The pickelhaube is easily one of the most recognizable helmets in all of military history. First designed by King Friedrich Wilhelm of Prussia in 1842 (and similar to a contemporary form used in Russia), the Pickelhaube saw service in over 70 years of German warfare. Pickelhaube helmets were made famous due to the military prowess of the German soldiers who wore them, leading to their adoption around the world. The militaries or police forces of Sweden, Portugal, Chile, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, and Romania have used or are still using the pickelhaube in ceremonial uniforms.While pickelhaubes may have been worn by many different soldiers in many different conflicts, the process for constructing the helmet was relatively universal. There are 3 main leather parts of the helmet: a front and rear visor, sometimes called a lobster tail, are sewn on to a basic shell. The shell was formed by pressing a piece of steamed leather through a large mould. The helmet was then covered in many layers of black lacquer until it could be polished to a bright finish. The helmet had 2 brass reinforcing trim pieces, one at the front visor and the other a brass spire at the rear of the helmet. The front of the helmet was covered with a large gilded brass helmet plate. Each German kingdom, dukedom, earldom, and free city had its own unique helmet plate.

For the forthcoming sequel, Top Gun Maverick, Cruise switched to the modern HGU-55 helmet, featuring the same iconic stenciling and color design. A number of companies offer replica versions of both of these helmets, but this auction features the real deal. A big virtual auction of genuine movie props will be held next month and one of the items up for grabs is Tom Cruise’s iconic “Maverick” flying helmet used in the 1986 Top Gun film. The Prop Store’s first event in Los Angeles will be a live auction held on August 26-27 and it will include over 850 incredible items from classic movies, including the most famous fighter pilot helmet of all time.As well as the “Maverick” helmet and accompanying oxygen mask, the auction includes a Darth Vader costume from a 1977 promotional tour for Star Wars, along with items such as Sylvester Stallone’s boxing gloves from Rocky, and much more.If there’s one thing Top Gun wants us to take away about Iceman, it’s this: sometimes it may seem like you have everything, but sometimes everything isn’t enough. Iceman is the man, there’s no question, but he doesn’t have the same instincts as Maverick.

What does that mean? Well, for starters, it means he’s one cold told. The only time he seems to smile is when he’s giving Maverick a hard time. And even when he does smile, it’s really more of an arrogant sneer of sorts, the “I know I’m the man” kind of smile.Iceman doesn’t develop too much throughout the movie. He never really makes any big mistakes during training, and he doesn’t really seem to need to learn any big emotional lessons like Maverick does. In a lot of ways, there’s not a lot of depth to Iceman. He’s in the film to be Maverick’s antithesis and antagonist-turned-buddy, and he’s the perfect fit: he’s blond, Maverick is dark-haired; he’s taller, Maverick is slightly shorter; he’s number 1, Maverick is number 2.

Two weeks before graduation, Maverick and Iceman went in the air together on one of their last exercises at the school. As Maverick moved in for a shot, he was cut off by an overly-competitive Iceman, who then found himself too close to fire. Iceman pulled up and away forcing Maverick to fly through his jet wash. The dirty air stalled Maverick’s jet engines and sent him into a flat spin. Maverick was able to eject safely, however his RIO, LTJG Nick “Goose” Bradshaw, was killed.Iceman eventually graduated at the top of his class after Maverick nearly dropped out. The two once again went into the air on their first official mission together and Maverick saved Iceman from several enemy MiG-28s, allowing Iceman to grant Maverick his respect. At the end of the Top Gun his last and famous line “You can be my wingman anytime,” was delivered.

From LT Pete “Maverick” Mitchell’s first day, it was clear that Iceman was going to be a difficult partner to fly with. Throughout the film, both pilots competed with each other for first place, desperately wanting their name on the plaque that recorded the names of the best pilot from each class.Iceman return 30 years after his exploits in Top Gun in Top Gun: Maverick. Over the years, he has risen through the ranks eventually achieving the rank of admiral, and becoming the commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet. He and Maverick maintained their friendship, with Iceman using his authority to prevent Maverick from being separated from the Navy, every time he got into trouble with the other admirals. He also married a woman named Sarah and the two had a son and a daughter. He requests Maverick to teach a group of TOPGUN school graduates, believing he’s the only one to get them ready for a dangerous mission. It’s revealed that he’s dying from cancer that it’s making him painful even to just talk. He and Maverick meet for the last time, with the former encouraging the latter to believe in do not loose hope with LT Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw and believe in his own teaching capabilities. The two bid farewell after amicably arguing one last time over which of them is the best pilot. He dies a few days later: Maverick and the other air flight crew attend his funeral, where he is honored with a missing man formation and Maverick tacks his wings into the casket. His decision ultimately turns out to be right, as Maverick and Rooster do eventually manage to complete the mission and reconcile.

Without it in a sequel, you’re left with a script without a heartbeat. When we see why Iceman has brought Maverick back to Top Gun, to teach Goose’s son, Rooster, and from that, to hopefully learn to forgive himself, it speaks to the power of their friendship, built by respect and time. Iceman looks out for Maverick because Maverick once looked out for him. It leads to the most emotional scene of the film when Maverick meets a dying Iceman in his office. The filmmakers found a powerful way to film around Val Kilmer’s cancer and inability to speak. Maverick and Iceman don’t need words. A look can say it all. There are times, with Iceman sitting at his desk, quietly looking at Maverick, that it almost feels like he is a therapist, being silent as he lets his patient figure it out. Indeed, Val Kilmer wasn’t in the initial plans for the sequel, but Kilmer and Cruise knew that both needed to be included for it to work. In his 2020 memoir, I’ll Be Your Huckleberry, Kilmer wrote about how he fought to be included in the new film. “As the Temptations sang in the heyday of Motown soul, ‘ain’t too proud to beg.’… The producers went for it. Cruise went for it. Cruise couldn’t have been cooler… Tom and I took up where we left off. The reunion felt great.”Producer Jerry Bruckheimer backed up these claims, telling PEOPLE that Cruise said, “‘We have to have Val, we have to have him back. We have to have him in the film.’ And he was the driving force. One of those constantly irritated by his style is Iceman, a fellow pilot whose arrogance and conceited nature clashes with Maverick’s fun, cool demeanor. Iceman takes everything a little too seriously, while Maverick doesn’t take things seriously enough.

The Top Gun films, above anything, are about relationships. It knows, as the best action films do, that all of the fight scenes and explosions in the world don’t mean anything without characters to care about. Watching friends move through life together and romances begin is a part of that, but nothing is more powerful than a film that gives us two people who are opposites but develop a deep bond not based on love or preexisting feelings, but through the circumstances that the films put them in. DoD has undertaken extensive efforts to improve combat helmet designs. The design goal is to reduce injuries and injury severity, while achieving operational needs. However, the goal of this report is to evaluate test protocols. In the following chapters, the extent to which the above goal—of reducing injuries and injury severity—is achieved by the test programs is discussed.

There were also developments in helmet retention systems. The M1 “steel pot” used a nylon cord suspension system, sweatband, and chinstrap, and the PASGT helmet and its variants also used similar retention systems. The MICH, ACH, and LWH helmets switched to a multi-pad and four-point retention system (Figure 2-2) that had better impact protection while providing increased comfort. The U.S. Special Operations Command designed and developed the Modular Integrated Communications Helmet (MICH) as a replacement for PASGT. MICH had several changes, including improved Kevlar aramid-fiber reinforcement, leading to better protection. They also allowed better fit and integration of communication headsets. MICH was adopted by the U.S. Army in 2002 as its basic helmet and renamed the Advanced Combat Helmet. The Marine Corps decided to use a design profile that was similar to the PASGT and designated it the Light Weight Helmet (LWH). New materials are also under evaluation for mitigating the effect of impacts to the head. Both recoverable and non-recoverable energy-absorbing materials are being considered for use as helmet pads. Concepts for decoupling the helmet into a ballistic and impact shell (and using energy-absorbing materials between shells) are also being explored.The Personnel Armor System for Ground Troops (PASGT) was the first helmet to use Kevlar. PASGT refers to both vests and helmets made of Kevlar, and they were used by all military services from the mid-1980s to around the middle of the last decade. These helmets are still being used by some services but will be replaced in the future.

Combat helmets have evolved considerably over the years. This chapter describes the changes in design and materials, from those used in World War I to today’s Advanced Combat Helmet (ACH). One of the key advances was the development of aramid fibers in the 1960s, which led to today’s Kevlar-based helmets. The Department of Defense (DoD) is continuing to invest in research to improve helmet performance, through better design and materials as well as better manufacturing processes.Figure 2-1 illustrates the evolution of U.S. military helmets since World War I. The rest of this chapter discusses the evolution and developments in some detail.

In early usage, soldiers wore equipment made of leather or cloth in an attempt to protect their heads from sword cuts and other blows. When rifled firearms were introduced in the late 1700s, this equipment was found to be inadequate, and its use declined considerably. Over time, the equipment transitioned from providing protection to being an accessory worn for pageantry and unit recognition.In 2009, the U.S. government launched the “Helmet Electronics and Display System–Upgradeable Protection” (HEaDS-UP) program, involving multiple organizations. As of 2012, it was the largest head-protection research and development project within the Army. It leverages multiple efforts—in the areas of ballistic materials (transparent and non-transparent), high-resolution miniature displays, and sensors—to design a modular-integrated headgear system that takes into account the relevant ergonomics considerations.

Novel manufacturing equipment and methodologies also have a role to play in improving performance. The first generation Helmet Preform Assembly Machine is an example of a process that exploited the ability of thermoplastic composites to be locally consolidated, leading to a rapid, automated method of stabilizing and building up helmet preforms. The underlying lesson is that processing should also be explicitly considered as an asset in pursuit of incremental performance gains in head protection materials and systems.The next major advance in helmet technology resulted from a combination of advances in materials and manufacturing processes. A new generation of ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene fibers (UHMWPE) was developed in industry. In parallel, the government funded efforts to address technology gaps that had previously precluded manufacture of thermoplastic-based fibers and matrices for affordable soldier protection systems. The programs focused on developing new technologies, tooling, and hybridization techniques to enable commercially available and emerging grades of thermoplastic ballistic composite materials to be formed into complex helmet shapes. There was participation from the Marine Corps, U.S. Special Operations Command, and the industrial sector. These efforts enabled the development of the Future Assault Shell Technology (FAST) helmet, the Maritime helmet, and, ultimately, the U.S. Marine Corps Enhanced Combat Helmet (ECH). The FAST helmet is significant for its early use of UHMWPE material and its novel design. The HEaDS UP program is designed to include participation from a wide spectrum of Army organizations as well as other services and government agencies. The goal of the program is to provide two different and independently developed concepts of an integrated headgear system and packages of design options as well as guidelines based on manufacturing best practices, lessons learned, and technology maturation. The resulting insight will be used to develop an integrated head, face, and neck protection headgear system that incorporates modular, upgradeable protection. World War I saw a substantial increase in the effectiveness and lethality of artillery, resulting in a new focus on protective equipment, including helmets. The primary threat during this conflict was fragmenting projectiles, and helmets made with steel were introduced for protection in Europe in 1915. Even though stopping a rifle bullet was considered beyond the ability of the helmet materials at the time (due to weight considerations), there were enough benefits to warrant issuing a helmet to all ground troops.

Continued improvement in materials is also leading to advances in helmet performance. For example, ECH delivers much better protection against fragments compared to ACH, due to a shift to unidirectional UHMWPE fiber in a thermoplastic matrix. The shift was also enabled by a new generation of preforms and manufacturing methods appropriate for UHMWPE. While other promising materials have been identified (e.g., copolymers, graphene, and high-tenacity UHMWPE), dramatic weight reduction without a significant loss in ballistic performance has been elusive.The beginning of World War II also saw an escalation in the lethality of ballistic threats, resulting in higher fatalities and injuries. The bullets and shrapnel in World War II had greater mass and higher velocities. As was the case with World War I, soldiers initially resisted wearing helmets. They felt that the 3.5-lb helmet was too heavy, and that it limited hearing, vision, and mobility of the wearer. However, the troops quickly accepted the trade-off when they observed the lethality of the munitions on the battlefield and recognized the protection provided by the helmet.
