The Eagles didn’t get far down the court before Max Armer for Barbers Hill was fouled and sent to the line. Armer hit both free throws with only 15 seconds left on the clock giving the Eagles a 52-46 lead.Wilson took over coaching duties on the floor for Head Coach Brian Courtney who was injured in an accident at home and was hospitalized. He is at home now recovering.”To me, we’re not good enough to play that type of basketball. We have to play as a team and when we did, we were very successful, and the shots were falling,” Wilson said.

The Broncos immediately fouled Armer on the inbound pass sending him to the line again. Armer hit one extending the lead to 53-48 with six seconds left.

With no timeouts remaining, the Broncos got the ball down court and Jaksen Wheeler hit a 3-pointer to bring the Broncos within two, 53-51, but time ran out.
That brought the Dayton faithful to their feet at the end of the third quarter. The Broncos had drawn to within three points by the end of the third, 34-31.That stretch came during the middle of the first quarter and spilled over into the second quarter where neither team could hit a bucket for the first three minutes. When Eagles forward Josh Guidry hit a shot in the paint with 59 ticks remaining on the clock, he gave the Eagles their last 10-point advantage and what seemed like an improbable comeback for the Broncos. “Early on I felt like we were playing really well, and then we hit a four or five-minute stretch where we got complacent and lazy and it cost us,” said Dayton assistant head basketball coach Frank Wilson. A wild and wooly fourth quarter ensued. Twice the Eagles jumped out to a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter only to watch it disappear as the Broncos kept coming.

“I don’t think we were as patient as we needed to be. We took the first shot we got and sometimes you’ve got to be a little patient to get what you want,” the Barbers Hill coach said.

But with Jerren Godfrey’s three-pointer came a second technical of the quarter against Dayton. The Eagles missed both shots and breathed new life into the Broncos’ comeback. The Broncos staked out an early lead that evaporated with some turnovers and poor rebounding, only to close the gap within two trailing 14-12 at the end of the first quarter.

“We talked about the ability to close out and how to hedge,” Wilson said. That intensity showed up in the third quarter, waned the early part of the fourth with three key turnovers and possessions and put the Eagles back in the driver’s seat all the way to the last two minutes of the game.

It was close, but no consolation for the Broncos who may have jeopardized a post-season appearance with their heartbreaking loss to their rival Barbers Hill Eagles, 53-51, on Tuesday night.
“I told them there was about 90 percent of the game where they did exactly what we asked them to do. It was that 10 percent during the second quarter that was not what we talked about,” he said.
