In fact, the door was opened to a lot of alternative rock that had once been relegated to college radio stations. The combination of heavy-metal riffs and melodic verses on tracks like ‘Enter Sandman,’ ‘Nothing Else Matters’ and ‘Sad But True’ has helped the disc move 15 million copies in the United States alone.

R.E.M. went from college-radio sweethearts to international superstars with ‘Out of Time,’ thanks in most part to its hit single ‘Losing My Religion.’ The song rocketed to No. 1 on Billboard’s Modern and Mainstream Rock charts, while it’s artsy video garnered heavy rotation on MTV. ‘Time’ also featured one of R.E.M.’s most maligned tunes — the poppy ‘Shiny Happy People.’ ‘Blood Sugar Sex Magik’ helped propel Red Hot Chili Peppers from funk-rock fringe artists to worldwide wonders. The disc features the rock hits ‘Give It Away’ and ‘Suck My Kiss’ alongside the crossover smash ‘Under the Bridge.’ The band’s subsequent popularity proved too much for guitarist John Frusciante, who quit the band in 1992 before returning in ’98. Chris Cornell joined forces with his Soundgarden drummer Matt Cameron and future Pearl Jam members Jeff Ament, Stone Gossard and Mike McCready for this tribute to Mother Love Bone singer Andrew Wood, who died of a heroin overdose. Eddie Vedder, who then was auditioning for Pearl Jam, contributed backing vocals on the disc and traded verses with Cornell on ‘Hunger Strike.’Pearl Jam’s debut disc, ‘Ten,’ received little fanfare when it was released in 1991. The album’s title was inspired by the jersey number of NBA player Mookie Blaylock, for whom the group was originally named.Nirvana’s ‘Nevermind’ is not just the top disc of 1991, it’s the most influential album of the decade. At a time when boy bands and hair-metal acts were dominating the airwaves, Kurt Cobain & Co. changed the face of music. With anthems like ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit,’ ‘Come As You Are’ and ‘Lithium,’ the disc took the world by storm and started a musical revolution in the process.

With the eyes of the rock world focused on Seattle at the time, Ozzy Osbourne was still able to make his mark with this 1991 album, ‘No More Tears.’ Ozzy’s guitarist Zakk Wylde co-wrote the music on every track, while Motörhead’s Lemmy Kilmister contributed lyrics to four songs. Highlights on ‘Tears’ include the title track and the hit ballad ‘Mama, I’m Coming Home.’

With Matt Sorum replacing Steven Adler on drums and the addition of keyboardist Dizzy Reed, Guns N’ Roses explored classical instrumentation and more melodic sounds on two of the top albums of 1991, the simultaneously released albums ‘Use Your Illusion I’ and ‘II.’ While Axl Rose & Co. still got down and dirty, ballads ‘Don’t Cry,’ ‘November Rain’ and ‘Estranged’ were among the biggest hits on the discs.After dominating the ’80s with epics like ‘War’ and ‘The Joshua Tree,’ Irish rockers U2 took a dramatic turn on their 1991 album, ‘Achtung Baby.’ The band introduced dance beats and electronic music to its sound with tunes like ‘The Fly’ and ‘Mysterious Ways.’ But it is the beautiful ballad ‘One’ that has become the disc’s signature song and a staple of the group’s legendary live shows.

Following two modestly received albums in the ’80s, Soundgarden broke through with ‘Badmotorfinger’ on the heels of the grunge craze in the early ’90s. The album, powered by Chris Cornell’s massive vocals and the band’s heavy brand of guitar rock, features the singles ‘Outshined’ and ‘Rusty Cage.’ After breaking up in 1997, the band reunited last year.

Andy Samberg’s character in the film Hot Rod, pays tribute to Hammer’s hand gestures from the music video, with his explanation of no longer being “legit” so he must quit.

Hammer set out on a world tour for Too Legit to Quit, but the stage show had become as lavish as his lifestyle. Too Legit to Quit World Tour began with two sold out concerts in March 1992, at the 50,000 capacity Tokyo Dome. Capitol Records was prepared to allow the tour to continue for at least two years, although it ultimately would run for slightly less than that. Loaded with singers, dancers and backup musicians, the supporting concert tour was too expensive for the album’s sales to finance. Therefore, it was canceled partway through.The large-scale advertising campaign and world tour indicated that Capitol Records was expecting Too Legit To Quit to replicate or exceed Hammer’s previous successes, and were strongly supportive of his career. Given the recording and promotional costs in relation to music sales, Too Legit To Quit was not likely as profitable as Hammer or Capitol Records may have hoped. However, ticket and merchandise sales for Hammer’s Pepsi and MTV-sponsored world tour likely generated massive exposure and millions of dollars in revenue, thus allowing Hammer to sustain his reputation as a very popular performer.

Too Legit to Quit is the fourth studio album by Hammer (after removing M.C. from his name), released on October 29, 1991. Produced by Hammer and Felton Pilate, the album was released via Capitol Records and EMI Records.

In 1992, Boyz II Men joined Hammer’s high-profile 2 Legit 2 Quit Tour as an opening act. While traveling the country, their tour manager Khalil Roundtree was murdered in Chicago, and the group’s future performances of “It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday” were dedicated to him. As a result of this unfortunate experience, the song would help advance their success. Other opening acts for the tour included Jodeci and Mary J. Blige.

A compilation album of music videos from this album were released on VHS in 1992 and DVD in 2002, entitled M.C. Hammer: 2 Legit – The Videos (102 minutes).Prior to Hammer’s next album The Funky Headhunter, rumors from critics and fans began claiming Hammer had quit the music and entertainment business, or had suffered a financial downfall. Although a couple of years had passed between the two records, Hammer denied this “fallacy” at the time. The introduction to the extended-play music video for “2 Legit 2 Quit” addressed the fact that Hammer must have quit (with Jim Belushi as a newscaster announcing it in a comical way), until Hammer shows up late to a concert dancing and rapping to the hit song.Too Legit to Quit has been certified silver in the UK by the British Phonographic Industry, and triple platinum in the US by the Recording Industry Association of America. The album sold more than 5 million copies.

Hammer appeared on The Wendy Williams Show on July 27, 2009. He told a story about a phone call he received from Michael Jackson, regarding the portion of the “2 Legit 2 Quit” video that included a purported Jackson, giving his approval and inclusion of it. He explained how Jackson had seen the video and liked it, and both expressed they were a fan of each other. Hammer and Jackson would later appear, speak and perform at the funeral service for James Brown in 2006.

“2 Legit 2 Quit” proved to be successful in the U.S. as a Top 10 hit, peaking at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100. Another hit came soon after with “Addams Groove”, which appeared on both The Addams Family motion picture soundtrack, and the vinyl and cassette versions of 2 Legit 2 Quit). It reached No. 7 in the U.S. and No. 4 in the UK. Despite the album’s multi-platinum certification, the sales were one-third of those of Please Hammer Don’t Hurt ‘Em.

The single sold a massive 673,000 copies in a matter of weeks and remains the only song to hit the festive top spot twice, having first done so in 1975.

The track set – and still holds – a record for the longest run at the summit on the Official Singles Chart. Co-written by Adams for the film Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Everything I Do… sold 1.43 million copies in the UK, according to Official Charts Company data, to finish as the year’s best-seller. The song also ranks as the UK’s 15th best-selling single of all time.

In third is Cher, who landed her first Number 1 single that year with The Shoop Shoop Song (483k), taken from the film Mermaids. London brothers Right Said Fred are fourth with their debut smash I’m Too Sexy (470k), and The Simpsons (specifically Bart) round out the Top 5 with Do The Bartman (430k). The new jack swing track became the first song by cartoon characters to hit Number 1 in 22 years, since The Archies’ Sugar Sugar in 1969.
