Boston’s official 2022 Christmas tree comes all the way from Nova Scotia! After it’s in its new home, the tree will be lit on Thursday, December 1, as the city of Boston’s Official Tree Lighting is celebrated on Boston Common. This year marks the 51st time a tree has been donated and commemorates 104 years of friendship between Nova Scotia and the people of Boston. The lights are set to sparkle around 7:55 pm, followed by the lighting of nearly 80 other trees throughout the Boston Common and Public Garden.

In Boston, we don’t just stop at tree lightings. From ships to festively festooned landmarks and entire neighborhoods, you’ll discover that we’re pretty serious about our holiday lighting ceremonies. With so many lighting ceremonies happening this year, the only question now is what ones to attend. Here’s our suggestion: All of them!
The Boston Parks and Recreation Department and The Friends of Copley Square welcome the holidays with the annual Copley Square Tree Lighting on November 28, from 5:00 – 6:00 pm. The celebration feature appearances by Santa and Rudolph and musical performances by vocalist Ackeem Hill, the Boston Children’s Chorus, the Boston Pops Esplanade Brass Ensemble and Daniela Gomez Munguia of Berklee College of Music. After the event, make sure to enjoy cookies and pictures with Santa in the Fairmont Copley Plaza.The Christmas Tree at Faneuil Hall Marketplace and its accompanying tree lighting ceremony returns for the first time since 2019! Featuring a 30-foot Norway Spruce stemming from Yonkers, New York, the tree will be adorned with lights, garland, ornaments, ribbons and more in its new home between historic Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market.The Commonwealth Avenue Mall Lighting will immediately follow the Boston Common Tree Lighting. The city will hit the switch and celebrate the lighting of trees up and down Commonwealth Avenue around 8:00 pm on December 1! Enjoy this festive stroll illuminated by hundreds of lights. Chances are, you’ll want to make this picturesque stroll more than once this holiday season!Boston’s newest holiday tradition is a must-visit if you have kids. Experience a special children’s celebration featuring hot cocoa provided by Tuscan Kitchen, caroling and holiday fun of all kinds as the wooden play ship at Martin’s Park is illuminated with blue and white lights. Be on the lookout because we heard Santa and Betty The Yeti will be in attendance this year!Remember when we said we light up entire neighborhoods? This is what we meant! Make sure to join us as Seaport celebrates the holiday season with Light Up Seaport on December 2 from 5:00 – 9:00 pm featuring holiday tunes, a celeb appearance by Betty the Yeti, and more. Children and adults alike will delight in “Toyland!” See huge custom made light exhibits that include a 25 foot star, huge teddy bear and sparkly larger than life train.What are the Downtown Detroit Markets? The Downtown Detroit Markets are a great chance to shop local small businesses selling their items in a pop-up style. Eighteen curated local retailers will set up shop for the holiday season. These shops feature great gift items such as apparel, jewelry, candles, pet toys and treats, books, board games, fine cheeses, chocolates and more!

How long does the tree stay up in Detroit?
Since the official Tree Lighting in November, the tree’s 20,000 LED lights will be on 24/7! They will continue to sparkle and brighten our holidays through January 16, 2023.
The Rink at Campus Martius Park presented by Visit Detroit opens immediately after the incredible Detroit tree lighting November 18, 2022!
