As trivial and ridiculous as it may seem now, my 16-year-old self couldn’t imagine a world without proms, concerts, or hanging out with friends. Nearly two years, three shots and what felt like a million masks later, I look back on the pre-pandemic me with a lot of compassion. She didn’t know what to expect. None of us.COVID-19 is a terrible disease from which no one has escaped unscathed over the past two years. We all have something taken from us. Some, like me, were lucky to escape relatively unscathed. Sure, some of us may have missed our entire senior year, or maybe the weirdest, loneliest college year ever, but we were able to navigate uncertain times without losing the people we loved. However, there have been positive developments in recent months. As I write this, we are on the second anniversary of the COVID-19 lockdown across the United States, and the number of COVID-19 cases and deaths is falling rapidly. Pima County has dropped its mask requirement to February 28 — an earlier date than expected. Now, more states wary of COVID-19 — like my home state of Illinois — are choosing to drop their pandemic-era safety requirements. We’re not over the mountain yet, but we’re getting closer to a post-pandemic future. This is especially true for people who are doing their part by getting vaccinated. It feels like yesterday when we were all sitting in front of our TV screens in disbelief as COVID-19 started sweeping through our lives. I was a junior high student at the time, and I can vividly remember thinking as the chaos ensued: “Are they going to cancel my junior prom?” But, I’m sure all of us in universities with such a strong party culture have heard these words since the pandemic began: “Is it really in a pandemic?” or “Stay home!” Two years later , as COVID-19 truly recedes, health officials like the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say the guilt is unfair to students who did their part and got vaccinated. The University of Arizona reported 242,960 vaccinations administered from April 2021 to June 2021 alone. Shaming these COVID-conscious students for going out is not only unfair but harmful.According to The New York Times, a total of 978,500 people in the United States have died from COVID-19, leaving hundreds of thousands of children without caregivers and families without loved ones. If you can tick the A box after missing parties and hanging out with friends, consider yourself lucky.

Friends, colleagues, officials and veterans are sending their condolences and tributes to the family in respect of her death. She will greatly be missed by everyone.

We ask that you call ahead, to the family to respect this time of bereavement instead of just dropping in or passing by the family home. All official arrangements, will follow at a later date.
