The United States has one of the biggest road networks in the world, and it also has one of the highest rates of drivers. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that the United States also has the largest number of car accidents in the world. In 2018, the United States had more than two million motor vehicle accidents. It led to more than three million injuries and more than 37,000 deaths. In addition to having the largest network of roads, the United States is also the second largest consumer of automobiles. Because there are so many people who drive in the United States, and because there are so many miles of roads, the United States also has a very high rate of motor vehicle accidents.

The United States has more than four times the number of car accidents of any other country in the world. The country with the second most motor vehicle accidents is Japan. Japan has close to 500,000 car accidents per year. The most recent year for which there is data is 2018. This resulted in the deaths of close to 4,700 people and more than 600,000 injuries. Even though this is a large number, it is far behind the United States. Japan has the third-most cars in the world, and it has the sixth-largest network of roads. Therefore, it is a significant consumer of motor vehicles, and there are a lot of drivers in the country.

There is a saying that a car accident is more likely to happen when you do not expect it. Even though it is true that a car accident can happen at just about any time, it is also true that there are several common causes of car accidents. Even though there has been significant pressure to reduce the rates of drunk driving, it is still one of the most common causes of car accidents in the world. Some of the other common causes of car accidents include a lack of maintenance, bad weather, distracted driving, and driving while tired. But before you get started, make sure you understand your state’s insurance requirements. Insurers are likely using a variety of factors to determine car insurance premiums, like laws related to insurance coverage, age, gender, type of car, location, crime rates, and individuals’ driving records. That means that we can use premiums to help get a handle on how risky insurers think it is to have a car in a particular state. There are two ways to look at fatal car accidents by state: gross or per capita. The first is simply a raw total of the number of deadly car crashes, while the second reveals the rate at which these kinds of accidents happen.Vermont led the pack with a decrease of 36.23%, but New York had the greatest decline in absolute numbers. There were 193 fewer fatal crashes in 2019 than in 2009 in New York. It’s unclear what led to the decrease in accidents, though it seems unrelated to population change. This is likely because insurance agencies use a mosaic of factors when deciding how much to charge in premiums. Though traffic fatalities might be in the mix, there could be other components that would influence rates. States with larger populations are going to have more accidents because there are more people, but that might not necessarily translate into a higher accident rate. Let’s take Wyoming as an example. Wyoming is the least-populous state in the union, with a total population of 578,759. There were 120 fatal car accidents in Wyoming in 2019, with a per capita rate of 0.02073% of deadly accidents. That translates into 20.73 fatal car accidents per 100,000 people in Wyoming in 2019 — the highest rate in the nation.Oregon had the largest percent change, while California had the biggest increase in raw total crashes. Similar to the list of states with decreases, population change doesn’t seem to be strongly correlated with an increase in accidents.

One thing to note: The District of Columbia was omitted from the rankings because it’s technically not a state. If it were, D.C. would have the lowest gross and per capita fatal car accidents out of any state. In 2019, there were only 22 deadly car crashes, with a rate of 0.00313% accidents per capita. That means for every 100,000 individuals living in D.C., 3.13 were involved in a fatal car accident in 2019.

According to our study, Massachusetts was the safest state for drivers and South Carolina was the most dangerous. Read on to see where your state falls on the list.To find out which states had the best and worst drivers, we combined data for each state on average monthly car insurance premium, the number of people killed in car accidents every year, the total number of fatal crashes every year, and the alcohol-impaired driving fatality rate per 100 million vehicle miles traveled. The table that follows shows the rankings for each state in the main categories used in this study. In our rankings, lower is better. For example, Massachusetts is the overall safest state for drivers. It has the eighth-cheapest insurance cost, and it has the second-lowest number of accident-related fatalities and second-lowest number of fatal crashes. Massachusetts has the fewest number of alcohol-related traffic fatalities out of all 50 states. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s latest data show there were 33,244 traffic fatalities in the United States in 2019. The most common type of accident involved another motor vehicle, followed by collisions with fixed objects.

To identify the states with the best and worst drivers, we analyzed all 50 U.S. states using the criteria below. States were given a score for each factor. Scores were combined and states were then ranked by final scores.By contrast, California has 8.39 fatal car accidents per 100,000 people. Even though California has more deadly accidents overall, you’re less likely to experience a fatal crash in California than in Wyoming.

Between 2019 and 2021, the number of vehicle miles traveled in the U.S. dropped by 3%, according to The Road Information Program (TRIP), a nonprofit organization that studies surface transportation issues. The city, which is located in the southern San Jauquin Valley, also is rated the No. 11 riskiest city overall, based on our analysis. U.S. News & World Report commissioned a study of the 50 largest U.S. cities to determine which are the safest and riskiest for drivers. The study looked at data on fatal auto accidents per capita in each city from 2016 to 2020. It also looked at the number of people per capita involved in fatal crashes in each city during that same time frame.Each factor was ranked by indexing the values. The top-ranked value received a value of 100; the lowest-ranked value received a value of zero; and the rest fell in between. An index was then multiplied according to how that factor was weighed, with all factor weights adding up to 100%.

But that lighter traffic volume has not resulted in fewer traffic fatalities. During that same three-year span, reported traffic fatalities increased by about 19% – from 36,096 in 2019 to 42,915 in 2021, according to the TRIP study.Honolulu (No. 48) also stands out when it comes to safe driving: It was rated No. 50 in people involved in fatal crashes per capita, and it was ranked No. 49 in fatal accidents.

Rounding out the top five cities for overall risk are: Albuquerque, N.M. (No. 2); Detroit (No. 3); Louisville, Ken. (No. 4); and Tuscon, Ariz. (No.5). Two other Arizona cities also are in the top 10: Phoenix (No. 6) and Mesa (No. 8).

The degree of risk a driver faces is determined by a number of factors, including where they live, how many miles they drive, and the type of car they own. Where someone lives also can influence how much they pay for auto insurance. For example, the average annual car insurance rate is less than $900 in Lebanon, New Hampshire, while the average annual rate is more than $3,300 in Miami. Rounding out the top five cities for motor vehicle theft are Denver (No. 2); Albuquerque, New Mexico (No. 3); Portland, Oregon (No. 4); and Oakland, California (No. 5). Motor vehicle thefts are least likely in Tampa, Florida (No. 46); Raleigh, North Carolina (No. 47); El Paso, Texas (No. 48); New York City (No. 49); and Boston (No. 50).

In addition, it examined the average fatality rate per miles traveled in each state from 2019 to 2021; the number of DUI arrests per capita in each state from 2017 to 2019; and the rate of auto thefts from 2019 through 2021.Despite their size, larger U.S. cities such as San Francisco (No. 42), Seattle (No. 43), Chicago (No. 45), and New York (No. 49) are near the bottom of the list of riskiest cities for drivers. Boston (No. 50) is considered the least risky overall for drivers. Massachusetts’ biggest city also ranked last in motor thefts per 100,000 people and last in DUI arrests per capita.

When applying for car insurance, applicants disclose their state of residence and any past accidents or violations on their driving record, including at-fault accidents. Analysts compared the number of drivers in each state with an at-fault accident on record to the total driving population to determine which states had the highest proportion of at-fault accidents in 2022.Of course, while serious accidents are up across the U.S., some areas of the country are more hazardous than others.
