In the eighties he equalled them with To Live and Die in L.A., one of the most stylish thrillers the decade had to offer.

Watched this film back in the eighties and really enjoyed it, written and directed by William Friedkin, so when I saw it was coming on to blu ray I purchased it on pre order. Watched it again and the story still holds up, maybe a few clichés now but good acting from the cast including Willem Defoe and John Turturro. The picture is a bit grainy in parts but I could put up with that aswell. To Live and Die in L.A. 4K (LA). $29.99Price. Quantity. Add to Cart. Buy Now. Let’s go over this physical media goodness. Where reviews refer to foods or cosmetic products, results may vary from person to person. Customer reviews are independent and do not represent the views of The Hut Group.Probably the last great film by Friedkin. Excessive and super stylish, captures the decade phenomenally. The performances by William Petersen and Willem Dafoe are striking, Peterson as the hotheaded cop and Dafoe the criminal with a sense for art. Wang Chung`s score and Robby Mueller`s cinematography are giving yet more specific quality to this masterpiece where nothing is black and white and all very very shady. When it comes to this edition, the Blu Ray is very filmic and sharp, being a marked improvement to the already excellent DVD included, while the sound quality has an even bigger impact on the Blu Ray. The extras are also excellent and this is a must have edition for people who love this movie and to all who are yet to be introduced to it. Well done Arrow ! Tim and I have taken a look at Kino Lorber Studio Classics’ new 4K Ultra HD upgrade of the classic Joseph Sargent heist thriller The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (1974), which stars Robert Shaw and Walter Matthau. Among other things, it’s a great New York City movie and if you’ve ever wondered where director Quentin Tarantino got the idea for his character names in Reservoir Dogs, look no further. First, though, we have a quick new disc review… Tim has taken a look at Sidney Lumet’s 12 Angry Men (1957) in 4K Ultra HD from Kino Lorber Studio Classics. This is classic black-and-white courtroom drama starring the great Henry Fonda, along with Lee Cobb, E.G. Marshall, Jack Klugman—it’s a real gem.And Tim has also reviewed Bob Clark’s Children Shouldn’t Play with Dead Things: 50th Anniversary Edition in 4K Ultra HD from VCI Entertainment, which includes a new 4K scan and remaster but only Standard Dynamic Range, as well as Nico Mastorakis’s Nightmare at Noon (1988) on Blu-ray from our friends at Arrow Video.

Also today, we’ve gone in-depth on Via Vision’s new Dirty Dancing: Limited Edition Steelbook 4K Ultra HD release, which takes Lionsgate’s already fine remastering work on the title and adds a few more extras via their own exclusive bonus Blu-ray Disc.
Now then, the big breaking news today is that The Criterion Collection has just unveiled their August slate, which is set to include an upgrade of Akira Kurosawa’s legendary Dreams (Spine #842 – 4K Ultra HD) on 8/8, Wayne Wang’s Dim Sum: A Little Bit of Heart (Spine #1188 – Blu-ray and DVD) on 8/15, Bo Widerberg’s New Swedish Cinema (Spine #1189 – includes The Baby Carriage, Raven’s End, Elvira Madigan, and Ådalen 31 – Blu-ray) on 8/22, and Cauleen Smith’s Drylongso (Spine #1190 – Blu-ray and DVD) on 8/29. [Read on here…]Today’s reviews start with Tim’s take on Marquis de Sade’s Justine (1969) in 4K Ultra HD from director Jesús Franco and our friends at Blue Underground.

All right, ladies and gentlemen… we’re back! Thanks again for your patience while we took a little bit of time off here at The Digital Bits last week. All of us here at the site have had a lot going on this past month or so, so we definitely needed and appreciated the chance to recharge a bit. But we’re diving right back into the thick of things today, which means catching you up on all the interesting release news of the past several days.

Now then, the big catalog news today is that Paramount has finally announced a title we first revealed here at The Bits back in December: Mimi Leder’s Deep Impact (1998) is officially set for release in 4K Ultra HD on 5/2.
