Is Grey Goose Triple Distilled?
GREY GOOSE® Vodka is distilled only once to preserve the naturally tasteful qualities of our signature winter wheat. What is GREY GOOSE® Vodka made from? GREY GOOSE® Vodka is made from just two ingredients: soft single-origin winter wheat from Picardy, France, and spring water from Gensac-La-Pallue in France.
As for the flavour? Expect a seriously smooth mouthfeel, which deserves to be sipped over ice or in a dry martini (forgo the twist in favour of a buttery Nocellara olive; the earthier, saline flavours pair perfectly).
Despite using British spuds as its base, this vodka is surprisingly bright and vibrant, with an expressive nose of crisp red apple and hedgerow berries. We’ll never be without a bottle when it comes to making citrus-based cocktails such as the classic cosmopolitan at home. This Scottish spirit is the world’s first blended barley vodka — and it’s possibly unlike anything you’ve tried before. The initial aroma is full-on floral with a sweet, toasted barley backbone.
As the world’s first pure milk vodka, the mouthfeel is creamy and complex. Stir with sweet sherry, tomato juice, Worcestershire sauce, Tabasco and lemon juice for a bloody mary capable of undoing Saturday’s damage.
That’s right, a new era of vodka production is upon us, and character is king. Stored in an iconic hand-crafted Italian glass skull designed by artist John Alexander, Crystal Head certainly looks the part, but how did the flavour match up?The camp is split when it comes to freezing vodka, though it should certainly be chilled (0-4°C is optimal). While freezing vodka improves the viscosity and achieves a richer mouthfeel, you do risk muting the more nuanced aromas.
Exceptionally pure, with lemon peel and peppery heat, this vodka is made for straight-up sipping, but pairs wonderfully with salt-cured fish, including caviar and gravlax.
With countless awards to its name, it’s unsurprising that this Dorset creation won over our expert panel. Nikka set the bar with its Japanese whisky, but this vodka is just as impressive, with a characteristically sweet profile due to the unique Coffey still distillation process.Made with 100% British wheat spirit, 58 & Co impressed with its crisp, citrus flavour and smooth mouthfeel, while a pinch of black pepper adds interest. Top with soda and a lemon twist for an invigorating drink suitable for every season.
A versatile spirit worthy of a spot on your bar cart, we’ll be mixing this in everything from classic vesper martinis and fruitier spritz-style drinks.
Our panel – made up of certified spirits experts and vodka enthusiasts – sipped 20 vodkas neat and then diluted each with water in search of those deserving prime position on your bar cart. Their criteria? Classic flavours of citrus and pepper, a creamy mouthfeel, and plenty of potential for shaking, stirring or sipping straight up.As far as at-home mixology goes, few spirits offer the versatility of vodka. Too often dismissed as a nebulous, neutral spirit destined to be drowned in lacklustre mixers and ice, there’s a world beyond the big-name brands — and we’ve found the best bottles for your bar cart. Our panel described it as “classic, clean, and dangerously drinkable” — perhaps unsurprising, given it’s filtered through 500-million-year-old crystals known as Herkimer diamonds. Casual. Rich and rounded, with lasting bitterness, our expert panel felt this would pair perfectly with sweet vermouth, Campari, and orange peel for a pre-dinner vodka negroni. Previously renowned for its gin, Portobello Road Distillery has since launched an additional three vodka expressions worthy of a space on your bar cart. The Toasted Coffee Bean Vodka makes an unrivalled espresso martini (without the cloying sweetness of pre-mixed blends), while the Calabrian Bergamot Citrus Vodka adds a heady thwack of citrus to cosmopolitans.Bottled in London, this potato-based vodka is complex and creamy, with an intriguing botanical profile of juniper, citrus peel and black pepper. We’d recommend keeping it simple with a vodka martini, though it’s versatile enough for other cocktails, too. Though the name vodka might derive from the Russian voda (or “water”), the origins of the spirit are a matter of contentious debate, with both Poland and Russia claiming it as their national drink. Popular across Eastern Europe for centuries, vodka gained fast ground in the US and Europe after World War II – and has remained a backbar staple ever since. With that said, if you’re going all-out with your home bar cart, it’s crucial to have a selection of highball, martini, rocks and shot glasses to get the most out of your spirit shelf. After all, if it looks good, it’ll taste better. You can’t argue with the science.
This Irish vodka packs a real punch, opening with sweet baked spice, vanilla and plenty of black pepper heat. Like other characterful vodkas, Boatyard forgoes filtration to allow for full-on flavour and a moreish mouthfeel.
Made from Polish rye and purified water, and a distillation process by fire, Belvedere is deliciously smooth with a subtly sweet, floral note. Pair with quality soda, bitters and a wedge of orange to allow the underlying citrus to sing.
As we’ve covered, the birthplace of vodka remains fiercely debated, with both Russia and Poland claiming to be progenitors of the spirit. While the jury is out, there’s no denying that Belvedere is a fine example of Polish vodka-making traditions (600 years, no less).
Another household name, the original Cîroc uses French grapes harvested after the first frost to deliver a vodka that is fresh and refined, with lingering sweet citrus aromas.Made from the finest French ingredients – soft winter wheat and Gensac spring water filtered through Grande Champagne limestone – it’s exceptionally well-balanced with a fresh, herbaceous flavour and a hint of rye. Unlike other new wave vodkas, Silent Pool swerves bold botanicals in favour of a 100% rye blend, resulting in a classic, clean spirit that promises countless cocktail possibilities. The beauty of vodka – unlike whisky or wine – is that, really, you can throw away the rulebook when it comes to glassware. Hell, drink it out of the bottle, if you like (though expect some concerned glances from guests.)Historically, low-quality vodkas would be kept in the freezer to mask the potent alcohol burn, but today – and, certainly, with our recommended bottles – the vodka should be naturally softer and, therefore, can be served straight from the fridge or your bar cart over rocks.
Traditionally made with wheat or rye, more recently avant-garde distilleries across the globe have been experimenting with everything from potatoes, milk and grapes, to create unique takes on the old-school spirit. And though the UK’s thirst for gin appears unquenchable, the market for new wave vodkas continues to grow, with reported sales increases of 19.2% in the first quarter of 2022 alone.
Its beauty lies in its simplicity, so if you’re going to enjoy it in a long drink, we recommend an elderflower or cucumber tonic to avoid overwhelming the more nuanced aromas at play. Corn vodka is a nouveau style of the spirit and a product of the American West. Similar to unaged moonshine but more stripped and flavorless, these vodkas have subtle whiskey notes on the palate, like buttered popcorn and sweet creamed corn. Tito’s and Smirnoff are the most commonly known corn vodkas, and both are American made.
This term refers to how many times the distillate is passed through the still. Each pass further removes congeners and impurities in the spirit, which creates a cleaner, purer and more flavorless product. Multiple distillations reduce the quantity of the liquid each time it’s put through the still, resulting in a higher ABV with each pass. Allegedly, the more times a product is distilled, the smoother the spirit is on the palate. But it’s important to remember that smoothness and drinkability is also contingent upon the quality of the spirit prior to distillation. A poorly fermented, low-quality product will result in a mediocre tasting spirit no matter how many times it’s distilled. This is a buzz word invented by marketing companies to create value and hype for the spirit. While there is no official designation as to what a premium vodka really is, legally or otherwise, the term commonly refers to a spirit’s price point. Any vodka that is priced above $45 is considered a “premium” product. This loose vodka term isn’t found on the label and has no formal or legal definition, but it’s still important to know. More than 70 percent of vodka that’s currently on the market is produced in Europe, in the countries that make up the Vodka Belt, which includes the Nordic states (Finland, Sweden, Norway, Iceland), Baltic states (Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania), Russia, Poland, Belarus and Ukraine. Vodkas are charcoal filtered after distillation to further remove any fatty acids and congeners that remain in the spirit. It’s also believed that charcoal filtration helps remove off-flavors in the vodka to create the purest, best tasting product. Because potatoes have a lower yield than grains, these vodkas are the hardest and most expensive to produce, which makes them less common. On the palate, potato vodkas have a creamy flavor and texture, with a weighty, almost velvety mouthfeel. It’s actually better to leave potato vodkas unfiltered and reduce the number of distillations to create a more flavorful, earthy vodka (Woody Creek is a prime example of this). Commonly known brands are Monopolowa, Luksusowa, Reyka and Chopin. Barley is the least common cereal grain used to produce vodka, and it’s usually blended with other grains in the mash prior to distillation. Vodkas made from 100 percent barley are common in Finland, with brands like Finlandia and Koskenkorva gaining the most popularity and recognition. These vodkas tend to have a slightly sweet, almost honeyed flavor with bready, yeasty notes on the palate. As you sip them, they leave a touch of oiliness on the glass.Wheat is one of the most popular grains used in vodka production because it’s cheap to grow and produces a high yield. Traditionally found in Russia, wheat vodkas tend to have an oily mouthfeel and cleaner flavor (because they contain less congeners than corn or potato vodkas) with an aniseed note on the finish. Russian Standard, Stolichnaya, Grey Goose and Absolut Vodka are all primarily made from wheat.
Is Smirnoff Triple Distilled vodka good?
Smirnoff is the most awarded name in vodka, with countless years of heritage and unmatched quality sold in over 130 countries . It is triple distilled from a blend of different grains and filtered ten times through seven columns of environmentally sustainable charcoal for an exceptionally pure-tasting, smooth spirit.
A neutral spirit is defined as “without distinctive character, aroma, taste or color” by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. By theses definitions, most vodkas are not neutral spirits—even if they aim to be. Everclear and extremely low quality, bottom-shelf vodkas can be considered neutral spirits, and most low-end flavored vodkas start with neutral spirits because they’re cheap to buy or produce.

How on earth do these ingredients combine to make something that’s so delicious? The actual process is pretty simple. The starch, of which rye is the most common, is mixed with water and heated. Yeast is then added to this pulp, which allows fermentation and converts the sugars into alcohol. The next stage is distillation. To test whether the liquid has been distilled to the desired extent and has alcohol present, you put a light on it, and if it doesn’t light up, the substance is too weak and needs to be distilled again. The substance returns to its liquid form when cooled, and then proceeds to be filtered. The final alcohol content of the liquid is 40 per cent.

After that, you may notice some changes in appearance or taste, but it will most likely be ok to drink.
Whether vodka goes bad or expires will depend on a variety of factors, including proper storage. Most alcohol will remain drinkable indefinitely if it is unopened. It’s also unlikely that opened alcohol will “go bad” or be unsafe to drink as its high alcohol content protects it from germs. That said, its taste can definitely be altered. Light, temperature and air can change the way vodka tastes. Keep vodka in a cool, dark place to help preserve its flavor for as long as possible. To go a step further, we recommend storing GREY GOOSE® in the fridge to keep it beautifully refrigerated, ready to mix and perfectly preserved. Flavored vodkas have a shorter shelf life due to the added flavors. It’s best to enjoy these within 90 days of opening. If you notice a strange smell to your vodka, you don’t want to not drink it. If in doubt, throw it out.Much like how you can enjoy the nuanced taste of GREY GOOSE® Vodka by itself, you can also appreciate the taste of our flavored products, bursting with fruit flavor, on its own. You can pour any of our flavored vodkas or GREY GOOSE® Essences over ice for a flavorful drink, but you may prefer to serve it with soda water for a super simple cocktail. The quality of the vodka in your martini cocktail matters, which is why we recommend GREY GOOSE® Vodka. Because a vodka martini cocktail is made from just a few ingredients, the spirits do not have many places to “hide.” You want a vodka that is made without compromise – one that truly shines. GREY GOOSE® Vodka is the quintessential vodka for the quintessential cocktail. A martini cocktail will last for a while in the fridge or freezer, especially since it’s such a spirit-forward drink. Both vodka and vermouth — the two main ingredients in a vodka martini cocktail — are rather long lasting. Vodka will stay good pretty much indefinitely, so it’s the vermouth you need to worry about. Many experts say the fortified wine will stay palatable around one to three months in the fridge, so you probably wouldn’t want to keep a pre-mixed martini cocktail longer than that.
