Omega Psi Phi is a founding member of the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), which is composed of nine historically African-American Greek-letter sororities and fraternities that promote interaction through forums, meetings, and other media for the exchange of information, and engage in cooperative programming and initiatives throughout the world. The (NPHC) currently represents over 2.5 million members.In 1983, Vann Watts, a student at Tennessee State University, died of an alcohol overdose following an initiation party. It was reported that prior to his death, he was severely beaten and verbally abused by fraternity members. In 1924, at the urging of fraternity member Carter G. Woodson, the fraternity launched Negro History and Literature Week in an effort to publicize the growing body of scholarship on African-American history. Encouraged by public interest, the event was renamed “Negro Achievement Week” in 1925 and given an expanded national presence in 1926 by Woodson’s Association for the Study of Negro Life and History as “Negro History Week.” Expanded to the full month of February from 1976, this event continues today as Black History Month. In April 2017, Omega Psi Phi member and alleged spree killer, Steve Stephens, referred to the fraternity multiple times in videos he posted during his killing spree. Stephens claimed that he was going to shoot “Greeks” in the head until he was caught.Omega Psi Phi celebrated its centennial during the week of July 27–31, 2011, in Washington, D.C., becoming distinguished as only the third African American collegiate fraternity to reach the century mark. The Centennial Celebration recognized the impact of the Fraternity in communities over the past 100 years, honored Omega Men for achievement in all walks of life, reiterated Omega Psi Phi’s commitment to providing unparalleled community service and scholarship, and charted the Fraternity’s future activities.

In 2023, three Memphis officers that were members of the fraternity had their memberships permanently revoked due to their involvement with the killing of Tyre Nichols. A picture went viral on social media of one of the officers wearing an Omega Psi Phi wristband doing the killing which sparked outrage from many black activists and prompted an official response from the fraternity.

In 1984, a Hampton University student was killed participating in an Omega Psi Phi ritual. The family of the deceased student privately settled with the fraternity for an undisclosed amount as a result of his wrongful death.

Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. (ΩΨΦ) is a historically African-American fraternity. The fraternity was founded on November 17, 1911, the first at a historically black university, by three Howard University students, Edgar Amos Love, Oscar James Cooper and Frank Coleman, and their faculty adviser, Dr. Ernest Everett Just. Since its founding the organization has chartered over 750 undergraduate and graduate chapters.

On August 28, 2016, two Ithaca College students were stabbed (one fatally) as they got into a fight as they left a Omega Psi Phi party held at Willard Straight Hall of Cornell University.In 2009, a former pledge at the University of Houston settled with the fraternity for an undisclosed amount after being hit with a baseball bat, wood board, and TV antenna while pledging. The UH student wanted to join the fraternity because his father was a member. The chapter was placed on suspension following this incident.Talent Hunt Program – Each chapter is required to hold a yearly talent contest, to encourage young people to expose themselves to the Performing Arts. Individuals who win these talent contests receive an award, such as a scholarship.Reclamation and Retention – This program is an effort to encourage inactive members to become fully active and participate in the fraternity’s programs.

In 1977, Robert Brazile, a student at the University of Pennsylvania, collapsed and died at a fraternity house meeting due to injuries and beatings he sustained while pledging the fraternity.

Memorial Service – March 12 is Omega Psi Phi Memorial Day. Every chapter of the Fraternity performs a ritualistic memorial service to remember members who have died.Health Initiatives – Chapters are required to coordinate programs that will encourage good health practices. Programs that members involve themselves in include HIV/AIDS awareness, blood drives, prostate cancer awareness, and sickle cell anemia awareness programs.

In 2015, six Omega Psi Phi members at Johnson C. Smith University were arrested and charged with assault for severely beating pledges over a two-month span.In 1999, Omega Psi Phi was court ordered to pay a former University of Louisville student nearly $1 million for suffering kidney failure due to hazing activity in 1997.

In 2019, national leadership of Omega Psi Phi, Inc., halted all new membership initiation activity when Georgia Tech football player Brandon Adams died during a fraternity event. During step practice for pledges at a townhome near campus, Adams collapsed and was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.In 2014, the chapter at Valdosta State University was banned from campus until at least August 2022 due to severe hazing and violating the school’s code of conduct.

In 2001, Joseph T. Green, a student at Tennessee State University, died as result of an asthma attack he developed from being asked to run long distances while pledging. In 2002, his family filed a $15 million wrongful death lawsuit against the men of Omega Psi Phi Incorporated.In 2015, four Omega Psi Phi members at Saginaw Valley State University were arrested and charged for striking pledges with open hands and paddles. One known pledge sustained a serious injury after losing consciousness one night pledging.In 2018, a fraternity member and accountant at the fraternity headquarters in Georgia blew the whistle in regards to concerning embezzlement allegations among fraternity leadership. As part of his accountant duties, he reported his embezzlement findings to his fraternity’s 24-membered board of directors and was suspended.In 1978, Nathaniel Swimson, a student at North Carolina Central University, died during an off-campus initiation activity. He was asked to run several miles before he collapsed and died. In 2015, a Florida Atlantic University student reported to the police she was gang-raped at an Omega Psi Phi “Oil Spill” step show afterparty. Inside the party, she stated she was suddenly and forcefully pulled behind curtains and raped by a group of men in a dark area. Since 1945, the fraternity has undertaken a National Social Action Program to meet the needs of African Americans in the areas of health, housing, civil rights, and education. Omega Psi Phi has been a patron of the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) since 1955, providing an annual gift of $50,000.00 to the program.

Like many fraternal organizations, Omega Psi Phi has a rich tradition of practices. While some traditions are naturally secret, many are freely expressed in public. A popular one is referring to members as “Que Dogs” or “Ques” (pronounced /ˈkjuː/, like the letter Q). Another is the practice of members voluntarily undergoing branding of the letters, or variations and designs based on them (such as two linked Omega symbols), on their skin. The brands often are displayed in public as a matter of pride; some prospects first learn of the fraternity by seeing members bearing brands.

Scholarship – The Charles R. Drew Scholarship Program encourages academic progress among the organization’s undergraduate members. A portion of the fraternity’s budget is designated for the Charles R. Drew Scholarship Commission, which awards scholarships to members and non-members.

Smith, Jalen Hurts, James DuBose, George Clinton, Kevon Williams, DeHart Hubbard, and numerous presidents of colleges and universities. Among the 2013 Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens, six players and GM Ozzie Newsome are also members/brothers of the fraternity. Over 250,000 men have been initiated into Omega Psi Phi throughout the United States, Bermuda, Bahamas, Virgin Islands, South Korea, Japan, Liberia, Germany, and Kuwait. The fraternity was incorporated under the laws of Washington, D.C., on October 28, 1914.

“I believe it carries through from African tradition. There are tribal marks for rites of passage,” he said. “Americans tend to think of branding as being slavelike instead of it being something that survived in Africa. It shows pride that you belong to this group and that you know the knowledge of this group.”

Although they might not readily admit to having been branded, famous politicians, athletes and businessmen belong to fraternities where branding has been common.A new brand can become infected like any scar, but it rarely happens, said Walter Dillard, a doctor at Shands Teaching Hospital at the University of Florida in Gainesville.

“Branding is not only illegal by fraternal law, but it is illegal by state laws,” said W. Ted Smith, executive secretary of Kappa Alpha Psi in Philadelphia. “We don’t support it at all. If we find, or catch, or see anyone doing it, he’s subject to disciplinary action.”The brands sometimes turn into ugly, undistinguishable scar tissue. If done improperly, a brand can become a serious burn that requires medical attention.

Like many fraternity members with brands, Lewis said he wanted one not only for show, but because he loves his fraternity, Kappa Alpha Psi. He doesn’t care whether another member gets branded, he said. Omega Psi Phi traditionally has been the fraternity that most commonly received brands. Half of the Omega brothers in most campus chapters have been branded, according to From Here to Fraternity, a guide to life in fraternities and sororities. But in the past 20 years, members of other fraternities have adopted the practice to show their lifelong devotion to their brotherhood, said author Robert Egan. “I never wear a short-sleeved shirt to work because I don’t want to answer questions. I also have to worry about my kids growing up and asking about it,” he said. “I wish it would fade away.” Known as “Pee Wee,” the short, muscular South Carolina State University student had variations of the horseshoe-shaped Greek Omega symbol — the sign of his college fraternity — branded into both of his arms and his buttocks. “The things you do as a frivolous young adult come back to haunt you,” said a 40-year-old Washington magazine editor who was branded in 1967. He spoke only on condition of anonymity. Brands, long used among black fraternity members to show their dedication to an organization, are believed to have evolved from the African use of tribal marks. Brands mark the bodies of many black American men. Jordan, a member of Omega Psi Phi, agreed. “It just shows that we’re all united,” he said through a Chicago Bulls spokesman. “It shows togetherness and friendship.”In the 1988 Spike Lee movie School Daze, “Gamma” sweetheart Jane passionately kissed the brand that Gamma leader Julian displayed when he took off his shirt. For reasons other than pride, Julian didn’t appear to regret having a brand either.

Before he took to the stage at a “Beautiful” contest in Daytona Beach, a well-oiled William Chandler flexed and showed off the five brands burnt into his skin.The brands sometimes do fade over the years. But the memory of getting branded, and the emotion-charged moment when the heat of the branding iron presses against the flesh, lingers.Neither school administrators nor officials of the fraternities’ national offices condone the practice because of its health risks and legal questions.

He says he is proud of being branded and does not regret it. Branded skin often creates a keloid — a raised mass of scar tissue, Dillard said. “Black people are more prone to keloid. It’s not a health problem; it’s just a cosmetic problem.” Not all of the 328,000 men who belong to black Greek organizations agree. Getting branded, or “hit” as it is called, is the choice of each member. Once the choice is made, though, you are marked for life, critics say.

Rut brings out an alpha’s primal side, and for a number of evolutionary reasons, aggression would be one of them. I made a post a little over a week ago about alphas going into rut, and if you subscribe to the idea that alphas only go into rut because of an omega’s heat, aggression would be a great evolutionary defense mechanism to ensure protection of a pregnant mate/their pups/etc. If you don’t subscribe to that idea, or you just want another reason altogether, alphas as a sex have an incredibly strong amount of power. Often times it’s just called “alpha strength,” but it’s stuff where they can lift whole people without difficulty (or multiple peoples) or they can hold doors closed against three people beating on them, etc. Going into rut, like heats for omegas, is greatly about losing control of themselves. It’s a natural conclusion then that, even the most mild-tempered alpha who never uses or abuses their strength could suddenly go wild without even knowing it, or get aggressive, because they’re not fully aware of their own strength anymore, or when or when not to use it (all of mum’s strong words about using it only for good don’t really spring to their minds). I think most displays of aggression are limited to possessiveness – someone is threatening their mate, either actually or just through misunderstanding on the alpha’s part. But it’s an aggression usually with purpose – protect their mate. A final thing to note about scents is that it plays a huge role in omegaverse for the purpose that this is how one will find their true mate. This is someone’s soulmate – the person who “smells better than anybody they’ve ever met” is how it’s almost always written, but we see a number of things in advance to indicate soulmates usually: their personalities fit in complementary fashion, they support each other, they’re listed as the OTP in the fic’s header, etc etc. But in-world, the realisation almost always comes because they can smell something incredibly special on their mate. Again, betas are limited to the normal range of smells so they won’t be able to detect this, but an alpha or an omega whose true mate is a beta could detect them.

This also (god I can’t stop talking about scents) is why scenting is a thing, going both ways. It’s seen as something intimate to rub your nose into someone’s neck (which is generally where the person’s scent is strongest, and in omegaverse is commonly where the “scent gland” is located) and inhale their scent deeply. Think of that as something akin to feeling up your partner (or a complete stranger). You don’t do it in public or in front of your family without at least blushing a lot or a number of people kinda recoiling a little (because it’s such a personal/private thing), and if the advance is unwanted, it’s when things really start going downhill because that’s usually always what precedes an assault. Don’t want to end that half of scenting on a bad note though, and I want to remind that this is almost always something exuberant; the alpha and omega pair in the story will just inhale deeply their mate’s scent and feel at peace or feel relieved at their safety or them being back or whatnot. It’s an intimate and loving gesture.

It’s traditional that only alphas and omegas have this enhanced sense of smell, like I said. Betas – who for an intents and purposes are just regular humans like you or I – don’t have the ability to smell these things can often be oblivious to certain things: They don’t know their omega friend is going into heat and they aren’t really aware something is wrong when that first alpha advances on them before whoa they should not be that close that’s wrong. So it would be back to us, trying to pick up on these things through social cues; beta friends might keep track of their omega friends’ heats so they can know in advance, or they could be good at reading faces, etc.That said, alphas in rut will just naturally be more prickly in their temper and their admonitions and might not be able to control their strength as well leading up to rut or especially during it. I’d imagine that alpha/alpha pairings during either one of their ruts (if your version of omegaverse allows alphas to go into rut without the trigger of an omega’s heat, see aforementioned referenced post) would probably leave a lot of collateral damage, and if both of them were to go into rut at the same time they’d definitely not be getting back their rent deposit.

For the first one, the answer is yes for the most part. Each individual exudes their own scent that is uniquely theirs. However, only alphas and omegas have an enhanced sense of smell. Scents in omegaverse will also carry other things beyond just someone’s base smell – they very often contain elements of the person’s emotions. For instance, if an alpha were to get very angry, others might back away because they can smell the anger rolling off of them (like a pungent smell). Or if an omega were to be scared, the fear would literally permeate the air, and very often you’ll see others rushing to the rescue of a scared omega. Of course, these can be reversed – an alpha can exude fear (say, they thought their mate was going to die) or an omega can be very angry. And other emotions can be detected as well. Additionally, the scents are what carry the pheromones that attract alphas to omegas and omegas to alphas during heat. It’s described by alphas as like a pure distillation of the omega’s natural scent – if they smelled earthy before, during heat they’ll smell like forests after a rainshower, like rocks when they get wet. Scents are also an evolutionary defense mechanism; most authors will establish in their universe that a mated omega’s heat smells good only to their mate, and other alphas find their scent to be repugnant. Perhaps while not bad enough to literally force them from the room, it’s something that they might have to grit their teeth or turn their nose up at – like us and strong body odor, or us and farts or wet dog smell or the like. It’s a strong smell of unpleasant that will be a first line of defense for a mated omega.

“Ours is a service organization,” Burch says, “and we are always looking for men who will get out and do something for the community. Loki’s documentary filmmaking about race is a good attribute to commit to the black community.”Initiating the first white man into the Utah chapter of the historically all-black fraternity Omega Psi Phi wasn’t a question of race, members say, but of heart.

The Omega Psi Phi fraternity was founded Nov. 17, 1911, at Howard University in Washington, D.C., according to the group’s website. “Although a small chapter, we continue to have a big impact” across Utah, the group’s president, Emmette W. Cornelius IV, writes on the website. “Many brothers are members of the United States armed forces stationed at Hill Air Force Base and Fort Douglas in Salt Lake City. Others hold prominent positions in education and medicine with the University of Utah and other institutions of higher education.” She was the first white student to integrate Tougaloo College in Jackson, Miss., a historically black school, and is recognized as the first white “sista” in the largest and most prestigious all-black sorority, Delta Sigma Theta. His mother was one of the white students who joined a sit-in at a Woolworth’s segregated lunch counter in Jackson, Miss., where she was spit upon by a crowd of angry white townspeople.

“We have never had a policy against anyone based on race,” says Smith, chair of the department of education, culture and society at the University of Utah and an Omega member since he was an undergraduate at Eastern Illinois University more than three decades ago.

Omega has grown now to include more than 700 chapters throughout the United States, Bermuda, Bahamas, U.S. Virgin Islands, Korea, Japan, Liberia, Germany and Kuwait.Omega established its first undergraduate chapter at Weber State University in 1983, says the Utah group’s website, but within a couple of years, many members had graduated. So, in 1990, several older members, who had come from other states, decided to launch a graduate chapter to be known as Iota Iota Iota or Tri Iota.

The frat’s “cardinal principles” — manhood, scholarship, perseverance and uplift — led to the creation of a national social action program “to meet the needs of African Americans in the areas of health, housing, civil rights and education.”He wanted to belong to a fraternity that shared his values: “brotherhood and coming together for a common cause and purpose of uplifting the community.”

His latest documentary, “After Selma: The Fight for the Right to Vote Continues,” is further evidence of his lifelong focus on justice for African Americans.Mulholland is a Lehi-based filmmaker whose mother was a Freedom Rider in the 1960s civil rights movement. His documentary about her showcased his commitment to race issues as did the organization he created with her — the Joan Trumpauer Mulholland Foundation, which focuses on ending racism through education.Tri Iota brothers are leaders with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah, the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society and numerous churches.
