changes to have on your radar, and much more.KK: Overthinking it! Yes, there is strategy behind social media (which is where I come in!) but oftentimes people get so caught up in wanting every post to be perfect that they just don’t post. I’m a big believer that sometimes you just have to put your stuff out there and then refine as you go on and learn more. Just start. Your first reel won’t be perfect. Your first few posts might feel awkward. But don’t let that hold you back from starting.

KK: I help female solopreneurs navigate their Instagram strategy, show up authentically and create engaging content that converts. I do this through a number of steps including optimizing your bio to attract your dream client, creating an engaging content strategy that builds “know, like, and trust” and overall best strategies for best business practices on your socials.
People like to buy from PEOPLE they know, people they like and people they trust. I think we sometimes forget about that on social platforms and just become these weird robot businesses devoid of personality and humanity. It’s so important to also show up as the human behind your business and share bits and pieces of who YOU are. Maybe that’s sharing your cute dog, what things look like behind the scenes, or a day in your life.

I got my first real job out of college thanks to Twitter. ClassPass, which was super small at the time, noticed me thanks to my fitness tweets. They reached out to me because they had an opening at the company and thought I’d be a good fit. Thanks to those tweets, I ended up working at ClassPass for a year in social media and marketing which set me on the marketing path. I fell in love with social media so much that I went on to study it in grad school (yes, that’s a thing!) and completed my Master of Science in Social Media and Mobile Marketing from Pace University’s Lubin School of Business.
KK: Use your Instagram Insights! My favorite quick hack for growth is to go to the content you’ve shared in the last year and then see which post brought the most followers. Repost that post, or recreate something super similar! I do this every few months and the results are always INCREDIBLE.Have you ever looked at doing something on social media and just felt anxious/nauseous/not sure how to proceed? For me, that’s every time I look at Instagram Reels. Thank goodness for humans like Kayla Kleinman who are Reels experts and can break it down into layman terms, making it approachable from start to finish. Before Kayla was your Social Media BFF, her whole life had been impacted by social media – from landing her first job to getting a master’s degree in the subject.
