Slap Hit Softball

The word “slap” is frequently used to minimize the perceived violence of an act, even if the act was especially severe. One person may hit another across the face and injure them severely, but in calling it a slap, it may seem less severe, since slapping is often associated with minor violence.Studies have shown that although Americans frown upon domestic violence regardless of whether the perpetrator is male or female, generally they are more accepting of minor violence, such as slapping, when it is perpetrated by a woman against a man or vice versa. Women who inflict minor acts of violence on their male partners have a higher-than-normal probability of being severely assaulted by those partners, and domestic violence experts therefore advise at-risk women to refrain from even minor acts of physical aggression against their partners. It has been suggested by Michael Lamb that both men and women who are violent toward their spouses are more likely to be so with their children as well. The purpose of a slap is often to humiliate, more than injure. A “slap in the face” is a common idiom, dating back to the late 1800s, that means to rebuke, rebuff or insult.

Slapping is viewed differently by different cultures. In many countries, such as Iceland, slapping a child is viewed as a form of physical abuse, and is illegal (see corporal punishment of children), whereas in others, such as England, it is seen by only some parents as abusive, and even then only moderately so. The slapping of children in England and Northern Ireland remains legal as of 2023, despite being illegal in the two other UK constituent countries of Scotland (since 2020) and Wales (since 2022).In some cultures, when girls menstruate for the first time, their mothers often slap them across the face, a cultural tradition thought by some to signify the difficulties of life as a woman.

Slapping or smacking is striking a person with the open palm of the hand, in a movement known as a slap or smack. A backhand uses the back of the hand instead of the palm.In the 2020s, slapping contests began to gain popularity and attention as a combat sport via viral videos; opponents stand across from each other and exchange blows until one concedes or is knocked out.

Why do some softball players slap hit?
Slap hitting can be used to try to get the batter on base or to try to advance a runner who is already on base. The goal of the hitter is to slap the ball in a place that is farthest from the base where they don’t want the throw to go.
The word slap was first recorded in 1632, probably as a form of onomatopoeia. It shares its beginning consonants with several other English words related to violence, such as “slash”, “slay”, and “slam”. The word is found in several English colloquialisms, such as, “slap fight”, “slap-happy”, “slapshot”, “slapstick”, “slap on the wrist” (as a mild punishment), “slap in the face” (as an insult or, alternatively, as a reproof against a lewd or insulting comment), and “slap on the back” (an expression of friendship or congratulations). In 2023, UFC president Dana White attempted to popularize slapping contests via the Power Slap League and its television series Power Slap, which also received sanctioning from the Nevada State Athletic Commission with rules patterned upon those of mixed martial arts. The series, which had also been delayed after White was filmed slapping his wife in an altercation at a New Year’s party, faced poor viewership and was cancelled by TBS after one season.

In his 2004 text The Naked Woman: A Study of the Female Body, anthropologist Desmond Morris defines what he calls the “cheek slap,” which he describes as “the classic action of a lady responding to the unwelcome attentions of a male.” Morris categorizes the cheek slap as a “display blow”, meaning one that is impossible to ignore but doesn’t cause much damage.
Slapping is very often portrayed in films and television programs. For example, in Slap Her… She’s French girls and women typically slap boys, men and other females who offend them in some way and humiliate them. For about five years beginning in 2004, happy slapping became a UK fad. Happy slapping is the phenomenon whereby kids assault someone while being taped by a friend on their mobile phone: afterwards the video is uploaded to a site like YouTube. Media coverage of the alleged trend led to a nationwide moral panic, including a call by one member of parliament for schools to block mobile phone signals.

Slap bunting is an offensive baseball and softball technique wherein the batter attempts “to hit the ball to a place on the infield that’s farthest from the place where the out needs to be made”.To execute slap bunting, the player is almost always in the back of the left-hand side of home plate, feet slightly open to right field, and choked up slightly on the bat. The moment the pitch is released from the pitcher’s hand, the player must rotate his hips toward the pitcher and then cross his back (left) foot over his front foot, moving up to the very front edge of the batter’s box. His shoulders should face the pitcher at this point. If the pitch is in the strike zone, the batter should then extend his arms so that the bat is at the correct angle for where he wants to place the ball — the barrel trailing the hands if he wants the ball to go to the left side of the field, and the opposite if he wants it to go to the right.

Is a slap a strike?
Slapping or smacking is striking a person with the open palm of the hand, in a movement known as a slap or smack. A backhand uses the back of the hand instead of the palm.
The technique is often successful in sacrifice circumstances, where the placement of the ball could help advance a runner already on base. It is also often used when batters are having difficulty getting a hit off of a difficult pitcher, or when they have a better opportunity of getting on base because of the slap bunt than a hit, perhaps because of the player’s running speed.

Some advanced players might perform a slap hit, which is the same technique except that the player swings to place the ball in an infield hole or over the infielders’ heads. The technique is quite common in softball because of the difficulty of getting a hit with a pitcher only 40 feet (12 m) away. By already being in the front of the batter’s box with the batter’s body turned halfway toward first base, the batter already has some momentum toward first base and might be in better position to get a base hit.

The first part to answering the question of why slapping someone is considered assault is to define what assault is. The definition of assault varies, but it is generally understood to be the act of trying to injure someone else. The act of physically harming someone is certainly considered to be assault, but even the threat or attempt to try to physically hurt someone is also considered to be assault.

Is a slap hit a bunt?
Difference between a Slap Hit and a Drag Bunt A slap is not a bunt. A foul ball while slap hitting is NOT a strike if the batter already has 2 strikes. A slap is a batted ball that has been struck with a short chopping motion rather than a full swing.
So now that assault has been defined and can be understood, the question of whether slapping someone is considered assault can be addressed. Slapping someone involves the physical contact of hitting your hand across another person’s face or other part of their body. The physical contact itself makes the act assault, but it would most certainly be considered assault if there was force in the slap. If the victim of the slap was fearful of being slapped, that in itself may be considered assault, depending on the state.

There are several different types of assault. The first is verbal assault, which is essentially a threat of physical injury, without actually touching the person. Another type of assault is sexual assault, which constitues any sexual touch that occurs without the consent of the victim. Then there is simple assault and aggravated assault. Simple assault is when someone is injured from a physical attack or was simply afraid that such an attack would occur. Aggravated assault is the most serious form of assault, as it involves the victim being physically injured with a weapon such as a knife, gun or a bat.It is serious to be accused of assault or of domestic violence. We at Kaufman, Nichols & Kaufman Attorneys at Law understand the severity of such an allegation. That is why we offer resources to those who have been accused of assault. If you are in need of legal representation, do not hesitate to reach out to us. We would be happy to answer any questions that you may have.

If you are a fan of movies, you likely have seen a scene in which a young couple is in a lover’s quarrel and the female character gets fed up with the conversation or the young man says something she doesn’t like, and she slaps him across the face. This is so commonplace in movies, especially in romantic comedies, that many people are surprised to hear that slapping someone is actually illegal. The simple answer to whether slapping someone is considered assault is yes. The longer answer will be discussed in the following article.
Also, if the person who was slapped was a child and the person who committed assault was an adult, the case will certainly become a child abuse case. One of the only ways that a slap would not be considered assault would be if it was in self defense or in the defense of another person. The other way that it would not be considered assault would be if it was an accident. So essentially, the person accidently hit the other individual. We and our partners use cookies to Store and/or access information on a device. One of the most important aspects of being a softball coach, like with any sport, is evaluating the talent of your team. Just because you would like to have a “slapper” on your team doesn’t necessarily mean that you have a player that can fill that role. Furthermore, unless you are coaching at the college level you should not be forcing any of your players into a role they don’t want. It is important to remember that your primary functions as a softball coach is to help your players grow as individuals and to help them have fun; don’t let your desire to win get in the way of that.

So besides speed, what other attributes should a softball coach be looking for in a player you are considering converting to a “slapper”. If they’re a natural left-handed hitter, that will help speed up the conversion process, as they will have to hit lefty when slapping. You also want players who do not have much “pop” in their hitting, which means they have limited power and hit more line drives than outfield shots. This will allow them to put the ball into play more often, increasing the chances they will get on base. If you are considering converting a right-handed hitter to a “slapper” they will need exceptional hand-eye coordination, but this is not recommended unless you are coaching at the college level. It doesn’t take long to get dehydrated when training in the heat, and if you’re thirsty it’s already too late. Before you head out for your summer training session, So you’ve decided that you want to convert one of your players into a “slapper”, but you’re unsure what exactly that means and you clueless as to which of your players would be best suited for the position. Luckily you’ve stumbled upon this article and the answer to both of these questions will soon be revealed. First it is important to explain what exactly slap hitting is, and why it can be helpful to have a “slapper” on your team.Slap hitting is when a player makes contact with the ball as they’re moving forward, enabling them to more quickly reach 1st base. This means “slappers” must hit from the left-handed batters box, so that they’re closer to 1st and can transition from hitting to running in one fluid motion. They want to get the ball into play on the left side of the field, so that they’re able to utilize their speed to get on base. Often slap hitters are used as leadoff hitters in order to get a player on base and pressure the opposing team. This can be especially effective because your “slapper” will typically be one of your fastest players, and so this puts you in a position to be aggressive and steal bases.Power is also required — getting those tasty eephuses you can bury in the brickyard; the pitches that arise from the threat of the slapper. And there too the Tide has seen a power outage of late.

And, it is no coincidence that in 2019 (54th) and 2021 (39th), when Alabama was able to get on board effectively and snatch extra bases, that it also won the SEC regular season crowns.

What does it mean to slap in baseball?

But it’s also one that’s running less effectively overall, and as a result getting fewer distracted pitchers serving up meat, as well as one that is hitting into a lot more double plays. There simply is no “chaos on the base paths.”

But then in 2018, the NCAA completely changed the rules regarding slappers. I’m not going to reinvent the wheel here; others have done a great job explaining the slap bunt, its changes, and what it means:

Batters are now prohibited from having any part of their foot touch the ground outside the batter’s box when bat-ball contact is made. If the rule is violated, it’s an automatic out.

Just as the lack of a slapper has done damage to the stealing game, it has affected the Tide’s offensive output in toto. Because, the death of the slapper has seen the Tide’s double play percentage skyrocket. Alabama went from from one of the best in the conference (.62) to one of its worst (1.37).

The name of the game these days is power on both sides of the diamond. And until ‘Bama gets on board, then even its best seasons seem doomed to fall short, as it is a team playing softball from a different era against those who are not.
The result was immediate, but was not seen in batting average for the Tide, or total hits: Contact was still being made with the ball. No, it was the lack of chaos; it has simply not been there, or has been at-best erratic. In 2017, the last year under the old rules, the Crimson Tide was second in stolen bases in the SEC. The next year, implementing new slapper rules, Alabama fell all the way to 6th. That was not an aberration. Again in 2020 and 2022, the Tide would find itself sitting at in least middling position in stolen bases and stolen base attempts. From 2017 to 2022, the Alabama offense would go from 37th in SB to 97th.For the better part of two decades, the Alabama Softball offense was predicated on small ball and “chaos on the base paths.” The name of the game was getting contact and moving runners over, forcing tough decisions from the infield, and just good ole’ fashioned manufacturing runs: steals, sacs, bunts, fielder choice noodlers.

Does a slap count as a hit?
Slapping someone involves the physical contact of hitting your hand across another person’s face or other part of their body. The physical contact itself makes the act assault, but it would most certainly be considered assault if there was force in the slap.
And when it works, that small ball approach yields to a lot of hittable pitches and solid contact that can lead to extra bases. This is what it looks like when it’s executed to perfection. 2016 WCWS, Alabama trailing Arizona State 2-0:

Alabama has been an outstanding program in OBP. The Tide have excellent plate discipline and draw a lot of walks. Again, a small ball team has to be able to keep an eye on the strike zone. And, going back to the earliest cumulative statistics I can find, the Tide have never finished lower than 20th in the nation in on-base.Last season, for a small ball offense. Alabama was about as good as you could want to be on paper. It led the SEC in pitching; it was third in BA at .310; it was third in hits; third in drawing walks; third in total bases.

What does slap hitting do?
Reason number two why slap hitting is so beneficial in softball. But as a slap hitter. It’s being able to have options being able to have options is the most powerful. Feeling knowing that you can
What it did not have, though, was power: a deficit that doom the Tide in the postseason. In the same 2018 to 2022, the Tide went from 18th in HR per game to 249th — its highest finish thereafter has been 62nd.

Can you still slap hit in softball?
With first base only 60 feet away from home plate in softball compared to 90 in baseball, the left-handed slap hit is a major offensive tool used in softball.
The game of softball underwent a significant change in the summer when the NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel approved a new rule that overhauled the art of slap-hitting.

Is a slap harder than a punch?
But even if you want to differentiate between slap and palm strike, a slap in the right place can be a dozen times more damaging than a punch.
So, what’s the answer here? We touched on this before Regional play began, but more than a face lift is needed. The offense simply has to modern-up. That requires recruiting for power and coaching velocity hitting: exit angles, exit velocity, bat speed. The upside to this is that as a team, if you have a dominant ace in the circle and can teach fundamental bunting and running, you needn’t compete for star offensive players. Speed, solid fielding, and the ability to make contact matter far more to overall team success. It distracts pitchers, forces bad throws. It keeps infielders focused on where they’re going with the ball next rather than what’s happening in front of them. For example, if there are no runners on the base then the hitter would want to slap the ball into the hole between the shortstop and the third basemen, preferably to the shortstop’s backhand. However, if there is a runner on second base and the hitter wants to advance her to third base. The hitter would then try to slap the ball down the first baseline. This is the farthest distance from third base. Performance: The batter begins with her feet crossed over (in position to slap hit).A coach will be behind the pitching screen and will soft toss balls to the batter.Performance: The batter should begin with her feet crossed over. The tee should be moved around from the outside to the middle to the inside of the plate. The hitter should practice hitting the ball to different parts of the field. She should also practice hitting both line drives and bouncing balls.

Why do batters slap hit?
The slap is a hitting style used to attack a certain spot of the infield. It can be difficult to defend and a good technique to help advance teammates already on base.
For example, to hit a line drive she would have to hit the ball in the middle while to make the ball bounce she would have to hit the top half of the ball. Now, as she is about to make contact, the batter should begin to move forward and out of the batter’s box. As she hits the ball, her hands should stop but the rest of her will keep moving. This will allow her to slap the ball and then attempt to beat the throw to first base. When the pitch is being made, the batter should leave her body in the same position but cross her front foot (for lefties that would be the right foot) back over the back foot (the left foot is now in front).

Then with crossed feet, the batter will take a good solid swing at the ball. She will try to direct the ball to a certain spot in the infield or through the infield. She will do this by stopping her bat at the contact point. This will create the slapping of the ball.Purpose: The purpose of this drill is to get a feel for the body positioning with slap hitting. Also, a player will learn about how to directionally hit the ball using hand path and proper contact points.

The batter will start toward the pitcher as the ball is soft tossed. The coach will call out where the batter should hit the ball and whether it should be a line drive or a bouncer.Throughout the process of this drill, the hitter should begin to understand how and where to hit the ball to make it go to a certain spot in a certain way.

In this article, we are going to take a look at the mechanics of slap hitting, explain how to teach it to youth softball players, and provide some useful drills to reinforce the skills in practice.
This is a great strategy to use when a left handed batter is up at the plate. It works especially well when the left handed batter is a fast runner, has good eye hand coordination, and good discipline at the plate. The final goal of slap hitting is to either hit the ball on a line drive or to make the ball bounce through the infield. If a fast player can slap the ball so that it bounces two times before it reaches the shortstops backhand, that hitter will reach base just about every single time.We appreciate your thoughts! All the best – Gary.A full swing with intent to hit the top of the ball to get the ball to bounce in the air. The air time from the bounce creates time for the speedy slapper to beat out the hit. Slapping is not an offensive skill of finesse only. Rather, a great slapper is a powerful athlete who can hit the ball hard while on the run when the defense is protecting in. A full swing executed with the same grip used for hitting. The object is to hit a hard line drive or ground ball through the infield and into the outfield.Slappers not only slap but, to obtain their highest potential batting average, must also be skilled at executing a running bunt. This is called a drag bunt. And, to keep the outfield and infield defense from playing too close, a slapper must be capable of standing and hitting. In fact, a great slapper can hit as powerfully as a pure left-handed hitter.Fastpitch slapping skills are performed from the left side of the batter’s box. First, the batter gets a running start toward the pitcher while the pitch is being delivered. Then, she strategically places the ball in the infield. Or, she drives the ball hard through the infield. All the while, the slapper continues accelerating to first base. The intent is to hit with high average and maximum potential power, like a right-side hitter or left-side non-slapper. The strategies, fundamentals, and mechanics for fastpitch softball hitting are comprehensively covered in Building the High-Level Swing (click the link to learn more about our new hitting two-book series, covering fundamentals and drills). The slapper has to practice for many years to develop these five fastpitch slapping skills. But having five offensive weapons can lead to an unbelievable batting average, from .500 to .600 in high school, rarely attained by a straight hitter. Click this link for a detailed page about batting average and how to accurately calculate that backs up what we are saying about the potential of slappers.

The Stockton Slap has become part of the Diaz lore. Layer after layer of quotable meme from “wolf tickets” to “don’t be scared, homie” to “209 wut?” The most famous reference to the slap came in Nick Diaz’s 2011 interview with Ariel Helwani before his match with Paul Daley. The elder Diaz seemed anything but keen to do the interview and made it clear from the get go. When Helwani confronted him on this, Diaz retorted that he felt Helwani was an instigator and that where he came from, “people like that get slapped”.

But hold on, the slap isn’t just a stinging invitation to man up and fight. It can be every bit as effective as a punch under some circumstances and in most it is a great deal safer. Watch any Diaz fight and you will notice that the common factor between the boxing of both is that lean back right hand counter. Nick prefers to pressure and work the body, Nate prefers to outfight and counter, but that right hook is key to both. But rather than just wing it like Mark Hunt and wear themselves out every time they miss, both will lazily throw it out, often slapping with the inside of the hand. This is what is often termed “cuffing” in boxing.
Igor Vovchanchyn is remembered as one of the hardest hitters that MMA has ever seen, but coming up in bareknuckle contests he quickly realized that accuracy was key. For his swings he’d use his palm or his wrist, and he would only throw his fists in well set up punches which he felt he had a decent chance of landing cleanly and safely. Even then, Vovchanchyn retired with a number of plates in his arm.But Diaz couldn’t get the reckless aggression he wanted so he used the mean mug, the bicep flex, and finally the slap as an instigator. Notice how the slap, being longer and tighter than a right hook, sneaks through and stings Lawler. Lawler is happy to get punched in the head all day but he clearly lost his composure as he didn’t react to the jab which came straight up the center after this and the scintillating over hand which sent him reeling to the fence. Notice that as soon as Lawler retaliates Diaz is very clearly looking for that drop away right hook over and over again:

What is slap hitting in softball?
Slap bunting is an offensive baseball and softball technique wherein the batter attempts “to hit the ball to a place on the infield that’s farthest from the place where the out needs to be made”.
At its best the slap is exactly what it looks like. It’s a long, uncommitted flick of the hand with a heap of connotations attached to it. If you slap someone in a fight, you might have been doing nothing effective up to that point but suddenly the onus is on them to prove that they aren’t going to just let that go unanswered. A slap is an invitation to put up or shut up. And that, along with Justin Bieber’s Mayweather-trained assessment of Nate Diaz’s as “trash” has us all hoping that he truly is #SoonToBeSlapped. Diaz – Bieber at UFC 200, it’s the only fight that makes sense. There is a good argument to be made for hitting with the palm just for the safety of the fists. When you try to swing a hook in from slightly too far away—unless you over rotate to connect with the back of the knuckles—it is common to end up connecting with the “door knocker knuckles”. Essentially hitting with the balled fingers, not an impact any puncher wants to throw any weight onto.

Then you get to the mysticism. Some martial arts believe that striking with the wide, flat palm causes shock which reverberates through the body or the organ being attacked. You will hear about vibrating palm in Chinese kung fu, some styles of Eksrima advocate slaps particularly to the kidneys for the same reasoning.
For the street application of this, check out the “You’ve been Tango’d” advertising campaign which was hastily pulled as children deafened each other for life with slaps around the ears in playgrounds across the U.K.

In boxing it is popular because the scoring area of the glove is heavily padded, where the inside of the glove is the less padded heel of the palm and below that the scantily cladded bone of the wrist. To see a fighter cuff and hit with the inside of the glove constantly, watch a Muhammad Ali fight or two. They used to call Ali a slapping or slashing puncher because he didn’t turn his hooks over and bring his elbow through, he’d slap opponents with the inside of his glove instead until the rare occasion that referee told him not to.
And that is the other bonus of slapping someone in a sanctioned MMA bout. It’s sort of like when Anderson Silva isn’t able to do anything effective so he starts dropping his hands along the fence. There are still a shocking number of fans who make the connection between “clowning” (a word which every fan and pundit should stop using immediately) and dominating the fight. When Carlos Condit came out and circled Diaz for five rounds in a fight which remains controversial to this day, Diaz mean mugged into overdrive and slapped the cautious Condit around his guard. There are still a shocking number of fans who will use the slap as evidence of how in control Diaz was in that bout. What is worse, a lot of judges will still be swayed by a fighter using these and other “look how hard I’m winning this round” moments in a round when they have done little of any note.Amid all the hype and anticipation for Nate Diaz’s meeting with featherweight champion Conor McGregor, one question towered over all others. “Will Nate slap him?” As McGregor poured on the pressure and the power in the first round and Diaz turned with terrific blows, throwing his palm across McGregor’s chops each time, the question then became an incredulous, “how can he slap?!” To a fight fan it might seem like going to a duel with a wiffle bat instead of a sword. A slap is considered to be a non-threat—if you want to hurt someone, they say, you should ball up your fist and hit them like a man. But there is a lot more to slapping a fool than just slapping a fool…

And Bas Rutten, being one of the few good strikers in Pancrase, will happily tell you about the merits of hitting with the palms. From the time he palm struck Masakatsu Funaki’s nose across his face from above, to the upward palm strikes he used to damage Frank Shamrock while on one leg.
Even in straight hitting, many fighters in the no gloves era of ‘No Holds Barred’ promotions found that they were hurting their hands on skulls and elbows. Plenty of the better punchers in that era opted to wear gloves even before they were made mandatory for just this reason. But open up the hand and bend it back to expose the palm, and you’re taking a stack of tiny, easily breakable bones out of the way of the connection.

But the Stockton Slap had been in action long before that. In arguably the biggest win of Nick Diaz’s UFC tenure, the slap was turned against ferocious up-and-comer, and presumed future champion, Robbie Lawler. Diaz, being the “jiu jitsu man” in the match up surprised everyone by going toe-to-toe with Lawler on the feet, though he ate heavy counters when he stepped in. Instead, Diaz wanted to get Lawler coming in on him so that he could drop away and land the counter right hook which even then was his money punch. Clipping Lawler over the back of the head with this sent Lawler to a hand on the mat briefly in the first round.
But even if you want to differentiate between slap and palm strike, a slap in the right place can be a dozen times more damaging than a punch. You can hammer fist an opponent in the side of the head from the top of half guard all day. But open up your hand and bring done a couple of slaps over their ear and you have a great chance of rupturing their eardrum. On the odd occasion these happen in boxing, the effects on a fighter’s balance and the pain that he feels are immediately apparent. Shinya Aoki uses this all the time, Kazushi Sakuraba used it to open up a clingy Shibata, and Chael Sonnen famously used both hands to box Anderson Silva’s ears while the latter clung to him so that he could not make distance to punch with venom. Aoki in particular has used this technique with tremendous efficiency—despite being a desperately poor puncher, he can hurt fighters enough on the ground to force the openings he wants.Soon Diaz was in Lawler’s head. Just as Nate Diaz got into Michael Johnson’s by pointing at him every time he landed a good punch. The opponent just has to do something to send the message that they are winning the fight. Lawler drove in hard in the second round and walked straight onto the counter right hand which sent him to the mat for the KO. The slap hitting technique in softball has become more prevalent in today’s game as athletes become faster and faster. By utilizing the slap hitting technique, the batter is positioned closer to first base and moving at a greater speed when contact with the ball is made.
