The playing characteristics of plastics and feathers are substantially different. Plastics fly more slowly on initial impact, but slow down less towards the end of their flight. While feathers tend to drop straight down on a clear shot, plastics never quite return to a straight drop, falling more on a diagonal. Feather shuttles may come off the strings at speeds in excess of 320 km/h (200 mph) but slow down faster as they drop.A regulation standard shuttlecock weighs around 4.75 to 5.50 g (0.168 to 0.194 oz). It has 16 feathers with each feather 62 to 70 mm (2.4 to 2.8 in) in length, and the diameter of the cork is 25 to 28 mm (0.98 to 1.10 in). The diameter of the circle that the feathers make is around 58 to 68 mm (2.3 to 2.7 in).

Most experienced and skillful players greatly prefer feathers, and serious tournaments or leagues are always played using feather shuttlecocks of the highest quality.A shuttlecock is formed from 16 or so overlapping feathers, usually goose or duck, embedded into a rounded cork base. Feathers are plucked from the wings of a live goose or duck, a method which has been deemed cruel by animal rights activists in recent years. The cork is covered with thin leather. To ensure satisfactory flight properties, it is considered preferable to use feathers from right or left wings only in each shuttlecock, and not mix feathers from different wings, as the feathers from different wings are shaped differently. Badminton companies make shuttlecock corks by sandwiching polyurethane between corks and/or using a whole piece of natural cork. With the first method, the cork becomes misshaped after use, while the cork in the latter method changes very little after use. This is because the structure of the shuttlecock is more durable when made with a single piece of natural cork.

The feathers are brittle; shuttlecocks break easily and often need to be replaced several times during a game. For this reason, synthetic shuttlecocks have been developed that replace the feathers with a plastic skirt. Players often refer to synthetic shuttlecocks as plastics and feathered shuttlecocks as feathers’. Feather shuttles need to be properly humidified for at least 4 hours prior to play in order to fly the correct distance at the proper speed and to last longer. Properly humidified feathers flex during play, enhancing the shuttle’s speed change and durability. Dry feathers are brittle and break easily, causing the shuttle to wobble. Saturated feathers are ‘mushy’, making the feather cone narrow too much when strongly hit, which causes the shuttle to fly overly far and fast. Typically a humidification box is used, or a small moist sponge is inserted in the feather end of the closed shuttle tube container, avoiding any water contact with the cork of the shuttle. Shuttles are tested prior to play to make sure they fly true and at the proper speed, and cover the proper distance. Different weights of shuttles are used to compensate for local atmospheric conditions. Both humidity and height above sea level affect shuttle flight. World Badminton Federation Rules say the shuttle should reach the far doubles service line plus or minus half the width of the tram. According to manufacturers proper shuttle will generally travel from the back line of the court to just short of the long doubles service line on the opposite side of the net, with a full underhand hit from an average player.A shuttlecock (also called a birdie or shuttle) is a high-drag projectile used in the sport of badminton. It has an open conical shape formed by feathers or plastic (or a synthetic alternative) embedded into a rounded cork (or rubber) base. The shuttlecock’s shape makes it extremely aerodynamically stable. Regardless of initial orientation, it will turn to fly cork first, and remain in the cork-first orientation.

I got my Jazzminton a couple days ago and immediately opened it to play. It was easy to put together and the gameplay is simple but fun. The gameplay also levels the playing field for all players so it’s easy for anyone to be the best! I lost to my mother but beat my 20 year old sister. This game is truly fun for everyone and easily portable. I used to bring a heavy bags sets to all the parties and backyard BBQs but I’ll be bringing Jazzminton everywhere I go this Summer!! Very fun game, I play this with my friends and they love it. We had some big rallies, definitely gets you sweating. Seems like its good quality. Jazzminton is an amazing game that can be played both indoors and outdoors. It’s great fun for all ages. I play with my friends, parents and everyone loves it! Great game But too high for little kids. It doesn’t lower for height! If your good @ volley ball, tennis & badminton you will LOVE this game indoors OR outside ! My 10 and 8 years old kids play tennis but are not always willing to find out if the tennis court is available. We found this game in a creative toy store but hesitated if it worth the money. After 3 months seeing the game, we still want it so give it a try. I was thinking if we should get only paddles and birdies instead of a set. But as casual tennis players, we though some rules are needed so still get the set. My kids and neighbors’ kids love this! And the orange birdies seemed more manageable for younger kids. We spent 5-10 mins to set it up in our driveway and kids start playing it themselves. All of them agreed that the net is a must or they would not know who scored! They made up some rules, for example, taking turns after one party scored 5.

A hole score of three strokes fewer than par (three under par, −3) is known as an albatross (the albatross being one of the largest birds); also called a double eagle in the US, e.g. 2 strokes to complete a par 5 hole. It is an extremely rare score and occurs most commonly on par-fives with a strong drive and a holed approach shot. Holes-in-one on par-four holes (generally short ones) are also albatrosses. The first famous albatross was made by Gene Sarazen in 1935 on the 15th hole at Augusta National Golf Club during the final round of the Masters Tournament. It vaulted him into a tie for first place and forced a playoff, which he won the next day. The sportswriters of the day termed it “the shot heard ’round the world.”A golfer’s score is compared with the par score. If a course has a par of 72 and a golfer takes 75 strokes to complete the course, the reported score is +3, or “three-over-par” and takes three shots more than par to complete the course. If a golfer takes 70 strokes, the reported score is −2, or “two-under-par”.

Tournament scores are reported by totalling scores relative to par in each round (there are usually four rounds in professional tournaments). If each of the four rounds has a par of 72, the tournament par would be 288. For example, a golfer could record a 70 in the first round, a 72 in the second round, a 73 in the third round, and a 69 in the fourth round. That would give a tournament score of 284, or “four-under-par”.Scores in excess of one stroke more than par for a hole are known as double-bogey (two strokes more than par, +2), triple-bogey (three strokes more than par, +3), and so on. For higher hole scores it is more common for them to be referred to by the number of strokes, or strokes relative to par, rather than as a “n-tuple bogey”.

The name “eagle” was used to represent a better score than a birdie due to it being a relatively large bird. An eagle usually occurs when a golfer hits the ball far enough to reach the green with fewer strokes than expected. It most commonly happens on par-fives but can occur on short par-fours. A hole in one on a par-three hole also results in an eagle.In general, par-3 holes for men will be under 260 yards (240 m) from the tee to the green, par-4 holes will be 240–490 yards (220–450 m), par-5 holes will be 450–710 yards (410–650 m) and par-6 holes will be over 670 yards (610 m). For women, par-3 holes will be under 220 yards (200 m) from the tee to the green, par-4 holes will be 200–420 yards (180–380 m), par-5 holes will be 370–600 yards (340–550 m) and par-6 holes will be over 570 yards (520 m) These boundaries are commonly extended or shortened for elite or non-elite tournament players, who will often encounter par-4 holes of 500 yards (460 m) or more; this is often the result of a normal par-5 hole being rated as a par-4 for them. Some golf courses feature par-7 holes, but these are not recognised by the United States Golf Association.

As of January 2021, a condor had been recorded only five times on a par-5, once reportedly on a straight drive (a record 517 yards or 473 metres, aided by the thin air at high altitude in Denver). Another was reportedly achieved with a 3-iron club (in 1995 on a horseshoe-shaped par-5 hole). In December 2020, a condor on a par-6 was recorded on the 18th hole at Lake Chabot Golf Course in Oakland, California. A condor has never been achieved during a professional tournament.

H.B. Martin’s 1913 book Fifty Years Of American Golf gives a different origin of the term. In an account of a match at the Atlantic City Country Club, Ab Smith is quoted as saying, “My ball came to rest within six inches of the cup. I said, ‘That was a bird of a shot. I suggest that when one of us plays a hole in one under par he receives double compensation.’ The other two agreed and we began right away, just as soon as the next one came, to call it a ‘birdie.'” In 19th-century American slang, “bird” referred to anyone or anything excellent or wonderful. By analogy with “birdie,” the term “eagle” soon became common to refer to a score one better than a birdie.Condor is an unofficial name for a hole score of four strokes fewer than par (four under par, −4). A condor is also known as a double albatross, or a triple eagle. This is the lowest individual hole score ever made, relative to par. A condor would be a hole-in-one on a par-five (typically by cutting over a dogleg corner), a two on a par-six, or a three on a par-seven (which is not known to have been achieved). Par-sixes are exceptionally rare, as are par-sevens. A hole score of one stroke fewer than par (one under par, −1) is known as a birdie, e.g. 2 strokes to complete a par 3 hole or 4 strokes on a par 5 hole. This expression was coined in 1899, at the Atlantic City Country Club in Northfield, New Jersey. According to a story that has been passed down, one day in 1899, three golfers, George Crump (who later built Pine Valley Golf Club, about 45 miles away), William Poultney Smith (founding member of Pine Valley), and his brother Ab Smith, were playing together when Crump hit his second shot only inches from the cup on a par-four hole after his first shot had struck a bird in flight. Simultaneously, the Smith brothers exclaimed that Crump’s shot was “a bird”. Crump’s short putt left him one-under-par for the hole, and from that day the three of them referred to such a score as a “birdie”. In short order, the entire membership of the club began using the term. As the Atlantic City Country Club, being a resort, had many out-of-town visitors, the expression spread and caught the fancy of all American golfers. A hole score equal to the par of the hole is simply called a par. The term is thought to have originated from the stock exchange, where it was used to describe the expected value of stocks. The transition to golf was made by writer A. H. Doleman prior to The Open Championship at Prestwick in 1870, when he reported what had been described by David Strath and James Anderson as the score resulting from “perfect play”.

Golfers are usually responsible for recording their own scores on a scorecard, and could be penalized or disqualified from a competition if they submit an inaccurate one. Scorecards typically share some basic information about the course, including the course rating, the slope rating, and each hole’s par and handicap ratings, as well as those statistics from the different sets of color-coded tee markers denoting different yardage options to the hole. It will usually also have columns listing the overall totals for the first “front/outward nine” holes, the last “back/inward nine” holes, and the entire 18-hole course.Par is primarily determined by the playing length of each hole from the teeing ground to the putting green. Holes are generally assigned par values between three and five, which includes a regulation number of strokes to reach the green based on the average distance a proficient golfer hits the ball, and two putts. On occasion, factors other than distance are taken into account when setting the par for a hole; these include altitude, terrain and obstacles that result in a hole playing longer or shorter than its measured distance, e.g. route is significantly uphill or downhill, or requiring play of a stroke to finish short of a body of water before hitting over it.Recent well-publicised albatrosses include those by Joey Sindelar at the 2006 PGA Championship, only the third in that competition’s history; Miguel Ángel Jiménez while defending his BMW PGA Championship title in 2009; Paul Lawrie in the final round of the 2009 Open Championship; Shaun Micheel on the final day of the 2010 U.S. Open, only the second ever in that competition; Pádraig Harrington in the 2010 WGC-HSBC Champions; Louis Oosthuizen on the final day of the 2012 Masters Tournament, the fourth in that competition’s history, the first to be televised, and the first on Augusta’s par-five second hole; Rafa Cabrera-Bello at the 2017 Players Championship; and Brooks Koepka at the 2018 Players Championship.It is considered an achievement to complete a bogey-free round. Completing four bogey-free rounds in professional tournament play is rare. Examples are Lee Trevino at the 1974 Greater New Orleans Open; David J. Russell at the 1992 Lyon Open V33; Jesper Parnevik at the 1995 Volvo Scandinavian Masters; Manuel Piñero at the 2002 GIN Monte Carlo Invitational; Diana Luna at the 2011 UniCredit Ladies German Open; and Jonas Blixt and Cameron Smith at the 2017 Zurich Classic of New Orleans (a team event). Each of them won the tournament except Piñero, who finished third. Holes are generally assigned par values between three and five based on the distance from the teeing ground to the putting green, and occasionally other factors such as terrain and obstacles. A typical 18-hole golf course will have a total par around 72, and a 9-hole par-3 course (where all holes are rated as par 3) will have a total par of 27. The perfect round (score of 54 on a par-72 course) is most commonly described as scoring a birdie on all 18 holes, but no player has ever recorded a perfect round in a professional tournament. During the 2009 RBC Canadian Open, Mark Calcavecchia scored nine consecutive birdies at the second round, breaking the PGA Tour record.Each game starts at “love,” which basically means zero. From there, the score goes up to 40, which is actually just four points. The scoring progresses from love to 15, 30, then 40, with the winner needing to score at least two points more than their opponent. If the score is tied at 40, the game continues. Winning by one point from this tied position is referred to as “advantage.” If that same player scored another point, they would win, otherwise the game would continue until one player won two points in a row.

The main piece of equipment in either sport is the racquet, or racket. Where a tennis racket has a large head, short throat, and thick handle, a badminton racket has a relatively small head, and the handle is much longer and skinnier than that of a tennis racket.As mentioned, a tennis court is much larger than a badminton court. Where a tennis court is 78’ in length and 36’ in width, a badminton court is only 44’ long and 20’ wide.

• The ball double bounces on one side of the court before it is returned. The player that caused the ball to double bounce would win a point. A point would also be scored if the player managed to bounce the ball in the opponent’s court, but then it bounced beyond the boundaries without being returned.Aside from the dimensions of the courts, the nets are also quite different. In both sports, the net stretches the full width of the court, but a badminton net is much taller. It stands just about 5’ high, where a tennis net is only 3’ high. Both tennis and badminton are played on rectangular, hard-surfaced courts, and both sports involve hitting an object over a net. While they may sound similar on the surface, these two sports are quite different. On the other hand, a tennis ball consists of a pressurized rubber core that is covered with a fuzzy cloth material. It tends to weigh somewhere in the range of 56-60 grams (1.98-2.1 ounces), so it’s significantly heavier than badminton birdies. This means most badminton players loft the birdie over the net or strike it downward while it is still soaring above the net’s height. On the other hand, a tennis ball can be hit in a variety of ways and from numerous angles. Due to the airy and lightweight character of a badminton birdie, shots tend to be lifted and smashed, rather than volleyed over the net. This changes the way players need to maneuver around the court.

In badminton, each game ends when a player reaches 21 points, but they must win by two. From there, the match is decided with a best-of-three matchup, meaning one player must win two games to win the match.

Though both tennis and badminton are racket sports played on a court with specific boundaries, much of the equipment used is specialized for each specific sport.

Birdies are designed to create plenty of drag, which ensures they fly easily through the air in a consistent and predictable way. The end of the birdie has a covered cork tip, which is what actually makes contact with the strings of a badminton racquet. They typically only weigh about 5 grams (0.16 to 0.19 ounces), so they are incredibly lightweight and tend to rapidly decrease in speed shortly after they have been hit. Since a tennis court is much larger than a badminton court, tennis players tend to rely more on speed, positioning, and agility to win matches. Badminton places a greater emphasis on jumping and lunging toward the birdie, with far less running and fewer lateral movements. (That is outside of the Olympics. The Olympic competitors zoom all over the court!) • The ball fails to land within the boundaries of the opponent’s side of the court on the first bounce. The player receiving the ball would win a point.In tennis, the scoring system is a little bit more complex. To win a match, one side must win two out of three sets (other than men’s matches in a grand slam tournament), where each set is composed of games. A set is won when one side wins six games, but they must also win by at least two games.

For starters, a tennis court is much larger than a badminton court. The racquets, as well as the objects you hit with those racquets, are also very different. This explains why tennis racquets need to be so much sturdier than badminton racquets. In fact, if you attempted to return a tennis ball with a badminton racquet, there is a good chance that the shaft would bend or snap!

The differences between the dimensions of the courts, height of the nets, and properties of the objects hit mean that the two sports are played in very different ways.There are fairly substantial differences between the types of equipment and courts used for both sports. • The birdie fails to land within the opponent’s boundaries, the player that was receiving the birdie would score a point. This can occur when the birdie is blocked by the net, if it lands on the same side of the court that it was hit from, or if it lands out of bounds on the other side of the court.
