Spring is always a good time to travel to Hawaii. Unlike other areas, where the spring means rain, the rainy weather of the winter months is a distant memory in Hawaii. The daytime temperatures are comfortably warm, averaging in the high 70s and low 80s. Evenings are slightly colder and dip into the 60s, especially along the beaches. The warm waters of April invite you to frolic, bask in the sun, or learn to surf.

You would be hard pressed to find a wrong time of year to visit Hawaii. However, the joys of spring await when you plan your Hawaiian vacation in April. The last few years have seen increased activity around the islands, so it’s important to monitor accordingly when planning and taking your trip to Maui.Weather-wise, you’ll be happy to know that Maui’s warm tropical climate is fairly consistent year-round with daytime highs from 75-85°F (23-29°C) during the summer and winter, respectively. At the many coastal resorts that dot the island at sea level, temperatures rarely dip below 60°F (15°C) during the coldest of winter. The weather on Maui is typically great for visitors year-round. Our personal preference is April – May.Visiting Hawaii within the next few years, between 2023 to 2024, means you’ll avoid the increased crowds projected to return by 2025. As of early 2023, Oahu remains the only island with fewer visitors compared to the same period in 2019, prior to the pandemic. So if you’re visiting Maui soon, you’ve selected a great time! These Spring months are in our opinion, the best months to visit Maui. The weather is ideal, crowds are lower than during the summer months, and pricing on accommodations and flights are often the lowest you’ll find all year. Crowds and temperatures will both tick upwards toward the start of June. These winter months will be a bit cooler on Maui, and rainstorms are not uncommon during this time of year, especially on the windward (northeast) side of the island. One positive to extra precipitation is that this rain typically enhances the Road to Hana waterfalls. This is also the best time for Whale Watching; Maui has some of the best opportunities for whale watching in the entire state. Many visitors specifically pick Maui during this time of year because they hope to catch a glimpse of the majestic creatures that call the warm, sheltered waters near Maui home- the humpback whales. Each January – March, they migrate down from Alaskan waters to mate, calve, and birth their young.

When the U.S. reverts to standard time in November, Hawaii is 2 hours behind the West Coast and 5 hours behind the East Coast. The off-season, when the best rates are available and the islands are less crowded, is spring (mid-April to mid-June) and fall (September to mid-December)—a paradox because these are the best seasons to be in Hawaii if you’re looking for reliably great weather. To save money or if you just want to avoid crowds, this is the time to visit. Hotel rates and airfares tend to be significantly lower, and good packages are often available.Each island has a leeward side (the side sheltered from the wind) and a windward side (the side that gets the wind’s full force). The leeward sides (the west and south) are usually hot and dry, while the windward sides (east and north) are generally cooler and moist. When you want arid, sunbaked, desertlike weather, go leeward. When you want lush, wet, junglelike weather, go windward.

For all data based on historical data, we’ve averaged the data from the past 11 years (2010-2020). For example, for the hourly temperature at 10am, we’ve looked at the temperature at 10am on every day in April (e.g., April 1, April 2, etc. in 2010, 2011, etc.) and took the arithmetic mean. We did not smooth the data, so for example, our daily temperature line will have some randomness due to the fact that weather is random in the first place.

The trade wind is why the four major islands in Hawaii each have a dry side and a wet side. This moisture-rich wind blows over the islands from a northeasterly direction. When the winds reach the volcanic mountains on the islands, the moisture they carry condenses, and rain clouds form.As one of the ultimate holiday destinations, Hawaii has no shortage of activities for visitors. You will never be bored if you like outdoor activities, sightseeing, or luxury experiences. You’ll also need to rent a separate car on each island if you want to drive around (if not, you can find public or private transportation alternatives). Throughout May, the average temperatures during the day are around 84°F at sea level. Even though May is a more affordable time to visit Hawaii, your holiday costs can ramp up if you are not careful. Activities such as swimming, fishing, and hiking are affordable, if not free. However, you might encounter significant expenses if you want to enjoy fine dining, spa treatments, and the ultimate Hawaiian golfing experience. Hawaii is also an excellent destination for vacationing tennis players. Hawaii’s most popular tennis courts are at the Fairmont Orchid, the Holua Resort near Keauhou Bay, and the Mona Kea Beach Hotel. Popular events in May include the Outrigger Canoe Season, which features races every weekend from May to September. You can also attend the Maui County Ag Festival, a celebration of Hawaii’s local farmers.
