People with various hair textures have adapted the method to their needs. Popular variations include the use of sulfate-free shampoos, which are more widely available now than they were in 2001, and occasional blow-drying with the use of heat protectants and a diffuser instead of a regular hair dryer. An additional essential step in the curly hair care routine includes the use of deep conditioners once a week. These deep conditioning treatments work more effectively if they are performed regularly once a week. Application of heat by using thermal heat caps helps deep conditioners penetrate the cuticle better leaving the hair more moisturised.Other authors have written curly hair care guides which focus on specific hair types. Curly Like Me: How to Grow Your Hair Healthy, Long, and Strong by Teri LaFlesh provides natural hair care tips especially for tight curls. Better than Good Hair: The Curly Girl Guide to Healthy, Gorgeous Natural Hair by Nikki Walton focuses on afro-textured hair. Writers at the Naturally Curly website provide hair care advice based on curl pattern, porosity, density, hair thickness and other factors.
While variations of the method had been in use before then, in 2001, it was introduced to a wider audience by hairstylist Lorraine Massey, founder of the Devachan Salons. Lorraine had parted ways with DevaCurl few years ago and is now the owner and founder of Curly World products and Spiral XYZ Curl Salon in New York City. When Curly Girl: The Handbook was first published, straight hair was the prevailing style for women in the United States, the United Kingdom, and elsewhere, and many women felt pressured to straighten their hair with flat irons or chemical relaxers. Massey writes in her introduction about growing up in England, where she was ridiculed for having curly hair. When she moved to New York City, she had an eye-opening experience: “Jewish, Italian, Latino, and African-American people living around me had curly hair that looked like mine! I no longer looked or felt like an outsider.”
The method is also used by men; the name “curly girl” reflects the relative importance of hair care to women and girls due to societal expectations. The method can also be used on kinky, coily, and wavy hair, which are often treated as curly hair types or “curl patterns” on hair care websites and in hair typing systems. The curly girl method also requires one to know one’s hair porosity. There are low, medium and high hair porosity. Low hair porosity is when the hair cuticles are tightly shut. Low porosity hair has difficulty obtaining moisture but once moisture is absorbed it will remain moisturized. This porosity type is common with hair that has suffered little to no damage (either from heat styling tools or from chemicals) and thus it is the preferred porosity level. Medium porosity hair is when the hair cuticles are loose, allowing moisture to be easily absorbed and retained. High porosity is when there are gaps in the hair cuticles which allows the hair to easily absorb the moisture but also easily lose the moisture just as easily as it was absorbed. These gaps are caused by long term damage to the hair from things like over-manipulation, heat damage and chemical damage from hair dyes and relaxers.
The Andre Walker Hair Typing System and Fia’s hair typing system groups curly types from 2 to 4 and A to C (representing increasing tightness of the curl) with type 1 representing the complete absence of curl (or straight hair). Type 2 typically encompasses varying degrees of wavy hair, Type 3 contains loose, spiraled curls, and Type 4 includes tighter curls, kinks, and coils. Type A tends to be less defined than B and C, and when going from A to C the hair is more likely to be well-defined. As co-washing has become more popular, consumer demand has spawned a new hair product, the “cleansing co-wash”, which proponents claim removes buildup from the hair and scalp without the harsh “stripping” or drying effects of traditional shampoo. Massey’s book also includes techniques for cutting curly hair, such as cutting the hair when dry rather than wet. Related hair cutting techniques include the Deva cut, Ouidad cut, and RI CI cut. Deva Cut, which is created by Lorraine Massey, is widely popular now. It involves cutting each curl individually and at an angle so as to not disrupt the curl pattern. The Curly Girl Method is an approach to hair care designed by author Lorraine Massey for natural hair (coils, waves and curls) that has not been chemically relaxed. This method discourages the daily use of sulfate shampoo, which is considered too harsh for curly hair. Among other things, it calls for the use of a cleansing conditioner in place of shampoo (also called “conditioner washing” or “co-washing”), no silicones (used in many commercial conditioners and styling products), the use of a diffuser when blowdrying, and no combs, brushes, or terrycloth towels. It also includes tips for using hair gel and other styling products. The aim in general is to treat naturally curly hair gently, minimizing damage to the hair cuticle; to keep it moisturized, since curly hair is more prone to dryness than straight hair; and, perhaps most significantly, to accentuate rather than interfere with the hair’s natural curl pattern.
To say Dellinger is a badass boss would be an understatement. She’s a product developer, entrepreneur, TV show host, consultant, wife, and mother of four children. We recently chatted with the mogul to discuss how she juggles it all, and how she manifested her way to a chance connection with her inspiration: Oprah.
Oprah came from such humble beginnings. That had the biggest impact on me because I was so embarrassed for so long about where I came from, my family, and my past experiences. I never wanted to bring anyone home. I realized later that this was a blessing. We’ve seen her go from big hair and purple eye shadow to this sophisticated, regal boss. She’s a beautiful woman who has balls. Of course, she inspires me. My passion, determination, and faithfulness is due to my hard upbringing. It’s why I have grit, and I see that in Oprah, too.Michelle is the Culture & News Writer for OprahMag.com, where she writes about celebrities (she considers herself an expert on Beyoncé and Reese Witherspoon), plus the latest in pop-culture news, binge-worthy TV shows, and movies. The transplanted Southerner turned ambitious New Yorker lives her best life by listening to hip-hop and Pod Save America, watching The Office on repeat, quoting Oprah-isms, eating dessert before dinner, and avoiding avocado. Seriously, she doesn’t get the hype.
Dellinger’s sound business acumen, diversified product line, and bootstraps mentality eventually caught the attention of another powerful mogul: Oprah.
Outside of the show, Dellinger recently made headlines for assisting Jaqi Wright and Nikki Howard (a.k.a. The Furlough Cheesecake Sisters) after they were laid off without pay during the partial government shutdown. Using her negotiating skills and contacts at Walmart, Dellinger was able to get their “slices of smile” on the shelves at the big-box store. But her road to riches wasn’t paved in stock options, a trust fund, or a hefty bank account, especially since Dellinger grew up in poverty in Sacramento, California. We first learned of the beauty pioneer’s childhood struggles in her 2015 memoir, Against All Odds: From the Projects to the Penthouse.
In 2018, Mind Your Business with Mahisha premiered on the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN). With Dellinger as a host, the unscripted series is geared towards helping other female business owners fulfill their dreams thanks to her mentor-like, tough love tips on turning a small venture into an empire.
And through her Black Girls Making Millions Academy, she’s using her ambitious spirit and ability to turn lemons into profitable lemonade to uplift other Black women.
Now, you’d be hard-pressed not to find a natural hair section on websites or in beauty supply stores, but it wasn’t this way for Dellinger and women of color in 2002. Frustrated by a lack of options, Dellinger decided she could corner an untapped market for African American women in search of products for curly hair textures. Using her own personal savings and savvy marketing skills, Dellinger hired a cosmetic chemist to create hair formulas free of damaging agents like sulfate and parabens. Subsequently, the Curls brand was born.In 2002, Dellinger, 46, took the leap from a cushy corporate job in marketing at the technology company Intel to start her own natural hair brand, Curls. Today, Curls has grown into a multi-million dollar brand with products available at major retailers such as Target, Walmart, Amazon, and JCPenney.
Along with Dellinger’s tough upbringing, it was the fear of leaving her financial fate in the hands of managers and corporate America that caused her to take ownership of her future and career. Despite how stable the tech world may seem, Dellinger knew she could be one economic disaster or market crash away from financial ruin. That looming threat sparked an “aha moment” and game-changing idea for Dellinger: start a business.
Do I always get that right? No. But I always strive for it. When it’s out of whack, I have to lean on my husband. That’s why I stress having a supportive team or a circle of people around you that you trust that can lift some of the weight. But you have to know that sometimes it won’t be balanced, and it’s perfectly okay. You also get the right to be selfish and say no to things. I’m very selfish with my time way more than I am with my money.

Thanks to my super curly hair type (and not being outside nearly as much), I can get away with holding onto this hair color for at least two weeks before easily rinsing it out to apply another fun shade. I currently have my sights set on Dragon Fruit, which I’ll mix with Golden Bars for a true rose gold shade. I’m so glad that we curly, kinky, coily folks can now change our hair color hassle-free without sacrificing our unique hair texture.
I’ve always had a complicated relationship with my hair. I’ve tried literally everything—relaxers, weave, permanent color, braids, you name it. Cutting off my tresses in 2018 to recover from years of ever-changing styles that had led to a host of issues (think: breakage, hair loss, and heat damage) was freeing. Two years later, my hair is full, dark, and healthier than ever after giving it a break, but I can’t help miss the fun I had with it. That’s when I discovered colored hair wax.
As I started my search for the perfect hair wax, I wasn’t pleased with what I found. Many of the product ingredient lists I saw contained harsh components, such as drying alcohols that could make my hair stiff and cause even more breakage. It wasn’t until I stumbled upon ORS Curls Unleashed Color Blast Temporary Makeup Wax (from $9; amazon.com) that I began taking the idea of coloring my hair more seriously. The next day, I unraveled my twists by coating my fingers in coconut oil, which not only helped them to slip out easier but also helped add shine. The color wasn’t as bold or bright as when I first applied the wax, but could easily pass for a dye job! Super impressed, I immediately shared the result on my Instagram stories, which was received with plenty of enthusiastic compliments from friends. The ORS Curls Unleashed Wax comes in nine shades—from metallic gold Bombshell ($10; amazon.com) to precious lilac Mystic ($10; amazon.com). I opted for an orange-y hue called Peachtree ($10; amazon.com), as well as Golden Bars (from $10, amazon.com) which is a pretty bronze color. I decided to mix them together to create a unique copper color just for my hair.
How long does curls unleashed color blast last?
Thanks to my super curly hair type (and not being outside nearly as much), I can get away with holding onto this hair color for at least two weeks before easily rinsing it out to apply another fun shade.
Unlike hair dye and bleach, you don’t have to worry about the same kind hair cuticle damage to your strands with this wax —it even doubles as a moisturizing treatment, since it’s made with nourishing beeswax and cetearyl alcohol (a hydrating alcohol) to revive and protect curls. Even better? If you like to change your color to reflect your mood, or just aren’t crazy about whatever shade you’ve chosen after it’s applied, the wax is temporary and comes out in just 1-2 washes.I came across colored hair wax while browsing hair accounts on Instagram. I saw a spectrum of people with curly ‘dos—from fine waves to kinky coils like mine—experimenting with wax in bright, eye-catching colors, including hot pink and electric blue. The wax allowed their personalities to shine through, while still helping them to maintain defined, luscious, healthy-looking curls.

I will say that the only downside to this wax is that I definitely applied ~way~ too much, leading to teeny tiny copper flakes on my pillows and phone when I wasn’t wearing a bonnet. I think one coat would have been enough to get the desired pigment I was going for, but I can deal with a few flakes in exchange for gorgeous hair color and zero damage (compared to ammonia-based dyes that strip your natural oils and the natural pigment of your hair—no thanks).
Before applying the wax, I washed my hair thoroughly and smoothed on a leave-in conditioner. I then pulled on gloves and a towel to protect my clothing and raked the wax through my hair with my fingers in sections. I was immediately in love with how defined, moisturized, and pigmented my curls looked with just one coat! I decided to apply a second coat, this time setting my hair in a series of twists and letting the wax dry during the day. I protected my hair with a silk bonnet at bedtime and was surprised to see zero color residue in the bonnet.

Curl activators can sometimes be used to refresh as well. To do this, I recommend you wet your hands and emulsify a little curl activator in between your hands. Then smooth over your hair and scrunch up to refresh. You can add a tiny bit more to wet hands and finger coil problem areas. Just remember that if you’re using a curl activator with humectants (like glycerin) you’ll need to apply a gel over it so it doesn’t frizz. Again, be very light handed and water down your gel so you don’t weigh down your hair. Please do me a favor and share this post to social media, as it helps me grow my audience and spread the word about our curly hair movement! And remember to subscribe to my YouTube Channel for more curly hair tips and product recommendations. Thanks!

Generally, you will apply curl activator before other styling products but after leave in if you’re using one. Rake it through from root to tip and follow with a styling product that has hold, like a gel. Delilah Orpi is the founder of The Holistic Enchilada, a blog about curly hair and conscious beauty. She followed the Curly Girl Method to bring back her curls and is passionate about using more ethical products. Delilah is a trained Curly Hair Consultant and has been featured in Curl magazine, GLAMOUR, and Yahoo. She writes to create awareness about the clean beauty movement and simple curly hair care. Rockin Ringlets is Jessicurl’s strongest curl enhancer. It works really well to control frizz but needs a product with hold over it, especially in humid or dry climates.TreLuxe Hi! Definition Gel is a gel that creates curls with definition and shine, as well as helps control frizz. A high performance curl definer, this product not only helps define your curls but also maintains their moisture thanks to the active botanicals in the formula. The extracts not only provide you with a defined curl, but also help to hydrate your hair by reducing moisture loss, strengthen your hair by stabilizing bonds within the cortex of each strand of hair, improves its texture for a smoother appearance, and provides increased elasticity.
Thank you for helping me on my wavy journey. When my hair was nearly to my waist I had a lot more curl. Now with a chin length Bob my hair is curly when wet and then drys to just open waves and curls under at the bottom. I do use EvolVh Ultrashine shampoo and conditioner then for styler right outside of the shower, I use Kenra 6 styling cream mixed with gel and it is half a pea size amount for each in wet hands, emulsify and prayer hands and rake. My hands cannot make a fist do to osteoarthritis but I push it up and against my head then I diffuse with my Dyson about five minutes. It looks quite good with waves and mixed curls but dries to barely 2A waves. My hair is very fine white and silver with a tiny bit on blonde still underneath. It is low density and high porosity. I live in very dry mountains of Colorado and I am 78. I clarify about every two to three weeks. I use a couple of squirts of EvolVh UltraRepair reconstructing Masque mixed with my conditioner in the shower and cap it while I bath. I do have oily roots too. So I shampoo on third day unless I want oily hair dripping on my shoulder! Is my hair just changing and not able to hold my wave pattern anymore? When I use EvolVh styling products my hair looks greasy so I switched to the Kenra6 and good old Aussie Instant freeze gel. My stylist uses the Kenra 6 and it seems to work okay at keeping the desert frizz down. Am I doing something wrong? Oh, I use Ion clarifying shampoo as we have very hard water.
How do you use curls unleashed?
How to use:Simply apply to damp hair, don’t rinse.Use alone or follow with Curls Unleashed styling item of your choice.Apply a liberal amount to damp hair and twist or coil hair to style as desired.Use as a moisturizing leave-in conditioning créme.Use as a foundational product to layer in with other styling products.
MopTopCurly Hair Custard is great for all curl types but can cause frizz and dryness in very humid or dry climates due to the glycerin content in the gel. It’s lightweight with a medium hold so if you prefer those stats then it can work for you.
Do you use curl activator?
A curl activator won’t make your hair curlier but it will enhance the natural curl pattern! If your hair is not defined naturally, then using a curl activator with hold might help since it adds moisturizing properties.
Confident Coils is an all climate curl enhancer that also offers hold. It’s a creamy product that creates definition and protects against humidity. It’s not as curl enhancing as the other products included in this list but because it’s an all climate option with hold it would be great for those living in really humid or really dry conditions, where many of the other options wouldn’t work. You could also layer Rockin Ringlets under for more curl enhancement.
Sounds like you’re doing all the right things. The dry climate will make it a bit difficult to find the right balance. Your curl pattern can also change over time so maybe the wave is your current pattern and you can’t get more curl out of it.Are you clarifying? Do you have hard water? Is your hair not as curly as you want it to be? Are you using too much or not enough product? If you’ve tried so many products then products are probably not the problem. I would look into all the other areas like techniques, expectations, knowing your hair and what it needs, etc. Good luck! Thank you for all the information. I’ve have learned so much from you. Thanks for all the help!! You have saved my confidence. I have damaged and hair loss. Your the best!! However, you should note that humectants can be problematic for some. Since humectants pull moisture towards them, this causes frizz and dryness in humid and dry climates. For this reason, you should layer a product with hard hold over a curl activator if you live in a humid or dry climate. It’s one of the more popular curl activators in the curl community. I have tried it and find it’s too thick for my fine hair, but it seems to work for most curls. My stylist says she loves to use it on thicker and tighter curls versus looser curl patterns and thinner hair.
What nationality is curl?
cURL was first released in 1996. It was originally named httpget and then became urlget before adopting the current name of cURL. The original author and lead developer is the Swedish developer Daniel Stenberg, who created cURL because he wanted to automate the fetching of currency exchange rates for IRC users.
A curl activator won’t make your hair curlier but it will enhance the natural curl pattern! If your hair is not defined naturally, then using a curl activator with hold might help since it adds moisturizing properties.
It is humectant heavy containing flaxseed, glycerin, and aloe. It also contains epsom salt which can cause drying in some hair types (but it’s a good curl enhancer). It’s a thin liquid that’s easy to apply. For those with fragrance sensitivities, you can get this product fragrance free.
It’s very lightweight so would work well on all curl types. If you live in a very humid place, you may need to layer a humectant free gel over this for lasting style.Curl activators often use humectants, ingredients that attract moisture. Humectants help enhance your natural curl pattern and create more definition. More moisture is what waves and curls usually want and this helps to make your hair look curlier.
It’s thick yet light enough to distribute evenly without making my hair heavy. It also smells great like all the other TreLuxe products, however, it is a pretty strong scent.
AG RE:COIL has a creamy texture and a strong scent. It contains polyquats, protein, herbal extracts, and glycerin. It’s good at controlling frizz and defining curls. It smells like coconut and can be heavy or feel oily for some curl types. Be careful not to use too much with this cream so it doesn’t weigh down your hair. A curl activator is a product that can be applied to wet hair before other products to boost hydration and softness, and enhance curls. These products are also known as moisturizers, moisturizing creams, or curl enhancers. This is possible since curl activators tend to contain humectants which can cause flash drying, or if you use too much. If you suspect flash drying, use a moisturizing product underneath the curl activator. The best curl activator for your hair type may be out there waiting to be discovered. A curl activator enhances your natural curl pattern, prevents frizz, increases shine, adds moisture, softens the hair, adds volume, and smooths out curls. The best type of curling activator for each curl type is different so it’s important you find one that suits your needs. Give one of these a try if you want to enhance your curls even more. We all want bouncy curls, but the truth is that not all curl activators are created equal. The best curl activators will give you more volume and bounce in your hair without weighing it down or making it feel stiff and dry. This guide lays out the most popular curl activators, tells you what their benefits and cons are, and recommends which curl enhancer will work for your curl type. If you are looking for your curls to pop with less frizz, then I would recommend trying a curl activator. You will probably need to experiment to find the exact one that works for you but this process can be very rewarding and fun! Some curl activators are creams, but most curl creams are not curl enhancers.
