SOLLIQUIN has been a lifesaver! We rescued a dog. If we were not home during a storm or fireworks she would destroy our doors. And if we were home she would drool excessively, pant excessively, and shake excessively. It was very stressful on us, we live in Florida and it storms every day in the summer. We were at our wit’s end. My husband was done fixing doors. We talked to a vet near me, and he had Solliquin. She has been on her second bottle of Solliquin for a few weeks now. Now, when there is a storm she is just relaxing on the floor. She is not following us around, shaking, drooling or panting. We cannot believe it. Last night the storm was really bad and it did not faze her. Not 100% sure what will happen if we are not home. We have been lucky that we have been here. But so far Solliquin is all that we have needed!! I cannot thank the company enough. Thank you again! PLEASE do not ever discontinue this product : ).
The specific cause of a pet’s anxiety may be difficult to isolate, and many anxiety issues occur in combination. The proper approach should be multi-modal.Amitriptyline is a tricyclic antidepressant medication that works, in part, by increasing the levels of the nervous system chemical messengers serotonin and norepinephrine, which affect mood. It should not be used with pets that have diabetes or epilepsy.
No matter which medication your veterinarian chooses, you will also need to put behavior-modification protocols in place to help your dog work through their anxiety.
It’s a member of the benzodiazepine class of sedatives, which work by depressing activity in certain parts of the central nervous system (the exact mechanism of action hasn’t been identified). This is a short-acting medication that takes effect quickly and can be used up to four times a day. Alprazolam is most effective when given at the earliest sign of anxiety, ideally 30–60 minutes before your pup is exposed to the trigger. If this medication is ever used long-term, it should not be stopped suddenly.
How fast does solliquin work?

Sileo is dispensed in a multidose tube as a transmucosal gel. The medication shouldn’t be swallowed—instead, it’s absorbed through the mucus membranes when applied between the cheek and gums. You will need to wear waterproof disposable gloves when handling the syringe and administering the medication. This medication takes one to four weeks to take effect and must be given twice daily. Amitriptyline is dispensed in the form of tablets that are given with or without food. Dogs should be gradually tapered off of amitriptyline if they have been on the medication for more than a week or two.Buspirone is a member of the azaperone class of anxiolytics. This medication requires continued use to be effective, so it’s not helpful for dogs that suffer from situational anxieties like thunderstorm phobias. A quick note: Fluoxetine and Sileo are FDA-approved for use in dogs. The other medications are all human medications, used off-label in dogs. The term off- or extra- label use means that a medication can be used in a way or in a particular species that are not specified on the medication label. Off- or extra- label use of a medication can only be done by a veterinarian who has direct and personal knowledge of your dog and when there are no other appropriate medications for a particular dog’s circumstances. Regardless of the type of medication your dog is prescribed, there are no quick fixes and working with a certified behaviorist or trainer is the best way to help resolve your pet’s abnormal behavior.

Calming treats for dogs can definitely help, since they include ingredients that are intended to soothe your dog’s nerves, so your pup can finally chill out a bit.
And while there are tons of these supplements on the market for you to choose from, it can get really overwhelming trying to figure out where to look — and which brands to trust.Another thing to look out for when hunting for the best calming treats for your dog is the National Animal Supplements Council (NASC) Quality Seal on the label. “Products labeled with the [NASC] Quality Seal meet industry-imposed standards and pass a third-party audit,” Dr. Coates explained. “Make sure you only purchase calming treats made by reputable manufacturers,” Dr. Coates said. “This will increase the chances that the treats are free from potentially dangerous contaminants and actually contain the active ingredients listed on the label.” Clinically proven to work within 30 minutes and last up to four hours. These treats also come in four different flavors, so you can choose whichever one your pup will be most obsessed with. Before starting any new treat or food — especially when your goal is to help calm an anxious pup — it’s always best to talk to your veterinarian, who can help you pick the right calming products for your dog.
In the veterinary world, calming treats are usually referred to as nutraceuticals. “They are nutritional supplements containing vitamins or herbs that help to relieve symptoms of anxiety,” Dr. Murithi told The Dodo. “They usually contain ingredients such as tryptophan, melatonin, Suntheanine, hemp oil, etc.”
The best calming treats for dogs include L-tryptophan or theanine, which are amino acids that work by increasing body hormones such as serotonin and dopamine, which are known to be feel-good hormones, Dr. Murithi said.We reached out to Dr. Jennifer Coates, a veterinarian at Pet News Daily in Fort Collins, Colorado, and Dr. Maureen K. Murithi, a veterinarian working with Doggie Designer, to help you navigate the world of calming treats for dogs and find out which products veterinarians recommend.
In comparison to medications, nutritional supplements are not regulated, which makes it hard to determine which ones are safe and effective. So it’s super important you do your research before making a purchase.
These delicious treats start working within one hour and include melatonin, a powerhouse hormone supplement that works to ease anxiety, restlessness and stress. And since you get 70 treats for a great price, it’s perfect for dog parents on a budget.“While technically not treats, Purina Calming Care (a probiotic) and Royal Canin Comfort Care (a nutritionally complete and balanced dog food) may also be good options for some pets,” Dr. Coates said.
These chewable tablets can be given to your dog or cat for both long- or short-term use, so you don’t have to get separate chews for different situations. If you have small dogs or cats, you can get this option for pets under 22 pounds.According to Dr. Muithi, valerian root is also commonly used in calming treats — and is especially beneficial for dogs with repetitive or compulsive behaviors, such as excessive chewing.According to Dr. Coates, calming treats for dogs can be beneficial in cases of mild to moderate anxiety and in combination with other anxiety-relieving treatments. These daily chews can be used for both dogs and cats who suffer from anxiety, but keep in mind that these work best once your dog has been taking them for at least 30–45 days. While they aren’t ideal for one-off situations (like going to the vet), they’re perfect if you have a dog who’s naturally anxious and needs more constant help. Then, you can slowly increase until you’ve reached the recommended dosage. As we mentioned earlier, the ailment your dog is suffering from can also play a role in how quickly the dog treats become effective. If your dog suffers from anxiety or any other sort of mental issues, you can expect the CBD to start kicking in within an hour or so.CBD dog treats can also help with pain and inflammation. However, size isn’t the only thing that plays a role in the CBD timeline.CBD has exploded in popularity over the last several years due to its reported health benefits. Nowadays, many people are taking CBD to relieve anxiety, deal with chronic panic, and get better sleep. CBD treats may be able to help prevent seizures in your dog. In fact, a study published by the American Veterinary Association found that CBD helped lower the frequency of seizures in dogs that suffered from epilepsy when used in combination with anti-seizure medication. As we mentioned, the package should indicate the appropriate dosage for your dog based on its size. If it doesn’t say anything, we recommend starting your dog off with a few milligrams and then working your way up from there.
So, why should you be giving your dog CBD treats instead of regular treats? Here are some of the benefits your dog may experience from eating CBD treats:The potency of the CBD treat can also play a major role in how long it takes to kick in. Most CBD dog treats contain a CBD concentration ranging from 2 to 20 mg. When deciding how much CBD to give your pet, refer to the product’s size chart and dosing guidelines.
While you may think that giving your dog more CBD will speed up the effectiveness of the product, this isn’t always the case. Plus, giving your dog too much CBD at once can be harmful. For example, a large dog may require a significantly higher dosage than a smaller one.

If the website has a store locator, even better, as this indicates that other businesses trust the dog treat brand enough to sell its products in their stores.
For pets (and humans), CBD may provide relief by acting on these receptors and, therefore, the various processes in the body that these receptors affect.
Unfortunately, not all CBD dog treats are created equally. Therefore, the brand you buy from can have a huge impact on the overall effectiveness of the product for your dog.
As we mentioned, the above timelines are just general estimates. There are other factors that can impact how long it takes CBD treats to work for your dog. These include:
Also, look for companies that have learning resources on their website and information regarding FDA disclosure. Dogs’ bodies (and the bodies of most mammals) contain native receptors for cannabinoids. These native receptors in the brain run all throughout the central nervous system. From there, the receptors influence the workings of our internal systems and organs. Their purpose is to regulate everything from memory to pain tolerance to emotional states to hunger. While scientists don’t fully understand how CBD works to prevent seizures, it’s believed that the chemical prevents nerves in the brain from firing off too much and that it can lower the number of electrolytes the body needs to produce a seizure.
CBD is thought to help dogs calm their nervousness provide them with feelings of calm. Some scientists believe this is because CBD may activate some parts of the brain as serotonin, a hormone that makes us feel happy and relaxed.
Some state regulations restrict a vet’s ability to outright discuss or recommend CBD products with or to their patients. In many cases, it’s the pet owner’s responsibility to bring up the topic of CBD with their vet. We recommend sharing resources and information to start the conversation.

What is a good calming pill for dogs?
Benzodiazepines (Alprazolam, diazepam) The most common drug of choice for dogs is alprazolam. Benzodiazepines are medications that often have a sedative effect on dogs. They have a short half-life and therefore a better used for acute anxious episodes or to complement the effects of fluoxetine or clomipramine.
This can be particularly helpful for pets that suffer from separation anxiety. Dogs with separation anxiety will often pant or bark when they’re distressed about their owner leaving home. By giving your dog a CBD treat, you can help ease some of this anxiety for them.If you give your dog CBD treats for pain, you may notice that after a few weeks, your dog is back to walking normally and moving around like it used to.
However, scientists have discovered that not only is CBD beneficial to humans, but it’s also beneficial to dogs. Many dog owners now give their pets CBD dog treats to help with many of the same ailments that humans experience.
When approaching the topic of CBD with your veterinarian, be honest about why you’re considering CBD for your pet. If you have already started giving your dog a treat or product, consider bringing it with you to your appointment so your veterinarian can better evaluate it with you.
Yet, the chemical offers many of the same benefits that THC does. For this reason, many people prefer CBD to THC. Additionally, CBD is legal in all 50 states, which isn’t the case yet for THC. While laws vary by state, in many states, you can purchase CBD online, making it easy to consume this helpful product.Veterinary medical boards in each state are working on guidelines to provide vets with rules regarding cannabis. Due to this murky environment, some vets still have a limited knowledge on the subject.
Anxiety is one of the most common reasons pet owners feed their dogs CBD treats. Anxiety in dogs can often lead to troublesome behaviors, such as barking, urinating inside, and acting out.CBD dog treats are just like regular dog treats, except they’re infused with CBD. Some pet parents also choose to give their dogs CBD oil or capsules. However, many prefer pet treats because dogs are more open to eating them, as they view them as a reward.
However, keep in mind that research regarding CBD products is still a work in progress, and some veterinarians may not be legally allowed to discuss, recommend or dispense CBD products. Or they may not feel comfortable doing so.
For example, if your pet suffers from separation anxiety and you give it CBD, you may notice that your dog is more calm and relaxed when you leave or return home. If they used to bark and whimper every time you’d leave but are now unfazed by your departure, then the CBD is doing its job.
Generally speaking, you can expect a CBD dog treat to take effect within 30 minutes to 5 hours for anxiety-related issues. If you’re giving your dog CBD for chronic pain, it may take up to 4 weeks for your pooch to start feeling the effects.
If your pet suffers from any underlying ailments, they may be more affected by CBD than the average healthy dog. For example, if your dog is underweight and suffers from a lot of pain, they may notice the effects of the CBD more readily. However, if your dog is in generally good health, it may take a bit longer for them to benefit from the effects of CBD.
However, advocacy work is currently underway to change these laws so veterinarians can more openly discuss CBD in their practice. But, it’s still important to understand the climate in your state, so you’re prepared for the conversation. While not every dog suffers from seizures, they’re more commonplace than you’d think. Studies indicate that as many as 1 in 20 dogs may experience a seizure in their lifetime.
Gabapentin specifically enhances GABA activity, resulting in sedative effects. It reduces the release of excitatory neurotransmitters (i.e., glutamate) and is most commonly used as an analgesic drug for dogs. Use in dogs with anxiety has been limited, but there have been a few studies indicating it may be useful for some dogs, especially if the dog suffers from chronic pain. Gabapentin can work well when combined with trazodone for both acute and delayed anxious events. Gabapentin is particularly useful in cats with stress and anxiety disorders.Trazodone is an antidepressant medication. It is believed to act on serotonin uptake in the brain and has a calming effect. Trazodone typically isn’t used as often as medications such as fluoxetine or clomipramine because it tends to be less effective than medications that affect serotonin levels, but it can be effective for some dogs. Trazodone has a wide margin of safety in dogs but it is best to be used as adjunctive therapy to fluoxetine as the efficacy when used as sole therapy is low.
Clomipramine is a tricyclic antidepressant (TCA) medication. It is typically prescribed in the treatment of compulsive disorders, including separation anxiety disorder in dogs. Many veterinary professionals recommend clomipramine for treating at least some cases of separation anxiety in dogs because it is an effective medication for this condition and tends to be better tolerated by some anxious dogs than medications such as fluoxetine. Clomipramine needs to be given twice daily.

The goal of using these medicines is to get them into the dog before there are any behavioural, physical, or physiological indications of distress. Before we begin, it’s critical to understand that good anxiety treatment for dogs necessitates careful management, behaviour modification, and drug therapy. We have a reactive, fearful pup who we had discussed with the behaviorist may need medication in order to help his behavior be more manageable. He stopped playing with our other dogs and would even get spooked and go hide when he played with us – something he previously loved! After we rule off physical pain our vet recommended these chews due to some kidney issues that other medications may cause over time. We said we’d give them a shot and I’m so glad we did! He is a playful pup again!! My only complaint is they don’t really go past 30lbs in dosage so we just started him on two and said we can always give him double since he’s 60 lbs. 2 chews do seem to work well for him though and we haven’t needed to add more. This may be confusing for others who may think it’s only for small breeds. My cat really likes these! He enjoys getting his ‘treat’ every night, so it’s super easy to give to him. I got these to help with my cat’s anxiety about cars. He’s an adventure cat and goes on hikes with me all the time! And he loves the hikes, but not the car rides. It’s overstimulating for him and his anxiety was too much at times. He sometimes would get so anxious about all the activity going on around the car he would make himself sick! He also hates moving cars passing on our street and would hide until well after the car passed us on our walks. Since trying these, he’s less anxious about the cars. He also just sleeps on car rides to our destinations. Life seems a lot more pleasant for him. I’m glad I gave them a try! I only give 4 stars because I’m also a shelter worker and I can tell you, these aren’t a favorite of every cat, but many do like them. For a complete list of ingredients, click on the ‘Nutritional Info’ tab, next to the ‘Description’ tab, just under the product photos. Most commercial pet foods include baseline vitamins and nutrients, but some may not have the adequate amount to suit your pet’s exact health needs. Like in humans, vitamins and supplements can help support your pet’s long-term health, regulating everything from digestion to muscle growth. Consult your veterinarian to determine the best vitamins and supplements for your furry friend. My 14 y.o. Dachshund loves these and it calms him. He hears thunder and just puts his head back down. The same with fireworks. It doesn’t knock him out or put him in a stupor. Been using for almost a year now. While you may see a response within a few days, the recommended initial administration period is 30-45 days. For optimal long-term results, product should be used in conjunction with behavior modification in consultation with your veterinarian.Solliquin Behavioral Health Supplement for dogs and cats helps support balanced behavior and relaxation and, for best results, may be used with behavioral training. Solliquin is intended for daily use, however the recommended daily amount may be repeated prior to an expected stressful event. Solliquin Behavioral Health Supplement is brought to you by Nutramax Laboratories Veterinary Sciences.Just started giving this to our cats who aren’t getting along. It is pretty impossible to give the treat as it is, because it’s incredibly hard. But it’s very easy to crush, so we do that and sprinkle on their wet food. It’s very effective, but you just need to crush it first. We give 1/4 to 1/2 of a treat. We tried a whole treat and the cats were asleep for hours and hours. If that’s what you want, give a whole treat, but we just wanted to dial it down a notch.
Solliquin has brought peace to our home again. Maddie, our 13-year-old poodle, was up pacing, panting, barking, and grrring all night long. With Solliquin, she is now sleeping through the night and wakes up happy!
These used to be actually soft soft chews but now they are harder and crumbly. We put them in the cats wet food and it’s hard now that they aren’t soft anymore. At first I thought we got a bad batch but the last several bags have been like this. I’m not happy with the change.
so glad i can get this delivered thru Chewy rather than driving to Vets office every 6 weeks. price is great as well on chewy. works well this product for anxious dogs.
My dog has been on these for about a year and a half, in between finding out that he was having ear infections and joint issues. I recently got him some treatment for his ears, and in doing that, decided to take him off the Solliquin because I assumed the ear pain was what had been causing his anxiety. His ears got better, but his anxiety got MUCH worse! A few days of being back on these, and he’s back to his calm, contented self again. He rarely has panic attacks anymore (other than when he has another underlying issue), and they seem to keep him just calmer in general without being too tired. He’s a 16-lb corgi mix and I give him one treat after he’s eaten. I highly recommend these, but encourage patience and also making sure there’s no other issues that could be causing anxiety! They do nothing if he’s in pain and the anxiety is caused by that. Great product! The most recent shipment seemed much better quality than ones in the past, too.If your pet has a medical condition and is taking other medication, we recommend consulting with your veterinarian to ensure that this supplement is safe to use.

…and my dog had been on them for over a year, so I started weaning him off with half a chew a day instead of a full one and he started acting out immediately, so it turns out they were doing something after all. They may not be miracle workers, or a replacement for prescription medication if you pet has more intense behavioral needs, but they level out my sometimes too vigilant two-year-old 15-lb pup, and they’re treat-like enough that I use them as a reward every morning for him coming to put on his harness.
