So if you’re looking to start modifying your vehicle, a cold air intake would be a good place to start.As its name implies, a cold air intake improves your engine’s performance by giving the engine cooler air. The stock air intake is usually close to the engine where the air is pretty hot. A cold air intake is farther away from the engine which allows it to serve cooler air to the motor. Does intake manifold affect performance?
Intake manifolds distribute the air-fuel mixture amongst the individual cylinders. They are an important component for increasing performance and efficiency whilst simultaneously reducing pollutant emissions and consumption.
We often refer to the cold air intake as the “gateway mod”. It’s usually the first mod people attempt to add to their vehicle because of its relatively low cost and ease of installation. With the right cold air intake kit, you can add a decent amount of power for what the kit costs.

There is also an emerging market to “retrofit” newer fuel injected engines with a carburetor so the engine can be used in an older vehicle, a street rod or even a racecar.
When the intake valve slams shuts, the momentum of the incoming air hits a roadblock, and a pressure wave rushes backwards through the intake port and runner. A longer intake runner tends to keep the air moving in the right direction in spite of the reversionary pressure pulse that is trying to push it backwards.

Can you put a vq35hr intake manifold on a vq35de?
-Short answer is no.
In recent years, the popularity of stroker kits combined with the availability of larger and larger displacement aftermarket engine blocks has created a whole new generation of monster-sized motors. We’re now seeing small block Chevys with displacements over 427 cubic inches, and big block Chevys with displacements well over 600 cubic inches. Consequently, performance intake manifolds that were designed for small block and big block motors of a decade ago may not have enough plenum area and runner volume to keep up with today’s extreme engines.Stock intake manifolds are often a compilation of compromises. Stock manifolds are typically designed to minimize manufacturing cost, to accommodate emissions fittings, to fit a tight engine compartment with limited hood clearance, and to provide good low- to mid-range performance, fuel economy and emissions. Most stock engines spend 95% of their running time between idle and 3,000 rpm, with rare bursts above 5,000 rpm.But if an engine has a longer duration camshaft, stiffer valve springs, bigger cylinder heads and gearing for revving to 7,500 to 8,500 rpm or higher, an intake manifold with an open plenum, single-plane or “360 degree” configuration is usually the best choice. Opening up the plenum allows all of the cylinders to pull from all the barrels in the carburetor or throttle body for more airflow at higher engine speeds. This makes a significant improvement in mid-range and high rpm power, but may sacrifice some low-end throttle response and torque. Even so, a well-designed single-plane manifold will almost always outperform a split-plenum dual-plane manifold from 2,500 rpm and up.This design, though wearing the “stock” label, isn’t necessarily bad. A performance manifold that is designed for a street application will often retain the split-plenum or dual-plane design for this same reason. These types of manifolds can be a good choice for heavier vehicles with automatic transmissions, stock gearing and engines that won’t rev much beyond 5,500 to 6,500 rpm.

Consequently, if the engine is modified with a hotter camshaft, larger carburetor or throttle body, and/or bigger heads, the stock manifold will usually run out of air above its original design speed and hinder power rather than build power.One manifold manufacturer said for maximum high rpm performance, the plenum volume should be equal to or greater than the engine’s displacement in cubic inches — especially on a stroker motor.

How much HP can a VQ35DE handle?
The VQ35DE in the 2003 Nissan 350Z generates 287 flywheel horsepower or approximately 244 horsepower to the wheels. Boosted, the factory engine can hold up to 400 wheel horsepower before reliability and durability become compromised.

The Ported Upper Plenum is one of the best ways to increase your VQ’s power. This part will work on both VQ35DE and Rev-Up engines. With the installation of this part, we have seen gains of 4-6hp! For ANY VQ35DE build, this is a critical piece to making more horsepower!Since adding power under the hood would have to wait, power was added to the interior instead. A Swiss Audio competition sound system filled the cargo area, adding five amplifiers and three subwoofers. Four midrange drivers and a pair of tweeters produce the mid and high frequencies in the cabin. This 4,000 watt system centers on a Kenwood GPS/multimedia head unit. Once the performance aftermarket had identified the VQ35’s weak links and developed the right products to make 1,000+ wheel horsepower a reality, Chris looked for the right shop to make it happen. Local engine builder Lightspeed Performance began work on the VQ35. The cylinder heads were ported before upgrading the valvetrain with +1mm valves, springs and titanium retainers from Ferrea. TOMEI POWERED 264-degree camshafts were selected to orchestrate valve events. The shortblock was sent to AEBS to receive its newly-developed big displacement kit. AEBS re-sleeved the block, bored and honed the cylinders, then filled the block with 100mm 8.5:1 compression pistons. The big bore pistons were connected to the 90mm stroker crankshaft by AEBS forged connecting rods. Significant upgrades support the enlarged VQ’s thirst for fuel. A dual Walbro 255-lph in-tank pump system draws VP Racing C16 from the tank and sends it to a set of PowerLab fuel rails. These billetaluminum fuel rails feature greater capacity to ensure that the RC Engineering 1,600 cc/min fuel injectors receive ample fuel, especially at higher duty cycles. Equalizing fuel distribution across each individual injector and preventing fuel starvation required the addition of a fuel return system. A Mallory adjustable fuel pressure regulator ensures proper pressure in the rails.

With lofty horsepower goals in mind, simply upgrading the pistons and rods would be just part of the plan. Increasing the bore and stroke would be essential for maximizing response with the big turbos. An AEBS large bore stroker kit complete with 100mm pistons and a crankshaft with a 90mm stroke increase the displacement to 4,241cc, an 21 percent increase over the factory specifications. AEBS ductile-iron sleeves reinforce the block to accommodate the 100mm pistons while increasing the block’s strength to contain the increased cylinder pressures necessary to reach over 1,000 horsepower.
While the build took six years and $150,000, Chris can’t help but beam with satisfaction. The Z finally embodied his vision, delivering on every level. He comments, “A great deal of time, money and effort were invested with the goal of being the cleanest, most technically-advanced 350Z around. From the custom metal wide body to the stroker engine and custom turbo system, no part of this car’s design had been overlooked. What sets this machine apart is the team of guys and girls that have given all they have to make it come together.” Just before press, Kazuhiko “Smoky” Nagata of TOP SECRET Japan and this 350Z just happened to be in Houston for the Anime Matsuri 2010 show. Smoky gave this 350Z the thumbs up and called it the best engineered car at the show. Coming from Smoky, that meant the world.To accommodate the sloping hood line, the factory intake plenum of the VQ35DE offers less plenum volume to the first two cylinders compared to the other four. To equalize the air charge reaching the cylinders, a Cosworth aluminum intake plenum takes its place atop the VQ35DE. The Cosworth intake features a dual-plenum design that delivers the air charge to each cylinder equally, while velocity stacks accelerate the airflow toward each intake port. Cosworth states that improvements in both midrange torque and top-end power can be realized.To support four-digit horsepower figures, significant improvements to fuel delivery and engine management became necessary. Twin fuel pumps supply a six pack of RC Engineering 1,600 cc/min fuel injectors with VP Racing C16 race fuel. A ProEFI Pro48 EMS dictates boost pressure, fuel delivery and ignition timing. Tuned by Jason Siebels on a Dynojet 248 Dynamometer, the Z33 reached its goal, putting down 1,011 horsepower and 876 lb-ft torque to the wheels at 32 psi of boost pressure. Compared to the typical 244 wheel horsepower that a stock VQ35 generates, this twin-turbo 4.2-liter VQ delivers over four times the stock power to the wheels. Since purchasing the 350Z in 2003, making over 1,000 horsepower was the performance target. A lofty goal for any brand new engine platform. However, rather than spending his own money to finance the developments of the VQ35, Chris planned to wait a few years to see what products and technologies worked and which didn’t. While horsepower-hungry builders usually start under the hood and build their way to the exterior, Chris did just the opposite and probably saved himself thousands of dollars. One thousand horsepower. Only an elite few can claim to this performance milestone. Even fewer can make this claim from behind the wheel of a fully-streetable Nissan 350Z. While a number of “pure drag” cars have achieved the “1KWHP” figure, most sacrifice the response needed to make the car fun to drive on the street. Chris Shively’s plan for his project 350Z didn’t include compromise. Instead, this second-generation car fanatic would set out to build a Z33 that would impress performance, show and car audio enthusiasts.Engineers design motors with a margin of durability beyond the intended horsepower capability for reliability. However, this margin disappears quickly when adding forced induction to a normally-aspirated engine. Shortly after finishing the block, Lightspeed closed its doors, prompting a search for a new tuner capable of seeing the VQ35 to completion. Chris chose Intense Power (IP) of Gilbert, Arizona to complete the project. IP had already devised a plan for twin top-mount turbochargers, but there was a catch. Chris insisted that the A/C and power steering had to be retained. Relocating the accessories first, IP designed a custom bracket to move the A/C compressor out of the way, while the adaptation of the electronic steering system from a Toyota MR2 eliminated the need for the power steering pump. With plenty of space now available, PowerLab (PL) fabricated stainless-steel manifolds that positioned the GT37R turbochargers behind each headlight so that the compressors could draw in cool air from inlets behind ducts in the bumper.
Stealer Seeking a subtle and complementary improvement to Z33’s body lines, a WALD aero kit added distinction to Chris’s Z. A hands-on enthusiast, Chris performed some of the work with a local body shop to cut and weld the fenders, increasing the width of the Z33. The end result is a one-off wide-body that looks factory fresh. To fill the wider fenders, a set of 19×11-inch iForged wheels occupy the fronts while 20×13-inch rollers take the rears. The wheels carry NITTO INVO tires (285/30R19 in front, 345/25R20 in back) to put down a serious contact patch with the pavement. Massive StopTech calipers (six piston fronts, four piston rears) and larger-diameter, two-piece rotors bring this hard charging missile to a stop fast.

If the manifold is on an engine, and the engine has an idle misfire, rough idle, runs lean or lacks normal power, the manifold may be sucking air somewhere. Check the gasket or sealer between the upper and lower halves of the manifold and the intake manifold gaskets where the manifold mates with the head. Also, check all vacuum connections and hoses that could be allowing unmetered air into the engine. If no obvious leaks are found, the manifold may be cracked.

We recommend an A/F tuning on Forced Induction vehicles (turbo and supercharged) after installation of the SSV in order to maximize power and overall engine reliability. Tuning is generally not needed in Naturally Aspirated ( NA ) applications.

We improved greatly upon the factory plenum designs. The factory lower plenum creates MANY dips and turns which do not promote good airflow and create turbulence inside your factory intake. We developed a straight shot design, eliminating the twists, turns, and obstructions. We then took each runner and also added velocity stack inlets to each individual runner for even better performance.

Getting ready for boost and what a gem to have. Perfect fit, the only issue is that if your an automatic 5AT, it blocks access to the the transmission dipstick. This is going to be perfect for high boost. Will edit comment after turbo install and tune.
Kits using the Garrett GTX3582R mated to a wastegate, BOV and custom exhaust with a fast road map should provide around 400bhp of power on stock internals.

Adding an intercooler is also a good idea on a turbo setup as the intake charge gains quite a bit of heat running through the turbo as it’s compressed.

Fitted to everything from the sporty Nissan 350Z to Renault Espace people carriers it is a versatile design and there are many aftermarket parts available for it.Typical stage 2 mods often include: high flow fuel injectors, Fast road cam, induction kit, Sports catalyst & performance exhaust, Ported and polished head, fuel pump upgrades.The stock crank is known to hold 1000+ hp, and the oiling system must be upgraded with higher rpm and hp aplications. porting on the lower intake and plenum spacers help.Longer valve durations can alter the power band and on most engines the exhaust and intake durations do not need to match, although most cams and tuners use matched pairs there are some advantages to extending the intake or exhaust durations. The 2007 revision, as fitted to the 350Z version had a different ECU, internals were adjusted slightly and benefited from CVVTCS on the exhaust cam in addition to the intake. The intake Plenum was also revised. It is possible to get other engines to hit the 300bhp figure but it will have a different torque curve and power curve to the 2005 VQ35DE. Typical stage 3 mods often include: Twin charging conversions, Competition cam, Engine balancing & blueprinting, Internal engine upgrades (head flowing porting/bigger valves), Adding or Upgrading forced induction (turbo/supercharger), Crank and Piston upgrades to alter compression.Engine management is generally best left to an aftermarket ECU, and fuelling and timing is critical when running a turbo so make sure you go to someone with experience in setting these up.

But if your exhaust pipe is too large, ie: over 2.5 inches bore, you will lose a great deal of the exhaust flow rate and end up losing power and torque. (In some cases, like with Nissan ECU, the factory ECU is locked flashing is not an option, so an aftermarket ECU is the route to take, and many of these will outperform factory ECU’s but make sure it has knock protection and that you get it setup properly.) The 370Z 6MT engine has been swapped into a 350Z and works quite well, this engine has the rev up on down change feature, which was a great addition to a car, but we quite like to do this ourselves, it’s taking the fun and skill out of driving in our opinion!A twin turbo using smaller GT2871R turbos worked really well with 1000cc injectors, and the twin turbos helped reduce the low end lag you get with larger single turbos. But this 800 hp version required extensively revised internals (Pistons, Rods Camshafts and heavy duty ARP studs) which gave a lower compression and were stronger.Some of our members recommended the following aftermarket ECU’s from their projects. You’ll generally find harnesses available now for most of the aftermarket ECU options for these engines.The CVVTCS system keeps the valve durations shorter at lower engine speeds and can alter both lift and duration. Does intake manifold increase horsepower?
The latest “improved” manifolds can often generate an additional 20, 30 or even 50 or more horsepower on many of these larger displacement engines compared to what was possible using an older manifold design. Runner length also affects the rpm range where an engine makes the most power.

The camshaft profile plays a big part in the engines power output so camshaft upgrades make quite a large difference. The intake and exhaust durations will alter depending on the chosen camshaft profile, so large power band gains are on offer for camshaft upgrades.

I have a 2014 infinity Qx60 that I am currently putting a exhaust on with bigger cats and down pipe from flow master and a muffler with a piggyback ecu by bulldog and Spector intake. Should I do a manifold with exhaust and tune up and 600cc fuel injectors and fuel pump. My goal is around 450bhp later I wanna put on a supercharger with 8psi but if the engine can handle it. That is all being tested at my local infinity dealer. Pressure test and a full go over. Just need ideas for 2022 tax time project. Should I work on suspension and wider tires, like the ones on the BMW X5 M series??! Need pointers on who to buy stuff from if possible. Keep in mind tho it is my daily and I tote 6 kids in it. Just wanna be that cool soccer dad with an unexpected family car. Like an infinity track/trail hawk edition.. lol wheather u choose off road applications or street, I wanna see what it would look like. Might make the local Bentley guy take a second look at it.. Carbon build up in the head, particularly around the valves which will sap power or create flat spots, this is a larger issue on direct injection engines but should be looked out for on all engines. We have tips on removing carbon build up.
Head gaskets are different and the third generation water flow are spread across the head, whereas first and second generation were located on the left cylinder.

Keep an eye on the oil consumption, piston ring and cylinder wear is exacerbated by poor quality fuel resulting in blow by. The later VQ35DE has oil consumption issues. Dealers have been replacing oil rings in bad cases but poor quality fuel and skipping maintenance causes this issue.
The engine is closely related to the VQ35AE and the VQ35DE-R had slightly more power but Torque was lower. The VQ35DE was tuned by Nismo and made 296hp at a higher 7200rp, rev range. This NISMO tuned engine had the S1 badge and was installed in the Fairlady Z S Tune GT.

CAMS will generally increase your peak powerband but if you get a cam with larger lobes you’ll need to machine out the head. The C9 cams are a good example of this and the lifter bucket hole and head near the cam need to be ground away to allow clearance.Typical stage 1 mods often include: Panel air filters, drilled & smoothed airbox, Intake manifolds, Sports exhaust header/manifold, Remaps/piggy back ECU, Fast road camshaft.

How much HP can a VQ35DE make?
There are many variants of the VQ35DE offering power outputs ranging from 240hp to 300hp. Block design was similar to the VQ30DE but had variable valve timing and a low friction intake with molybdenum coated pistons.
